Yeti 1.4 TSi Misfire

Recommended Posts

My father in law has an old shape Yeti with the 1.4TSi engine.

I've noticed that when started up from cold it has a bit of a misfire on tickover.  Also, it sounds quite gruff on tickover, is this normal for the 1.4TSi engine (it sounds almost as bad as my 1.9 diesel!).

Any clues anybody?  What are the known faults with this engine in the Yeti?

What age and mileage of 1.4TSI?

Does it need a New Air Filter, or Fuel Filter, and is it a case of Spark Plugs getting a bit sooted up from short journeys and cold runs,

and not used much?

Do the Spark Plugs need checked.?

Be aware that when the car has been sitting, you open the drivers door and the Fuel Pump Primes.

When the car has been running, this is not necessary.

It should start and go to about 1.100rpm, then drop to about 800rpm

Maybe have the Error Codes Checked, but Mis-fires may not show, not enough on a Cycle.

But a Software Update might be in Order,

Spark Plugs Checked, and a Spark Plug going off can shorten the life of an Ignition Coil.

Maybe worth changing where he buys his petrol.

Maybe put in a few tanks of Tesco Momentum 99 and give it a good Octane Fuel and see how it behaves.

Could it be the timing chain?

The gruff engine note sounds just like the Golf in this You Tube video - so I guess it's normal?

This thread on a Scirroco forum sheds more light on the problem.  It seems the misfire/backfire on cold startup is normal.

Are there any particular spark plugs anyone recommends for the 1.4TSI (122 BHP) engine and what should they be gapped at?

It's a 2010 model yeti with the 122ps (turbo only) engine, therefore I believe this is the CAXA engine.  Full main dealer service history and I believe it's on about 45k miles

Service Schedule / Guideline time then for Spark Plug Replacement,

and ask if there is a Software Update available for it.

EDIT. PS

FMDSH (minor, major, minor, major) might mean, Original Air Filter & Fuel Filter still in after 5 years.
