Hi guys,

I've heard really good things about this site so I thought I'd pop on and ask a question. Here goes....

I have just bought an 09 Octavia vrs, it's an awesome car to drive and litteraly the best car I have owned, I've only ever been able to afford older cars from private sales and it's still a lot of money for me to put out. I'm generally happy with the feel of the car but I'm having a few wee niggles and one potential big issue.

First the potential.... I had only driven it a couple of times and decided to give it a real blast along a back road near me, I had driven it for about 20 minutes to make sure the engine had warmed up properly then put the foot down in 2nd gear at about 20 mph. Once the revs had reached almost to the red, the coil light flashed up on the dash and the info screen said 'engine workshop' the light went off and so did the message but it happened again the next time i really gunned it. After that, under 'normal' driving conditions it's fine. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what it is? I've got the car booked back into the dealer i bought it from but thought i'd check on here in case they try and pull a fast one. I paid £8500 for it with 59K on the clock so didn't expect anything like this.

number 2 and 3 now.... The touch screen nav/ entertainment becomes very unresponsive and slow after a few minutes of driving and the ipod interface on it rarely works, I thought it was maybe heating up too much, also, when i use the ipod it only plays the sound from the right hand speakers.

Any help or advise would be gratefully accepted

Andy

Without plugging your car in to vcds it's gonna be hard to diagnose, if not sure what that is google or a search on here will answer that

Regarding no 2 and 3 issue is it a genuine columbus nav unit? If not it may be that it's a cheap copy and I've heard that the older ones are a bit poop

Thanks for the reply,

Yeah that's what I had kinda thought. I've been trawling google for the last few days looking for a clue, but it seems no one has had the light on like this yet... I bought from Peter Vardy near me not a Skoda dealer so I hope they have the right kit to deal with it!! Also, I really don't know about whether it's genuine or not, it comes up with the Skoda logo upon start up so I assumed it was genuine.... I'm questioning that now!

Ah thanks, I do hope its just the plugs/ coil packs then, it's going in tomorrow to be looked at, I think the faults all get logged so the diagnostic should be fairly straight forward. and yeah, the head unit is one of the cheap chinese types, I'm going to blag it as the cd player doesn't work now either! Do any of you guys have a link to a good/ genuine head unit that would suit the car? preferably with bluetooth etc and suitable for my existing rear parking sensors?. Not bothered about the sat nav as i have a decent one already with free map updates. Sorry for asking for so much but whenever I'm looking at them I always end up at the cheaper VW copies.

Thanks again for helping out a newbie haha

Many of the cheap sat nav units from China are pre-preogrammed with the Skoda logo, so unfortunately this isn;t a way of checking if it is genuine. Any chance of posting up a piccy?

Is the ipod interface part of the headunit, or a separate uniit mounted in the glovebox? The genuine head units do not have any ipod connectivity without an MDI unit, unlikely to be the case on an 09 plate car.

Where abouts in the country are you based?

Mike

Yeah it's fine, definitely not genuine! i was being naive.... The ipod cable is in the wee compartment on the top of the dash. I'm in Fife, Scotland. I'll get a pic posted up tomorrow though.

It's probably not a problem with your car, more likely to be the copy head unit not integrating with the can bus system of the car.

Not the cheapest units on the market, but the Columbus is the one that is the real McCoy and integrates perfectly with the car. But you will need a separate bluetooth for the phone, and an MDI unit if you want iPod interaction. Search for Skoda Columbus on ebay, usually plenty on there.

Mike

Yeah I looked for them, pretty expensive!! Especially if you want the bluetooth too. i saw one that was DAB and bluetooth that was nearly £2000. WAY out of my budget. I don't suppose you would have any suggestions to decent cheaper alternatives? sorry if i'm asking too much, i'm just worried about getting really crappy stuff that isn't worth it.
