Warm start

Recommended Posts

Hello.,

I have a Fabia II Combi, 1.6 petrol. I have to attemp 3 times until the engine starts.

This only happends when the car is "warm". When the car is cold start normally.

Any clue?

Not a totally unusual fault, on many vehicles both two and four (And probably more)!

It can be a simple thing such as fuel evaporated from the engine (Carbs/injectors) Meaning it takes more work to pump fuel back up from the tank or many vehicles return unused fuel to the tank, again, a few more seconds turnover needed. It might be the cold start system thinking that the vehicle is warm, thus not choking off cold air.. Think of old-world chokes on older vehicles... Injected vehicles still need to do this in principle, if via a different method.  Dirty plugs can make both warm and more likely, cold starts trickier.

A stuck thermostat could do a similar thing. i have known motorcycles, (in particular, Kawasaki's), To really struggle to start with a weak battery, either warm or cold. It seems like a fair charge, I.E. battery won't charge any more, full, but the capacity is worn to such a degree that the battery is effectively weedy despite sounding like it is turning the engine over. A new, fully charged battery later, no problems starting! Worth getting it crank tested as just thinking its charged is not enough unless you know its quite a fresh battery. Leave a week battery a few hours, it might recover enough to start but will fail again sooner or later.

It does sound like either fuelling or ignition issue but that can be extremely simple or a total "Mare"!

the obvious things, such as good plugs, clean air filter, oil change, battery test, etc should help eliminate a few possibilities.

I would think the evaporation problem would most likely affect HOT rather then warm engines but cannot say for certain.

Im thinking its the battery on mine i just serviced it less than 1000 miles ago and spent over £200 changing every single thing except the battery

  • 2 years later...

I Just changed the thermostat, and also change the fuel filter from 4bar to 3 bars.

The same behaviour!!! I wait for long specting the problem got wrost but not happend.

So, I decide to went to the garage,

They checked all sensors, mettered the fuel pump pressure, etc.

Finally they told me that the engine had a compression problem.  They put oil in the explosion chamber (by the spark plug hole) and the car  turned on.

So, the budget for the repair is $700 UDS for change the piston rings.  I don't know really  if thata solve the problem.  Any commentaries?

Probably a fair price... If it started when they added oil, this temporarily raised the compression for a few seconds. Try the same technique yourself at home... See if it starts ok just the time you add the oil and then goes back to tricky start.
