Thinking of buying 2.0PDI Superb........

OK so 99% will say to me DONT DO IT, but hear me out on this one.......

I've enquired about a 56 plate 2.0TDI 140 Superb Elegance 150k from new, DPF removed and remapped.

Anyhow, knowing about the dreaded oil pump drives and balance shafts I enquired about this (the car has been owned by a VAG specialist in Essex).

The reply I got was that this is the early 2.0PD TDI and has the 'transverse' engine hence no issues with oil pump drive.

Is this correct as these lumps were only fitted to Golf 5's and Octavia 2's etc?

My thoughts were that 1) it has had an engine swap from a Golf Mk5 or similar or 2) he is telling me porkies.......

If 1) above is true would that be of any detriment to the car (other than obviously no oil pump drive will fail)

Many thanks

Dan

Why would you knowingly do this to yourself?

My thoughts too

Anyway, I thought there were too many things needed changing to make it viable to mount an originally transverse engine longitudinally?  Or is he saying it's a Mk1 with a transverse engine mounted .....errrr.....transversely under the bonnet?

OK what spec is a Edition 100? Comparable to Elegance spec??? Mileage? Colour? Price

Thanks

Dan

The Edition 100 started off as an Elegance which then had a few more gizmo’s thrown at it  :D

They only come in black, were released in 2005 and the majority (of the 100 that were available in the UK) were a 55 plate.

Mileages is currently 95K but it is in daily use so will rise.

Here is my project thread

Looking for £3,500

I also have a set of mint alloys and winter tyres that a deal could be done on.

As far as I am aware NONE of the engines fitted to a SKoda Superb I were transverse and the 2.0 PD MKI DID have the troublesome balancer module/oil pump drive issue.

Different on the MK II (after 2008)

Just doesn't know what he is talking about (benefit of the doubt), or trying to baffle you with "science".

Get him to take a photo with the hood popped.  Bet the cambelt cover is at the front...

I would hope he does know what he is talking about - his business is an independent VAG specialist!!

Maybe he was trying to baffle me with science - he said the car is totally mechanically sound as had new Dmf and clutch and been owned and meticulously maintained by them.

Apart from the engine doubts, the car looks great - nice colour and great spec (full leather, sat nav, 6 speed etc) - shame that VAG had to spoil it with poor quality components which they will take no responsibility for when it goes bang.....

Gizmo68 - yours look great and low mileage too and very well kept.

Something to consider but at the moment would be at bit over my budget for one... :(

My interest in a Superb has stemmed from being loaned one (52 plate 130PD Elegance) whilst my Octavia 1 110TDi Estate was having a new head gasket, I liked it so much I started to look for one but at present I have now got a 100% mechanically sound car now the Octavia is sorted....

Unless you've the opportunity to get a good one cheap then, probably best to keep your money in your pocket! :)  Devil you know and all that.

Make sure you read up on the water ingress issues if you are set on a Mk1 Superb (sticky at the top).

It's possible that it's had a replacement engine out of Golf, Octavia etc. It's apparently not unheard of for 2.0PD Audi A4s, A6s etc that have suffered a catastrophic oil pump drive failure to be fitted with a replacement 2.0PD non-balance shaft engine out of a crashed A3 or Golf to get them going again. No reason why you couldn't do the same to a mk1 Superb as far as I know.

You would need to check the engine number to make sure it really is a non-balance shaft variant like a BKD for example, rather than the failure prone BSS.

Like mine, I suppose it is possible the oil pump has previously failed and been replaced with a revised unit with a solid shaft. In my case, I'm thankful that I know that to be a fact, as I was shown it by the dealer before it was fitted. If so, that will solve the problem in the future. Having said all that, Sanis Motors website is deeply unimpressive as, it would appear, is their knowledge of the type of engine fitted to the car so I'd be cautious for that reason alone.

Thanks numskull and nick74

I have sent a couple of messages and tried to call the guy to find out more info (I.e. engine code) no response as yet....

I've seen their website yes quite underwhelming so I think I've made the decision to leave well alone....perhaps he didn't like me asking specific questions....

  • 2 months later...

Hi reading the posts I have to confess I bought the car in question Saturday and have had it checked out and yes your right the timing belt is at the front and my mechanic can not find fault with the car there's shed loads of receipts with the car clutch/dual mass wheel refurb services including a fully stamped up to date book the car is quick as well as economical according to the computer the only thing I'm changing is the tyres as they are ok but I'm fussy and am putting 4 new tyres on it as it's something I do with all my cars I buy unless they are like new oh and also I've put my own double din stereo Bluetooth sat Nav system in it

Well I hope he sorted the 'rattle' on idle (which he told me was bits of the broken up DPF in the back box) which sounded awful.

After seeing the car I best describe it as a 'trade' car. The interior was grubby and had a cut in the passenger front seat. The six sense kicked in and said 'no' and I walked away.

I know it wasn't a lot of money but these cars don't keep their value unfortunately especially with the troublesome 2.0PD BSS engine and oil pump drive.

I hope the car turns out OK for you and you have no expensive issues.

Ahhhhhh! So you've posted in the MKII section and this one!! Now that I see you've bought a MKI PD140, I can answer your question more fully. Anti-Hijack is not standard on the MKI and cannot be enabled with Maxdot. It has to be enabled via VCDS or by a dealer. Our MKI has single push, all doors opening with the keyfob, so the issue you have may be related to water ingress in the convenience unit or failed locking solenoids. Have you checked for damp under the passenger carpet? Do they all lock from the lock/open button on the drivers door rest? The more info you give the more we can try to help... and please use punctuation; it's really tough for an old fart like me to follow what you're saying without it!

Mine was set to single push unlocking only one door, needing double push to unlock all.  It is a VCDS / dealer setting; but of course you could be looking at another failure elsewhere too.

Sounds like you've bought yourself a bit of bother then.  If it is wet you at least need to stop the water getting in, then try and dry it out, and then sort out any electrical gremlins you'll get as a result of the water damage to the connectors.  Hundreds of pounds to fix it at a dealer, but if you are handy then it is only really time if your CCM hasn't got too wet and fried.

Good luck with the repairs if you are going to do it yourself.  There is a big sticky thread with all the info you need in it.
