BLT engine blue smoke

Right guys, before I start forking out £££ on parts whats your opinion.?

The car when left overnight, but often every time I start it I get a massive cloud of grey-white-blue smoke on start up ( really hard to tell but it's pale, not black). Idle is smooth but smell everywhere around the car ( either burning oil or overfuellng due to remap) Then while driving it doesn't smoke a lot, but every time at 1700-1800 usually on a gear change the car stutters and spews out a big cloud of very blue smoke. After that over 2k rpm smooth again and no visible smoke.

Many said turbo seals, but would it not smoke more under higher rpm under load? (it doesn't) No noises from the turbo either, no fault codes.

EGR and ASV cleaned last week. peak torque on remap printout at 1750rpm. Oil level hasn't dropped in 2000 miles.

I thought valve stem seals, but really not sure. The hesitation and judder at 1700rpm is very consistent folllowed by blue cloud of smoke... it feels like the accumulated oil spews out ( like the engine clears its throat and breathes freely again)

Whats your bet?

Valve guard stem seals would cause it on start up to smoke due to oil passing them once sat but wouldn't unless bad cause problems when driving but to behonest th valve guard stem seals are not a common item on the pd engine. My self I'd just monitor this keep eye on oil lvl etc and not worry unless it gets worse.

Sometimes better left things Along before diving in feet first

another thing we noticed...a strong ish engine blow by when you remove the oil filler cap. Smells of burned oil/fuel, I will put a latex glove over it and see how much it blows.

Either way a compression test is needed I think...

(put some Shell V-Power Nitro+ and the car was more responsive, less stutter/smoke)  ...98RON so burns with better efficiency

Not really burns with better nitro+ it's not a petrol where higher fuel rating advances timing..

Nitro+ fuel has less bio diesel percentage plus verious additives that's all. Yes it does burn slightly better but won't make any performance diffrance. It is good fuel smokes less due to additives plus lubricates the fuel system so much more which a diesel car needs

I could deffo see less smoke and smoother (responsive) engine.  Would that help/affect the running if the engine is 'worn'?  Need to check the severity of blow-by,,,what is considered normal on PD130?

the white smoke at startup could just be result of a faulty glow plug.

but it's after sitting overnight.  Even in warm weather when it doesn't really need glow plugs.  It's grey/white-blue

It's the stutter at 1700rpm followed by plume of blue smoke what worries me

I do know the older style pd engines suffered with egr problems and the vw group made an egr restriction gasket to fit onto the pipe so less gases can pass through maybe worth trying this gasket only a couple of pound from vw dealer and a smipleish fit.

It wouldn't cause the smoke but it can cause hesation at about the revs you are saying plus another thing what air filter are u running I'd put a standard one in if not using to rule that out also

I've fitted the gasket 2 weeks ago (when I cleaned the EGR)...made a massive difference, revvs a lot easied, no stutter apart from the 1700rpm when i get the smoke. Standard air filter fitted.

Anyway...it's been booked for a compression test tomorrow

Left the car in the garage last night...and 350quid :((   and a guess of what it might be.

The owner, a good mechanic took if for a drive and said...well the car has been heavily mapped, hasn't it?  Which is true...172bhp/350lbs   and hence the rich smell (he said it's just diesel...and as it has decat there is nothing to 'filter' it)       vagcom shown no errors.  He said he can feel a slight misfire at 1600rpm ish... and that's when i get the stutter and smoke.  he believes it's the injector loom causing this and apparently it's not uncommomn on high mileage PD130/150. And injector seals could drip overnight causing the smoke in the morning.  he said it doesn't smoke enough/consistently for worn valve stem seals and exhaust is dry only sooted up from richer map....apparently it would feel oily if it's burning oil (my oil level hasn't moved at all since it's been changed over 2K miles ago).

I'm praying he was right.  He advised me to blank the EGR and map it down to minimum values

Will keep you posted...

Was it decatted before or after it was mapped? Who mapped it?

Hi,

it was mapped by AwesomeGTI and has very aggresive map on it, garage said it should really have a stage 2 or 3 clutch and SMF... unless I'll stay light footed.

I think the decat was done just before the map ( At least I hope)

I've pulled the vacuum pipe from the EGR and plugged it temporarily with old speaker jack.... judder has gone ;).

so obviously my 12mm gasket wasn't enough. EML lit up after few miles, but I'll have it mapped out.

No smoke and driveable car, happy days :))
