Steering Wheel Buttons

Hi, this is my first post here after I picked up a 2009 Superb this morning.

I spent my lunch break in the car setting up all the toys using the steering wheel buttons and the display on the instrument cluster, but when I just got in it to drive home, none of the buttons seem to work any more.

I can use the scroll wheels to adjust the volume and scroll through options on the display, but if I press any of them (like the phone button, or the right hand scroll wheel to OK/Enter) nothing happens. Yikes!

Please tell me this is something simple that I'm doing wrong... it was working fine earlier.

Thanks

Dave

I once had this whilst my car was struggling to pair with a phone - just said "connecting"(even after turning ignition off and on again) - took ages to time out. It's been OK since and works with the same offending phone!

Try turning your mobile off (if you have bluetooth)

Thanks bigjohn, I just went out to the car and tried it without my phone, but it made no difference.

I paired my phone first thing at lunch time, then played with all the settings with no trouble at all.

It was later on, after work, that I noticed none of the push buttons on the steering wheel work at all suddenly. The scroll wheels do work, so I can adjust the volume of the radio, and scroll through the menus, I just can't select anything.

To clarify does that mean all buttons including pushing the scroll button in

Yeah, the scroll bars work for scrolling, but not pushing them..

Disturbed earth? Evidence of wheel been off recently?

Have you bought your car from a garage - if so you will have some sort of warranty

Does look as though the buttons can fail eventually(need firmer push beforehand)  - but I would be amazed if they suddenly failed on the same day

Hmm... OK. It came from a second hand car dealer, but I noticed a couple of things wrong, so it went to a VW specialist run by a friend of a friend for those items to be corrected, which is why I felt OK about buying it. I might ring them tomorrow.

Weird... Obviously I tried the buttons on my way into work this morning and they were not working.

Just been out now (lunch time) and everything works perfectly.

Annoyingly, I just booked it into our local VW specialist before I got up and went out!

Maybe they only work between the hours of 12 & 2?!

Sounds like its not the actual buttons themselves - they both don't break and fix themselves at the same time.

How many miles has it done? has it gone part time approaching retirement  :notme:  - says he not working tomorrow!

I think it is something to do with the position of the wheel in relation to the connection of the earth as bigjohn suggested. On our MKI, the cruise buttons on the wheel can be completely inoperative, but by turning the wheel all the way to the left and to the right and bingo, all is well again. It's worth giving it a try? This might be off track, but you can't some change settings in the MFD (multi function display) when the car is moving/running. I thought I'd broken something too when I got the car and 'lost' the ability to change stuff while waiting at the traffic lights.

I can't change MFD  "settings" when moving but can when stationary (with stop/start engaged  or engine still running). Can always operate phone, onboard computer &ICE though

Yup, it's not possible to change any settings unless the car is stationary.

Cheers guys, I know you can't change a lot of the settings while you are moving, but this is everything. I can scroll through the MFD OK, but pushing the right scroll wheel does nothing. Same with the phone and back buttons. I had a couple of text messages today, and I could scroll between "Show" and whatever the other option is just fine, but pushing the scroll wheel did nothing. Again - it worked absolutely fine at lunchtime. I took the car out and went and parked up somewhere quiet to read through the manual and have a fiddle with stuff. Everything worked. I could scroll through and select every option I could think of on the instrument cluster.

Got back in the car after work and it worked for about 30 seconds, then nothing.

It's booked in Monday morning. The driver's heated seat doesn't work either, so they are looking at that too.

Sounds like CANBUS gremlins to me. Good luck with resolving this, and be sure to post a follow up, thanks.

Same thing here, it started with Bluetooth acting funny but was going through the menus fine...now it's stuck on pairing Bluetooth as I've reset to factory values...can it be faulty main board ? I had it replaced twice as my right indicator was constantly on...could it be the same module responsible for that ? I have a diagnostic cable cable...would it show anything if that module is malfunctioning ?

Mine is currently being looked at. I'll respond again when I know more.

Typically, the buttons were not working when I got in it this morning, but when I demonstrated it to the tech, they worked just fine.

  • 6 years later...

Did you manage to fix this? I've got a 2011 Octavia the right scroll wheel has stopped selecting things. Can scroll fine and the others work but it won't actually select anything to bring up another menu like the audio or nav. It's rather annoying. Been like this for a few days now
