999Pooch's next car - Passat Alltrack 190 DSG

So not a declaration of what I've chosen, but a thread of collective thoughts and kindful suggestions from the Briskoda massive :)

My current car, the Golf R, is due to be returned in July 2016, and with some car builds well in excess of 6months I really need to get some idea of - what next?

The Golf has been a truly great all rounder, a few niggles, but completely outweighed by what is a great car. I will be sad to see it go, but I also like new cars, that great feeling of getting your new toy and discovering it's quirks, handling and performance. So a new car it will be :)

It's got to be an all rounder. It will be our only family car (wife & 16 year old). I also cart a lot of stuff from the cash & carry, so nothing smaller than the R which is surprisingly roomy with the back seats down.

It must handle well, no wallowy barges. Performance must be above average, I do like quick cars, but finding I have less and less time (& available roads) to take advantage of this. Definitely no slouches though, I want to overtake quickly & efficiently when required.

Pretty certain I want petrol (hybrida possibility), but think I've ruled out diesel. BMW 35d engine might be the only exception but even this is questionable.

AWD is high on the list, but not absolute. A great 2WD would be an option, but an AWD version of the same car would probaby be preferred.

I will be leasing, as my accountant is adamant he can save me much more this way :) A 2 year lease on a 10k miles is what I will go for, with a total cost not exceeding £11.5k over the period, but nearer £7.5k is my aim.

Oh and A few gadgets / creature comforts would be nice, & being on a lease, these would be better as standard equipment.

So, thoughts please. Given the plethora of cars out there what would you choose given the choice? :)

Audi Rs3 or 2wd option Honda Type R (big boot)?

TBH I would struggle ATM to find something better than the R maybe the estate?

Audi RS3 is what I've had on my list for a while, but can't find one under £12.5k for a 2 year / 10k lease. As good a car as it is I'm not prepared to pay that much for a billy bare bones spec'd car. Would rather get another R. I keep hoping that a great deal pops up on the RS though, but it's not looking good as demand seems high.

Not looked at the Civic, but might be a bit chavvy for me. At 44 I'm looking for more understated looks :D might go and have a look though.

As you said, the R takes some beating as an all rounder :)

Good shout on the Ford RS and 340i, althoughh not sure any lease deals will be available on the RS.

Have you seen the 340i on a good lease lately?

The 330e is on offer, not a bad looking car but no proper reviews yet.

Will need to put a list together of these cars so I don't lose track:)

If you're already thinking about the 335xd, why not consider the 272bhp A4 quattro? Bang up to date with the latest tech too!

Is that the new A4? Last car I owned was the S4, great engine but chasis was poor. Think the new platform will be much better in the A4.

Don't really want an oil burner, the BMW 35d (3 or 4 series), might sway if the price was right. Is the Audi engine as good?

340i Touring I'd definitely look at, as an all-rounder.

Last I saw, it was around £340 a month business (so +VAT) which would put you around the £8k mark total outlay? Suppose there's deposit rate to consider there as well.

Just one example, https://www.nationwidevehiclecontracts.co.uk/BMW_3-series-saloon-new-model-340i-m-sport-65883.htm

With deals like that available it's amazing anyone ever buys a car outright. Outrageous value.

So initial shortlist, will add to as I get more suggestions -

BMW 340i

RS3 (if lease prices reduce by more than 10%)

BMW 330e

Mercedes c350e

Golf R

Yeti (not sure which one)

BMW 335xd

Ford RS (unlikely as lease deals unlikely to be good)

Yes it's the newly released A4 - details here. Dunno how good the engine (3.0) is though as I only managed to drive the 150 demo that was available. The local dealers aren't getting any big engined cars in until January at the earliest.

I may be biased but how about an M135i?

Would tick a lot of your boxes - biggish boot, 5-door, very quick, RWD handling fun, nice 6-cyl soundtrack. And most importantly it's not a diesel!

Deffo on the list :) not the best looking car, but a beaut of an engine.

If the right deal comes along.........
