Satnav SD card backup?

Totally Square

Question for all those with an SD card driven sat nav: did you take a backup of the sat nav SD card?

Background: I was surprised to find that the SD card with sat nav data has to be permanently in the the sat nav. Apart from someone extracting it and losing it, its also subject to the temperature extremes inside the car (aka hot summers and cold winters when parked). So the normal thing to do would be to get a same-size card and use a low level tool to make an exact copy, or just copy the files over to ones Mac or PC for "safekeeping" as an insurance.

i think these cards become locked, and cannot be copied - i stand to be corrected though!

Thanks - I can understand them being locked for writing, but a backup of course is just reading (which the sat nav does itself).

But maybe its not an issue and no-one does backups anyway?

The handbook says that the original SD card has to be in the unit so I guess that something stays on the original if you copy it and stops you copying everything to another card and using that.

On another thread someone makes a backup copy onto their PC when installing the updates (latest Amundsen only) so it can be done and so it arrear that the card can be written to as well as read.

The data on the SD card can be copied and updated.
The card used in the sat-nav must be a pukka Skoda Navigation card else it will come up with an error and will not work.
When updating the maps from the Skoda website on an Amundsen II unpack the map data to a folder on the PC then copy that to the card as there is a problem with unpacking it to the SD card as the instructions tell you to do it.

Amundsen II map updates are available Here

Thanks for that tip as I was going to do it soon.

Do you need to delete the old map data from the SD card before transferring the new to it?

Bit of an obvious question really but just thought I'd double check.

Thanks.

Yes it needs to be clean, make a copy of the old data first though, just in case.
