Bluetooth pairing... what am I missing?

I've tried to pair two phones to my 2010 Octavia Scout - and I'm having little success, suggesting they're not compatible. Well they both do Bluetooth!

 

What should my phones have that they obviously don't? I presume its not a set list of phones but some technology?

 

Phones are an old HTC Desire Z and a Samsung Utopia. I am NOT splurging on a  Samsung Galaxy Note 4 like the previous owner had paired to this car!!

Bluetooth switched on and visible on the phone. Go to pair it up and should be seen.

Bluetooth is switched on, they are making themselves visible, the car is seeing them - but they are not "compatible".

It sounds like the car is attempting to pair them in premium mode which is basically rSAP (remote sim access protocol). Your phone needs to be compatible with this system.

 

Depending on which module you have in the car it may be limited to this.

 

The module should be under the drivers seat if it's an original fit. Take the cover off and get the part number off it.

Phil was correct, it is an rsap only module. You must have maxi dot for the previois owner to have paired that module to the galaxy note in which case you can replace the module for less than £100 on ebay to 3c8 035 730 a or higher. D or e is better. These work with all phones in hfp mode and still do rsap if you ever get an rsap enabled phone....

Haha. Yeah all these technical terms.

 

rsap = Remote Sim Access Protocol- basically takes over the sim card in the phone and uses it's own mobile antenna etc not the one in the phone. Limited number of phones support this. Normally only the higher end Samsungs (like the S3, S4, S5 and S6 or Note 3, 4, 4 etc).

 

hfp = Hands Free Protocol- this is the universal Bluetooth protocol. It's what most Bluetooth headsets etc use.

I recently changed by rsap only module for one that does HFP and music streaming. If you want to save some cash you can get one like mine if you're not bothered about the rsap stuff. The one I got was £49.99 7P6 035 730 M.

 

If you search for VW Bluetooth module on ebay you will be inundated with results.

Yup. I didn't really want to spend much more than that on one and so I held off and kept searching. I think they were a breakers and said it had been pulled from a VW van.

 

Got £20 for my old one too.

 

Other half was happy too as they're now able to use their iPhone 6 in the car so brownie points for me too.

If it's rSAP only model, then It will pair only on rSAP phones.

 

I swapped mine to the newer model that supports both rSAP and HFP, then you get a question do you want to allow full SIM access on the phone which is rSAP mode, if you cancel that, you are connected then to HFP mode, but your bluetooth module needs to support both.

I've currently got a 5N0 035 730 B in my 2010 Octavia vRS. Not compatible with my iPhone 6.

 

Have you any idea what model number I need to be looking for so I can get my phone and music paired up?

 

And is it a simple plug and play job? ie just swap one unit for another compatible one?

Ideally the one Phil found above at that price. Pop the part number into eBay and don't pay more than £70. With an iPhone no point in buying the premium module as the premium functions are not supported by Apple.

Plug n play although you will leave the purple gsm aerial unconnected.
