Unknown ESP problem

So yesterday I was driving along with cruise control I could feel and actually see what was feeling like a missfire. cruising at 70 a judder followed by cruise control turning itself off. so when I got off the motorway I put my foot down, thought it was better to bring any problems to surface. put my foot down and I was expecting *bing* but no, not engine management.. ESP/ABS fault. so I pulled up, turned the car off and on again, the lights had cleared, reversed to full lock left to what was basically a scraping sound when any sort of braking was applied. Then I pulled off to what could only be described and knock every time the wheels down a full revolution, got up to speed of about 20mph and the knock had gone. then... *bing* back on comes the ESP light, ABS and Traction control.

Got home and checked for any codes - no error codes being found yet my dash is lit up like the orange light district haha!

Anyone have any ideas as to what this could be? I was thinking a screwed sensor at first but I get the feeling this isn't going to be a fun one to deal with.

Also to note, it does still feel like it's misfiring to me, a few times when crawling home at 50 the car juddered, Very lumpy gear change also.

Thanks,

Darren.

Did you not have the DSG issue before and it was a Connector for the DSG?

Have the Install of the New Engine checked out by a Competent Mechanic or have Skoda UK Arrange an Inspection if they paid for the Warranty work that was done.

What does the Invoice show.

Was it a New / Factory Refurbished Engine.

Ask Skoda UK what they paid for, and were New Spark Plugs in the Replacement Engine,

have they been changed since,

is the car running the Original Ignition Coils.

Was a New ECU Fitted, has the Original if fitted got the latest Software on it.

DSG Updated, Software to the latest TSP,  Update done not when the car is connected to its own battery but

as TPI etc.

Anything else done?

But most important all connections checked, and codes checked on Skoda / VW Diagnostics.

Yeah, I had the DSG issue previously, I managed to diagnose that myself as a loose terminal.

The problem this time is that I can actually hear a physical knocking from what sounds like the left front wheel.

I don't think i'm gonna have much choice other than to take it back, I am gonna jack it up later on today and just put it in neutral to check my brakes havent slightly locked on and to just have a look to if there's anything obvious on the underneath.

As far as i'm aware EVERYTHING was changed other than the supercharger, i'll have to double check the invoice when I get in. Would an engine issue really bring an ESP warning?

An ECU issue or connection can cause every issue in the car where there are Electric Connections.

And ESP, ABS, XDS, DSG issues can all be connected.

You really should have raised a Case with the first issues after Warranty Work because it is Guaranteed by the Dealership doing work,

and then have a Professional check all is well, and then maybe have a proper trained Mechanic check if a Dealership is covering Shoddy work.

Do not put off issues and tamper and go by trial and error.

?

So what is the story,

What age and miles was the Engine Replaced at,  who fitted it.

How many miles since.

What work or servicing done since.

What issues in total before engine fitted, and what since?

Yeah, I should know that by now haha.

I was going to raise a case but to be honest it was clearly the tray sat on top of the battery, this demonstrates shoddy work of course but after the hassle i've already had I couldn't justify having more over that, it seriously has got me down so much.

The story - heavy oil usage, upon testing it was confirmed 2 misfiring cyclinders, not major but definitely an issue and also a leaking turbo. other than the oil issues the car drove perfectly.

Then came the fun after receiving the car back. first off everything seemed fine, then I had issues with not just 1 but both bearings, the dealer then notified there was issues with my chassis allignment, so I had the chassis realligned and the bearing on the passenger side done (this was the worst), the knocking seems to be definitely coming from that side of the car. I found it a bit strange that there were never any problems before this but as soon as they done work there was. I had the work carried out by white dove skoda in Cardiff. The engine was changed at 34000 miles, the car is now on 37500.

I would also like to add that on the passenger side i've had a knock on full lock for some time now, what I believe to be a track rod end. It does seem that my problems are always on the front left side of the car!

The only thing I have done myself is the BOV adapter which I will be removing tonight just as a bit of a shot in the dark.

always good if two or more have a concensus of opinion , I just expanded on it to explain how to get to it :P

I think the brake wear sensor is on front left side. Perhaps the pads are worn? sounds unlikely to cause any major fault but even a dodgy brake light switch (£17) Throws up an esp warning light! (£100 diagnosis)

My first check was gonna be my break pads as I'm aware they need changing anyways.

Once the abs is off the judder goes so I definitely don't think it's misfiring. When I reverse the brakes make a horrible sound so my guess is new pads.

Thanks for all the help guys, will get the brake off tomorrow and check it out. Will let you know how it gets on!

Bl00dy hell.

I was assuming you knew your brake pads and calipers were good and you at least checked them.

10 minutes covers at least a quick visual check,

but if you knew they were at the point they needed changing how far down are they?

Even models without brake pad sensors may have pads that would have been wired in. These MAY start to make a noise earlier then you need to replace them as the place where they plug in to the pad, (Usually just cut off for convenience) Sticks out a bit and hits the caliber on rotation, making a small but noticeable noise. Makes you want to change them early, even though you'll have around 20% pads left!

I had EBC's like that, I've now got Bosch without sensors so I can wear them down to the last mm!  LOL!

To be honest after having tyres 2 months ago I was told the brakes were all good so never even crossed my mind. I didn't think it would throw up an esp light either.

Anyways,

Turns out it wasn't the pads. However I did have them changed all round with some nice new brembos, discs n'all.

The calliper was apparently causing the problem. Thinking a set of bigger brakes might be my next move though.

Cheers for the help guys, gonna give it a spin when I get home now and hopefully all is well with the green machine.

Well... Things have gotten even more confusing. Turns out they never fitted the discs and pads as the discs I received were too small.

However - the problem is fixed, they took the wheel off realised the replacement discs were too small. Put the wheel back on and now it's fine?

Safe to say I'm beyond belief, the car then went and passed the MOT with flying colours.

Thinking a dodgy sensor?
