Oil spewing from oil cooler?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Upon trying to fix my car (which is in another thread), my friends battery was dead due to the severe cold snap we're having here at the moment. When the battery was changed he started the engine which worked fine, then we heard a pop and I saw oil spewing rather rapidly from the top of a seal close to the engine. Googling this it appears to be the oil cooler but I'm not sure what part is actually broken or would need to be changed in order to stop the leaking.

The car is a UK spec Superb that has been exported. If it is the oil cooler, why is it needed and could it be bypassed as it does not appear to be there on models sold in Eastern Europe.
