DSG Oil change & service

Recommended Posts

I have my 2.0 Tdi Elegance estate booked in for a service at my trusted local independent garage next week. I had asked them to do the DSG oil change/service but they think that the work requires a special tool which they don't have. (They sent my Mk 1 Superb to a specialist for the gearbox oil when that was needed). Two questions really if someone can help - is this correct, and as the car has now done 83k miles should it definitely be carried out again? (Gearbox had oil/filters changed at 36k)

Many thanks!

Yes to do it properly it requires a specialist tool. The oil is filled from the drain hole on the bottom of the gearbox through a special plug.

If they are an independant garage, then send them this link. It's possible to do it without the tool.

This is for an Octavia but it should be the same.

The oil should be changed every 40,000 miles, so yes it will need doing.

Many thanks for the reply. I decided to buy the tool although it can be done without. I bought it on eBay for just under £80:

I will give to my garage for the job. It saves me the aggro of taking the car elsewhere, as the car is due a service and MOT and I trust them having used them for the last few years. I will then probably sell it on again unless I can persuade them to buy it from me!

An independent workshop a few km's up the road use a flushing device on VW DSG-boxes.  They told me it was impossible to just drain all the used oil, so to be sure the DSG-box leaves the workshop with all new oil, they use their flushing technique.

As per the link above. I changed my oil myself 15,000 miles ago. Didn't bother with the special tool as I've read doing it that way often results in a slight under-fill.

Using the proper tool they need to be able to monitor the DSG oil temperatures with VCDS or similar too as it relies on the oil being a specific temperature.

An independent garage near me uses the machine that flushes the gearbox, but they quoted £100 for the use of the machine plus the oil, filters etc. I figured that I should be able to sell the tool on if that's what I decide, and feel that the ordinary technique does a good enough job(?)

My local independent who usually do my servicing wanted £149 for the DSG oil and filter change. I wanted the dealership to check the DSG was performing well as the car was approaching the end of its warranty so asked the dealership to do it instead and I think I paid £175 but with the DSG once over too. So only £25 difference anyway.

The dashcam picked up the testing they did and also the specific bit of kit used to carry out the oil change too. :)

The fact that not all the oil comes out is part of the reason for the changes every 40k miles I think.

By all means a flush can't do it any harm but not sure it's really worth it.

I may just do the next change a little earlier as the car has always done pretty low mileages. It's currently only just ticked over 55k miles.

Also a good idea to perform basic settings on the box after a change as it relearns all the clutch bite points and runs a full test on all the actuators etc.

Seemed to make mine feel much better afterwards.
