The older Diesel engines will always emit black smoke of some sort under acceleration , even a quick pull away from traffic lights, as willydiog says as long as it's not smoking as you drive along it's fine ...

If you get the engine nice and warm and give it what's called " an Italian tune up" a good hard run in 3rd gear up a hill usually works a treat to clear the system out and use a decent fuel system cleaner and you shouldn't have any problems.

If it does it every time then it's not normal.

Now and then after driving steady some smoke is normal.

But thick black smoke is not normal. Does the engine sound ok? No whoosy noises or whistles?

How often do you give it a good rev.

Many thanks guys, air filter newish and very clean, it isn't thick black smoke more dark grey if that makes sense, with regards to revving only when i go on motorway i give it a blast ( up to 85mph) for about a mile engine makes no funny noises I thought it was the other day then realised the wife was singing :x

Under normal driving no smokey.

Thank you for your time, I appriciate it. Paul.

Sounds normal then really.

Like I say if I just pootle along at 60 or 70mph for a while then floor it I get a bit of smoke. More noticeable at night in the headlights behind.

As long as it's not blue, white or thick black you should be fine :)
