Water ingress problem and electrics

Hi,

For at least 18 months now I've had trouble with water entering all footwells.

Recently, over the last few months I've been having problems with the electrics.  The central locking only opens random doors, and one of them never opens.  None of the windows open.  None of the internal lights come on.  The boot doesn't open apart from with the key.

Yesterday I changed the battery in the car and noticed a huge pool of water below it's position.  This led me to do a search online and it seems I have the problem below:

Also, when I last had the car in for a service it was discovered that the control box and the wiring was water logged.

My question is, once all the wet is sorted will the control box need to be replaced or will it suffice if I re-do all of the connections?

Many thanks,

Ryan

Hi Ryan and welcome.

I'm afraid that is an impossible question to answer because at present, you have no idea what damage, if any, the water has caused to the Convienience Unit. Then, there is the wiring to be inspected, to see if the nodes (joints) have been damaged from the water through corrosion.

I had this issue last year and spent a large sum with a main dealer to get the ingress fixed, carpets out, under-felt replaced (it can be dried-out as you'll see from the various fixes) Convienience Unit dried out and then the wiring all repaired. The water had even crept into the loom of the parking sensors which took an age to fix. I was happy to do this, as I have no intention of selling the car as it's pretty much worthless at present but I love it's looks and driving it.

So, all I can suggest is, if you haven't done so already Ryan, get that pollen filter housing gasket replaced ASAP to stop further water getting in and then work your way through the guides. Like us, you might be lucky and the convenience unit is undamaged, and it's "just" the wiring.

Good luck and keep us informed of progress - I've got my fingers crossed for you...

Cheers... Rob

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your reply.

I'll start with the pollen filter unit and try to release the water from under the battery.  For the collection of water under the seats, I might drill a couple of holes either carefully through the carpet with a depth gauge or slice a small section of carpet to see what's going on.  I know this sounds a bit heavy handed but after all the problems I've had with this car, as much as I love it, I've felt close to wanting to push it off a cliff!

Cheers,

Ryan

Empty the plenum chamber of water by clearing the muck from the drain holes first. Then do the repair on the seal.

I would lift the carpet to see what's going on first as a little water goes a long way, then decide if you need to drill through the metal to empty the water.

There are a lot of cables under there and the last thing you want is to make matters worse by drilling through the carpet and then those!

If it has got that wet (water in the convenience unit tub), for that long - you will have probably ongoing issues as all the terminals will be corroding in the multiplugs, and the various earth points / nodes in the wiring loom.  You'll want to get acquainted with doing the work yourself if possible as it will be very expensive to chase it all down at a dealership.

Follow the info in the sticky topic.  It is all covered in there I think.

Rob and Jimbof,

Thanks for the replies.

So far I've just drilled a couple of holes in the back footwells.  This has offered some relief to the amount of water, but next task will be the area below the battery and the pollen filter.

Thanks,

Ryan

  • 1 month later...

Hello everyone,

Just a quick update on this.  Over the weekend I stripped back all of the connections I could see on the cables down the side of the foot well and leading to the comfort control module.  Most of them were indeed corroded to varying degrees.

I also drilled a hole in the front (since drilling the hole in the back the water hasn't built up but the carpets were still pretty damp).  The comfort control module seemed to be fine with no sign of damage from the water, but when I finished and turned the ignition no improvement to the problems.  so now I think the next step is to order a new comfort control unit.

While I was at it I took off the door panel to inspect the electric window as there was a grating noise and the window wouldn't quite go up.  I found the culprit frayed cable, and tidied it up a bit and just about managed to get the window up.  Now I'm unable to open the front passenger side door at all, and I'm unsure if this is because I've disturbed something or if this is also because of the comfort control module.

Any further thoughts would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Ryan

When I order the new part, do I just need to match the part number '1CO 959 799 B' or also the rest of the numbers - Zm max 5DK 008 214-00 III 25005 H01/S004 ?

Thank you,

Ryan

Hi Ryan,

1CO 959 799 B is the part number. As far as I know that unit was used on a range of VAG vehicles. Just be careful buying preowned, because the part number maybe the same but the coding can be wildly different, so I think it'll have to be from a late model PD140 Superb. If you're buying new, it's darned expensive.

Hi Rob,

How expensive is expensive?

Do you think it's likely to be the solution? The cables connecting to the unit seemed to be ok although I didn't take the individual pins out. Perhaps I should try tbis first? What's the best way to remove these? I tried to pull them out but didn't want to use too much force and break them.

Thanks,

Ryan

Hi Ryan,

I'd try the cheap route first and take out the plugs from the unit and dry/clean them. I think they'll have a clip you need to depress to release the plug from the unit? Re the cost, I could be wrong but I seem to remember the dealer saying its IRO £250 + VAT.

Ryan, I've checked and rechecked this thread, and you haven't said if you've cleaned-out the drains in the plenum chamber and replaced the pollen filter gasket as yet? I ask as all this work you're undertaking is utterly pointless if water is still entering the car!

Cheers... Rob

I've just released the grommet from under my battery jesus it was like letting the plug out of the bath

Well done. Now leave it out, but I'd smear some under seal around the general area and edge of the hole. Next get that pollen filter seal sorted!

There is another plug under the brake servo with a brake pipe going through it.

If it has been like that for long then your brake servo has also been taking a bath, they corrode which can lead to failed brakes and brown pants.

Might be worth trying to see what the servo looks like.

I've done the pollen filter seal the original was broken in 3 pieces. Used a generous amount of silicon sealant around the rim. I have managed to snap the lower windscreen trim as well trying to get to the rear nut on the filter housing not impressed. Also after reconnecting my battery I now have my doors locks unlocking as should(once my door two presses all doors) must of reset it ? Next I have to take passenger seat out as done the finger in vent test and my floor in wet
