radiator fan

The wife's Fabia has just come back from being serviced by the usual VW independent garage. They have reported that the radiator fan is not working on the first speed and a new fan is required. The fan runs on the second speed so does anyone know how the two speeds are controlled? I don't want to replace the fan motor assembly just to find that there is a resistor unit or similar controlling the lower speed.

Speed of the fan is controlled by the fan control module. Have a look on Google to see what its like, and then see if your car has one, it will be in the nearside near the chassis leg, close to the bottom of the radiator itself.

Have you tried the fuses? I take it the garage would have checked.

Does the fan operate when the a/C is turned on?

I don't drive it that much, but I will check it tomorrow.

Was the AC on at the time they noticed?

I don't know what the Fabia set-up is like but I had similar issues with my golf. With the AC on both the aux. fan and main fan spin at a low speed. If the smaller aux. fan fails, the larger main fan will run at full speed. Replacing the aux. fan cured the problem.

The Fabia only has one fan, which runs at two speeds. The car has climate control so its in auto most of the time.
