rattle at idle

not to savvy on problems with cars but I know when my car does not sound right after driving over 100.000 miles in it,

started to hear a rattle but the car was still driveable as in 'no engine management lights' coming on.

Then on startup one morning after about a week of this it really rattled and engine management light came on with the orange coil light.  Stopped driving it immediately.

had one of the fuel injectors replaced but the rattle is still there.

this sound is a underlying noise like a tinny rattle.

this noise is more at idle, when you rev engine it seems to go away, then when it is at idle again it comes back, intermittantly at times but definately more at idle

something else as well it really smells of exhaust fumes from the exhaust pipe when driving and in idle too

appreciate any help or if anyone had same problem

I am no expert and assume it's a diesel car?

The only thing I can think of is a snapped/broken thing around manifold issue - possibly near the point of fixation to the engine. A change in exhaust gas pressure will cause all kinds of electrickery to come alive plus the noise could be a broken bit of metal tapping against itself. At idle or low speed the fumes will enter the cabin and the noise exaggerated but whilst at speed the air carries the fumes (and the noise) away.

Just a thought. I had this on a car once thinking the worst (cam or head issue...) but it was a broken exhaust manifold that had simply rusted away underneath. Not an expensive fix.

Hopefully it might be as simple as that......

thanks for reply but that is not the problem.

skoda superb saloon 2 litre common rail, running on three cylinders and injector one reading is stuck at 2.99.  No fault codes and injector and wiring have been replaced.

Dave thanks for your reply I have sent this to my mechanic as they are at a loss as to what is wrong.

new injector, cleaned EGR. sent off computer chip and no fault with that either.

what you are saying makes sense to me because the smell in the car and the fumes coming out are terrible

thank you very much for at least trying to answer this for me

diesel engines are a special bit of kit, not for every garage, they may be ok with a petrol engine or even most of a diesel, but the special innards of a diesel engine need a specialist, the injector coding - ive known garages put the OLD injector code on a new injector or enter a wrong code, even the pipes and washers can affect them
