DPF Forced Regeneration Issues

Recommended Posts

I don't understand why my VCDS couldn't get the car out of "Limp Home" mode when VCDS and the ECM accepted the Adaptation and Regeneration codes.

Now that it's been done by the dealer I'll conect my VCDS over the weekend to see what the data looks like now.

Thanks again to everybody for your feedback and interest.

Hi Koxy

It would be very nice if You can sum up, what we can see in vcds about dpf .

Can you read out how much regen failed or passed , or something similar?

Previously i asked this but nowone helped ;)

The reason , i am thinking to buy a cable, and i think this can be one good reason... But depends on your feedback.

Thx!

Hi Juhagpl

Below are the Measuring Blocks that were present in VCDS (Engine Control Module) relating to DPF for my car (I think you are asking about Group 105):-

Group Descrip Window 1 Window 2 Window 3 Window 4 97 Diesel Particle Filter Particle Filter Offset Different Pressure Pressure blank blank 99 Diesel Particle Filter Engine Speed (G28) Temperature prior Turbo Charger Temperature prior Particle Filter Temperature after Particle Filter 100 Diesel Particle Filter Temperature prior recatalytic Converte Temperature prior Particle Filter Particle Filter Different. Pressure Particle Filter Offset Different. Pressure 101 Diesel Particle Filter Engine Speed (G28) Emerg.Regenerat. Current Duration Emerg. Regenerat. Time since start Successful Regenerations 105 Diesel Particle Filter Bin. Bits Requested Regenrations Temperature (no units) 106 Diesel Particle Filter blank Fuel Consumption since Regeneration Driven Distance since Regeneration Time elapsed since Regeneration 108 Diesel Particle Filter Particle Filter Ash Volume Particle Filter Carbon Mass (Spec) Particle Filter Carbon Mass (act) blank

However, for me Group 099.3 and 099.4 in VCDS is "Blank" (Temperature Prior and After Filter).  I'm not sure if this is normal?

My thinking was that the car was not reading these temperatures and was the reason for not being able to do Regeneration.

I knew that both sensors were working because both were displaying 215 ohms at ambient temperature and the resistance increased as the temperature increased.

The Regeneration system uses Temperature After Filter to determine how much additional fuel is required during the Regeneration process to heat up DPF.

I believe the Ross-Tech Cable is worth having even if just to monitor in more detail what is happening with your car (way better than just having a Scan Tool).

Anyway, I hope this information helps.  :D

Sorry i pasted the following as a table from Excel but looks like didn't post that way  :dull:

"Group Descrip Window 1 Window 2 Window 3 Window 4 97 Diesel Particle Filter Particle Filter Offset Different Pressure Pressure blank blank 99 Diesel Particle Filter Engine Speed (G28) Temperature prior Turbo Charger Temperature prior Particle Filter Temperature after Particle Filter 100 Diesel Particle Filter Temperature prior recatalytic Converte Temperature prior Particle Filter Particle Filter Different. Pressure Particle Filter Offset Different. Pressure 101 Diesel Particle Filter Engine Speed (G28) Emerg.Regenerat. Current Duration Emerg. Regenerat. Time since start Successful Regenerations 105 Diesel Particle Filter Bin. Bits Requested Regenrations Temperature (no units) 106 Diesel Particle Filter blank Fuel Consumption since Regeneration Driven Distance since Regeneration Time elapsed since Regeneration 108 Diesel Particle Filter Particle Filter Ash Volume Particle Filter Carbon Mass (Spec) Particle Filter Carbon Mass (act) blank"

The table should read:

097 DPF W1:Filter Offset Different Pressure; W2: Pressure; W3: Blank; W4 Blank

099 DPF W1: Engine Speed (G28); W2 Temp. prior Turbo; W3: Temp prior DPF; W4: Temp after DPF

100 DPF W1: Temp. prior recatalytic converter; W2: Temp prior DPF; W3: DPF Different Pressure; W4: DPF Offset Different Pressure.

101 DPF W1: Engine Speed (G28); W2: Emerg. Regeneration current duration; W3: Emerg. Regeneration time since start; W4: Successful Regernerations.

105 DPF W1: Bin.Bits; W2: Requested Regenerations; W3: Temperature; W4: "Blank"

106 DPF W1: "Blank"; W2: Fuel Consumption since Regeneration; W3: Driven Distance since Regeneration; W4: Time elapsed since regeneration

108 DPF W1: DPF Ash volume; W2: DPF Carbon Mass (Spec); W3: DPF Carbon Mass (act); W4: "Blank"

Sorry if the above isn't clear, but this the best I could do to copy the information from excel spreadsheet.

Many many thanks! ;)

Regarding line 106.: did you realized how often this regen is performed?

Not a problem. [emoji2]

In regards to your question I don't really know. I never knew about DPF's, Regeneration, VCDS etc until errors codes/lights appeared and I started Googling to investigate the errors.

I never new that Regeneration processes occurred and never noticed anything unusual while driving.

  • 8 months later...

Take it for the spin. Find some decent alpine like roads and if in doubt flat out.

My DPF was clogged, DPF regenerated itself 4.5hours (my usual 500km trips). I never had DPF light on, perhaps someone has changed something or just stupid electronic.

On Maxidot, I have seen DPF 0% but EGT was 800deg C, still dumping excessive fuel for regen cycle.

It took me about a half year of race style driving in mountains with usual EGT 500-850deg C. According to Bob Bosch, DPF needs 650deg C for burning out deposits.

Now, all ok. Regen cycle starts at about 50%. EGT 800deg C and 5 minutes later. DPF clean as whistle.

I drive short trips to work if I'm lazy and that's the best solution how to kill turbo and DPF. But I often take my car for some spirited, full load/WOT fun in mountains.

As my friend once said "Don't worry, with your driving style. Your car/engine/dpf have no time to build up any deposits."

Of course it comes with Hajes Racing service procedures, otherwise you destroy your car in no time.

I'm guessing since September last year he's either ditched the DPF or the car :D

I never had an issue with the car again after fixing it.
