Pending high mileage big ticket expenses?

Hi All,

 

How many high mileage Superbs are there knocking about on this forum? I've seen a fair few used as Taxis so presume there must be many 200k and a few at or over 300?

 

I finished paying mine back this year and have taken the decision to run it until it makes sound financial sense to swap to a newer second hand car. By the end of this month it'll be on new ish (fitted at 170k) discs and pads, new shocks/springs/mounts, and later this year a new set of tyres which should see me to within 10k of the second belt and water pump service which I expect I'll need late next year.

 

So from your experiences what are the big ticket items that tend to go first and what are the ball park for fixing these?

 

I'm expecting to hear about clutch (starter and master cylinder at the same time?), and injectors. Perhaps some of the suspension bushings and joints?

 

So far during my ownership I've had issues with the turbo actuator, cruise control stalk, and xenon. The latter by the way is expensive! I'm not convinced they're worth the £150/bulb cost! I'm generally keeping an eye on the MPG watchin out for any sudden drops but thankfully it's been consistant from 102k to now which is a little over 190k miles.

I'm watching this thread with interest. I'm on 75,000 miles covering 30,000 / year.

 

I'll be running my Superb until it no longer makes financial sense to keep it on the road.

 

Touch wood no faults as yet, long may it continue!

 

To the list of potential culprits listed above I'd add the turbo, EGR, DPF and DMF as potential money pits.

Mines on 126,000 miles, I've had mine nearly 2 years and it had done 110,000 miles.

Great car.

Usual things like all discs and brakes changed on all corners.

Rear shocks and bump stops changed, surprised how bad bump stops were.

Rear brake dust shields both corroded away last year, I just cut them off as don't think it's an MOT check but will know in a couple of weeks.

I changed turbo actuator earlier on this year, it's a fiddly job.

I had an error come up with the o2 sensor, managed to clear it by taking it out of dpf and giving it a clean.

Due to my low miles and since the above I've been adding cetane and or redex to lower the temperature to hopefully improve the regen process but up to now haven't had a direct dpf warning.

I'll have a dig through my reciepts later today and list what things have cost (main dealer serviced) so far. I've had discs and pads done on all corners about 20k ago. I'm currently collecting the parts for the shocks and springs work. Not got bumpstops yet, but will make sure they're in hand before the work starts.  Considering doing it myself but not 100% sure yet.

 

I also had the 02 sensor fail. Mine was about 150k. It was the one (never looked to see if there is two...) ontop of the DPF so did it myself. Part cost a little over 100 from Eurocarparts and it's not peeped since. Bluetooth OBD2 dongle & Torque on android has been great at reading the fault codes so far.

 

I was doing about 30k a year but changed jobs about 18 months ago and it's dropped to about 25k ish. Ideally I'd like it to last 4 more years so the next second hand car is a 3 year old next generation Superb.

 

Ever looked in the Plenum to see how clogged up it is? I know my old Mondeo was very bad at around 180k. It's supposed to be checked in the service but I wouldn't be surprised if it has been missed!

Im sure the 1.6td Superbs have to work harder per mile than a 2.0ltr so problems SHOULD appear more often, though it seems the 1.6td doesnt have a DMF, so thats a grand ive saved already!

 

Often it's good for a diesel engine to have to work a bit harder.

Are you sure about the 1.6 having no DMF?

 

If so it's certainly a bonus.

I thought the clutch feels slightly heavier than other new cars, but not uncomfortably so. I do little stop start or town driving so not a problem.

 

Touch wood I have never yet had to change a clutch in over a million miles driving.

Had 3 Fords, replaced 2 clutches but only cos the DMF was ******ed

Someone saw you coming with £150 per bulb for the Xenon lights. You can pick up a pair of 4300k Xenarc bulbs on the bay for about £80 (genuine). Very easy to replace as well.

I don't think there is a defined big bill moment with these cars. My old Octavia was an absolute money pit between 70 and 90k miles.

That was a Skoda dealership. Same price from Warrington (near home) and Bolton (near work). I didn't change them this time as online research suggested it was a 50/50 chance of it being the bulb or the driver. As I would only pay for the broken bit from skoda if they ordered the wrong part I went with them for the first two bulb changes. However, as it's been the buld twice on the trot I'll just order them myself next time and worry about the driver pack if the bulb doesn't fix it!

Ok, as promised here is what I've spent from 102,000 to about 191,000 miles. Only faults were really the Turbo actuator and cruise control switches. Xenon lights weren't cheap. I'll be doing them myself from now on. Didn't those times as I thought it might have been the power packs or bulbs. Second cam belt and water pump replacement coming service after next.

 

Also on the second set of Continental Sport Contact 5's down to about 3-4.5mm of tread.

 

Service 1: £800 112,451 03/08/12

Water pump, cambelt kit, aircon service & major service.

 

Service 2: £298.50 122,389 19/12/12

Turbo actuator fault and cruise control fault. Turbo actuator replaced, cruise control coloumn switch ordered.

 

Service 3: £166.30 123,019 31/12/12

Cruise control switch replaced.

 

Service 4: £323.46 130,694 19/04/13

7th Variable. Oil and pollen filters.

 

Service 5: £181.22 140,685 09/08/13

Xenon headlight.

 

Service 6: £312.00 151,286 12/12/13

8th Variable. Full service, all filters.

 

Service 7: £187.36 162,995 30/05/14

Xenon headlight.

 

Service 9: £323.41 171,029 18/09/14

9th Variable. Minor service. Oil & filter.

Discs and pads all corners.

 

Service 10: £208.00 190,275 10/07/15

10th Variable. Minor service. Oil & filter.

Exactly what I was thinking, all the others are a little on the steep side but you got your monies worth during service number 9.

 

Front and rear discs and pads are currently at £430, plus a minor service at £139 equals £569. Your £323 is a steal!

Glad I did my own Disks and Pads all round.

 

 

Not difficult work if you have ever changed pads (disks are simple) Cost around £100 for parts in Lincoln and me and a friend changed all four corners in about and hour.

Had an extra 30 mins swapping the disks and pads at the local motor factors for the front when I discovered they were the bigger disks!

 

Wish I could earn £330/2 = £165 per person per hour even with dealers overheads to take off first! I should be a mechanic.

Skoda Superb 2009 128,000 miles.

 

Having discovered the Dealer had failed to warn me about Cambelt change due (he says 120,000miles or 4 years, service book says 160,000km = 99,000 miles.

Ouch that could have hurt if it had failed.

Also found DSG gearbox has not been filter and oil changed since 50,000 miles!!! (should be every 60,000km = 37,200) again that could get expensive.

 

So its Cambelt Change, Gearbox oil and filter change and 7th Variable service.....

Cost £700 inc VAT after dealer knocked around £100 off for the debacle of failing miserably to warn me of due service items!

 

Also rang me for Aircon Service £40 (works perfectly so not going there) and rear bump stops £120 (£12 for the parts on the Bay) so again not going there for now, may well change them myself.

 

To Be Fair sent me a nice link to a video of the inspection of my car including state of suspension and bump stops.

@207,000 £413 MOT Work

 

Dust covers on drop links both sides split.

Bush on front control arm failed. I requested that both sides be done. VAG supply the control arm with bushes rather than bushes separately.

 

I'll get tracking checked soon, hopefully this weekend.

Thanks for the updates! Good to see you cracked 200,000 miles with little pain.

 

I'm on 95,000 miles and covering 29,000 miles a year.

 

Hoping this car has another 5 years in it!

To be fair I probably tweaked the drop link dust covers when I did the struts, but sure I checked. Either way with the mileage I expect bushes and gators are getting towards the end of their life.

 

I'm hoping for another few years yet. It's going to get it's second cambelt and water pump service in the next 20k miles.

 

I'm holding back buying another newer used car until there is a step change in performance, practicality, or running costs. Borrowed my wife's petrol one point something stop-start Yaris on Monday and Tuesday. That convinced me that the stop start really isn't worth buying a car for for me; 43 seconds on an hour and ten one way commute! Its MPG display (I know mpg displays are optimistic at the best of times) was saying 53 when the Superb's usually displays 58 on the same commute. I do drive for economy on commutes though.

 

My Mileage has dropped down to 25k per year now. If the smart motorway upgrade on the M60 does its trick then that could drop again to closer to 20k. Currently adding 10 miles a day to my commute to avoid the M60 road works, get to work quicker and rarely suffer significant complete stop-start traffic.

200,000 past!

 

2009 2.0 TDI CR Executive Hatch

 

97,507 since I got it in April 2012.

8547 Litres of diesel.

Average MPG of 49.0.

 

In comparison, a Boeing 747 fuel tank capacity is 183,380 litres!  :nerd:

Full service, brake fluid, and headlight alignment. Service included all filters.

LHS led indicator has failed. I've ordered the pair and will attempt repair myself. Getting the mirror off seems to be the tricky bit and from the posts it looks like it will be well worth making sure it is well stuck to the backing plastic frame.

Engine service fault has flashed up a couple of times on tue maxidot but can't see anything on obd. They saw an engine fault code in the history but wanted £45 to tell me more! Must have had vag-com plugged in to tell me that anyway!

Just before starting and I have had what feels like a stutter or missfire under slight acceleration. Normal situation is very slight acceleration to pass a truck after following it in free flowing light traffic on very light throttle for a while. My bets are on it possibly being the EGR playing up again. I'm currently leaving it until I can check with the OBD while fault is up. Not had it occur for over a month.

Crazy figures on the 747. I think around 250k is the distance from centre of earth to centre of the moon. The car won't have burnt a tank full of jet fuel by that point!

Granted it isn't using fuel to hold itself up though, and probably averaging around 50 rather than 500!
