lights are on in daylight

Recommended Posts

Sometimes in daylight conditions the light are on. Always leave the light on auto; if you turn lights off they go off but back in auto they come on.

This when it happen also seems to affect the stop start and fuel consumption. The stop start does not work if the lights are on in daylight, I know that there are a lot of variables to get the stop start to work, But a motorway trip of 1.5 hours in good conditions temp 12 c, and stop start does not work I find strange, as normally when the lights do not come on I can drive in the same conditions 2/3 miles and it works fine.

Also the mpg seams to drop if the light are on, the mpg is normally very constant with my driving.

stop-start still operates with the dipped beam lights on (auto) on our Superb.

When stationary for a while (eg level crossing) I've manually turned off the lights, though I've no idea if this actually made a difference.

With regards to the lights coming on in daylight. My car also does this and I've also seen it mentioned before.

I think it's under certain light conditions (even bright daylight) they come on to improve the visibility of you.

And with regards to stop/start I can see how it can make a difference to it working or not.

2x 55w headlight bulbs is about 8 to 9 amps being drawn which is having to be supplied by the batter/alternator.

On an L&K model with xenon lights the impact will be less as they draw less power.

I can't see how Dipped Lights on should make any difference. I drive with my dipped headlights on all the time and it never impacts stop/start. I have have xenons though which are lower output. There are other conditions that impact the headlights coming on even when in 'auto' - if your windscreen wipers are active for a number of wipes (the specific number of wipes etc are detailed in the manual) this will activate the dipped beams.

Also, if you drive over 90 mph this will also activate headlights also. A dirty or damaged sensor could also cause this.

The issue of lights coming on during the day for no apparent reason (when in auto) has been reported by a lot of members on here.

The car is a superb greenline iii est.

the problem is that in bright daylight when the lux level should turn off the lights, they are on.

This is also affecting the stop/start and the consumption.

i know of most of the interlocks that affect the stop/start, and lights.

When i say in fine conditions i mean that it was sunny temp about 12deg no rain.

My lights do exactly the same in certain very bright conditions they are on, it seems to be the sun at a low angle that just confuses the sensor. I cannot say it affects the fuel consumption or the stop/start. My consumption seems to stay about the same around the low 60's according to the dash, I can't say I monitor it that closely.

I can't see how headlights will really have a large effect on the consumption.

If you're car is the CR170 version then that is around 126,000 watts of power. Two 55w bulbs is around 0.009% of that total power; highly unlikely to have any noticeable effect. It is more likely that crosswind or AC is causing the reduction.

Its not the current drain that would be affecting the consumption but the onboard computer that is affecting the consumption.

Just as a lot of them have to get reprogramed to sort the emisions  out.

Not sure I quite follow you there??  Are you saying that because the lights are on that the computer itself is preventing stop/start from functioning as it should?

You'll have to get yourself a VCDS cable and a willing passenger, they can monitor everything as you drive and see if the conditions have been met for stop/start.

Without data everything else is just pure guess work...

The stop start turns off if the battery is drained.

The speed at which a battery drains depends on its condition.

One person saying their stop start works with the headlights on and another saying it doesn't probably suggests that the conditions of your batteries vary.

The Greenline is only available with the 1.6 CR105 engine.

Failing batteries are well documented to have strange effects on Skoda cars.

I support the advice to get the car scanned using VCDS to check for any fault codes. After that I'd be trying a new battery.

there are no fault codes.

the bat is new.

as stated before after an 1.5 hour moterway trip it still will not work somtimes. where as some times when auto light are not on stop/start works after a couple om miles.

So you've managed to rule out obvious system faults, great.

Now the hard bit starts, you need to find out exactly what the requirements are for stop/start then go for a drive while you monitor each one. To do this, I would recommend a combination of VCDS and to find/read VW's self study programme 426. This will tell you what conditions are required for stop/start to work and also any other conditions that will stop it working.

There is certainly a German version of SSP426 floating around the internet and I've seen at least the start of an English version.

105BHP = 78200 watts of power. Guessing Xenon lights so 35w a piece is around 0.1% of the total power available - in other words it is immeasurable by the OBC.

I really can't believe you can see the OBC showing lower economy with the lights on.

It does sound like you need to get into a dealer to take a look or see if a local member can scan with VCDS for you
