All four tyres out of round - very strange

Recommended Posts

Hi

Just wondered if anyone has had this?

Been having a vibration at high speeds and feels like the wheels are out of balance.

So called my friend who owns a tyre fitting business and he came out and tools the wheels of. On the balancing machine all the tyres have high spots and are not quite round anymore?

So I asked how could this happen and he implied pretty much the only way is under heavy emergency type braking, but in my case that has not happened and there are no abrasion marks on the tyres what so ever, so 99% sure emergency braking is not the cause. He also did not believe it would be caused by an Impact I.e. a pothole or that it was an issue with the tyres themselves (he did not supply them). They are kumho 18's so not prenium tyres but also not budget tyres.

Seems very odd all 4 tyres are exactly the same. Also the vibrations only started after I had the clutch and dmf replaced last week at the dealers. Of course that could just be coincidence as I cannot work out what could have happened to cause it on all four wheels?

Has anyone had this?

Not that fussed as new superb comes in Feb but it's annoying me and would like to work out why :)

Thanks

Seems very odd. I've had that, but only on one tyre.

It was on the back of my Fabia, I just put it down to the tyre being old, the back tyres on a Fabia seem to last forever!

Maybe do a Google search - it may be a known problem with the tyres you've got?!

Had it sat and tyres gone flat?

Hi

No never been sat around with tyres being flat, dealer only had it a day and cannot see what they could have done. Am guessing nothing as no way they would remove the rear wheels for a new clutch, just a coincidence I guess.

Have done some googling on it but not on the particular brand. Good tip so will check...cheers

Rear wheels wouldn't have come off and probably only one front wheel would have. Sounds like dud tyres then

Thinking you could be right. They have done a total mileage of about 18k and have been rotated at about 10k

Have had loads of balance issues as long as I have had the car tbh. The wheels must have been balanced 4 to 5 times and had tracking done etc at least once.

Maybe they are just bad tyres. Never used this brand before and they came with the car when I picked it up. Dealer agreed to put new tyres on as part of the deal so knew I was not gonna get premium tyres.

Just gotta put up with it till after xmas and as long as I don't go ov 65mph then it's not too bad. Annoyingly it vibrates at exactly 69mph and then gets worse as you go faster (which of course is only 70mph lol)

Guess I will not be recommending kumho tyres and will avoid them in the future

I really rate Kuhmos, odd

My trye fitter friend also rates them

Could just be a duff batch I guess?

Nothing I can really do as they have done loads of miles and doubt a warranty claim is possible. Am sure all manufacturers have similar issues tbh

The Kumhos my car had when I bought it were noisy and got worse as they developed sawtoothing after a few months use. Rotating the tyres quietened things enough to allow me to use them till they were under 2 mm, but the drop in tyre noise when I went to Dunlops last year was amazing. The Kumhos did have excellent wet and dry grip, but the new tyres match or exceed that without the noise.

There's no sign of sawtoothing on the replacement tyres (Summer or winter) and the tracking wasn't adjusted before fitting them, so it looks like it's something that particular tyre does as it wears.

The wheels themselves are ok. The trye fitter checked them over for me.

The wobble/vibration starts at about 68mph and continues to 80mph, after this is settles down a bit. It does feel worse under acceleration and the when you get to the correct speed it still wobbles but just a bit less.

Low speed it is ok tbh

It really feels likes out of balance wheels so got them balanced and found them actually being less than round. Dam strange it is all of them which is why I posted. Goggled it and seems most people have 1 and at worst 2 wheels out of round, but not 4.

Tbh just love to know why and if anyone else had a similar problem. My new superb arrives in Jan/Feb so not gonna change the tyres unless it becomes a safety issue.

When I first got it I had a few problems with it pulling to the left and vibrating. So got the tracking done and the later found one of the rear wheels was bent, so Skoda replaced it for me. Since then it has been ok until I rotated the wheels and that again caused a vibration. A balance later and all good until now.

Clutch failed 2 weeks ago and that it went in for a new clutch and dmf, Skoda were very kind and did a amazing deal on the price, as I was a good customer and buying a new car from them. After this the vibrations returned but do not believe this was the cause tbh.

I am going with a duff batch of tyres theory as can't think another way it could have happened. The are no bulges in the side wall etc which is consistent with I.e. Pot hole damage and no flat spots that would indicate an emergency stop has taken place.

Just gonna have to sit in the slow lane for the next few months lol

Cheers all

OK, I agree with you, a dud batch of tyres. Tell the tyre dealer you want to speak to the Kumho rep.

I had an issue with 2 Good Year tyres on a previous car, which were out of round from day one. The Good Year rep came and looked at them (even visited my house to look at them). Suggested I drive for another few thousand kms. After no improvement I was given another set of tyres and they were perfect. If you are polite and know your rights as a consumer most things can be resolved.

good luck.

Still I think it's balace:) go another place, check all wheels balance, and are they not bented( plus if tyre out off shape you can see it by eye

I'd do this. You mentioned that the tyre fitter came to you - IMO you can't properly balance wheels on a machine in the back of a van.

Mobile guys come out and do mine but then I usually get my repair agent to check the balancing, virtually everytime it is about 5-10g out.

TBH my tyre guy is solid

Every time I go to the dealer or a n other tyre place they never seem to get it correct. Always take them 2 or 3 goes cause they can never be bothered to calibrate the machine, and then I have to do loads of trips back and forth!

I will try another place tonight as it does not cost much to get it done. Anyone recommend a good place in the stevenage/letchworth/hitchin area?

Checked the wheels are still round visually and all good and the high spot is very clear its the trye itself.

Checked the Kumho site and they will not even consider a warranty claim after the tryes are something 2/32 used, guessing that is less and a mil in the real world and the tryes have done well over 15k

As i say luckily I do not have to put up with it forever, just have to get to feb 2016 :)

Thanks for your replies btw
