Kellaway's Fabia VRS

I have acquired on the 27/01/2016 a new toy, a 2007 Skoda Fabia VRS in red with 116k on the clock and full Skoda main dealer history.

The car has a few issues that need sorting and im aiming for a nice OEM+ Look.

I'm very happy to be in a car now with some power as ive been running around in a Pug 206 1.4hdi for the last few years to save money!

I use to be the proud owner of this 306 gti 6

24561981820_d7ee7b683e_b.jpg

Unfortunately the running costs got out of hand and she had to go! Im hoping the Fabia can replace some of the excitement!

Here are some pictures from the advert on Ebay.

So i spent the next couple of days gathering parts for a full service, Plumbers Gold for the doors, new Bosch Aero Retrofit wipers and fresh coolant as its looking like some one has mixed the original g12 with some other anti-freeze and its now turned a lovely shade of brown!

Yer, I was concerned at first. no other signs of impending doom at the moment. I'm hoping to flush and change the coolant this week then praying it doesn't return. I've seen in other vehicles when the coolant and oil have mixed from nackard oil coolers and this doesn't look the same.

So changed that over, much better.

24843684032_c89e5b527a_z.jpg

Next was to tackle the poor braking performance, had quite a lot of pedal travel and no real feel in the brakes.

The rears are my first point of call as they are looking very past their best.

So car jacked up

24981998099_ce01038369_k.jpg

So the problems then began, i stick my 450nm impact wrench on the wheel nuts, hit the trigger and expect the nut to come flying out. Nope, nothing just hammering away with no sign of movement.    All the wheel nuts where frozen solid, after a lot of swearing and shouting jumping up and down on my breaker bar with the jack handle over it they finally they come loose! The problem seams to have been caused by over tightening at some point and the corrosion bond between the steel bolts and alloy wheel.

The offenders!

25256704601_686f97504d_k.jpg

Finally with the wheel off i'm greeted by this.

24719054564_360b09a5ca_z.jpg

Think they are due a replacement!  :x

First off remove the disc retaining screw, easy with the right tool.

24719058464_037568a74d_z.jpg

24719062534_bb86bbfa4d_z.jpg

Next remove the 13mm caliper retaining bolts.

24719067804_62b0ddc009_z.jpg

No problems here

24719072754_89da4b609f_z.jpg

Disc removed with nice hits of the ball pein!

25323495466_e1bf60f026_z.jpg

Front

24982029809_f24a22b27b_z.jpg

Back

25349700195_aea1e10712_z.jpg

Nice crusty nipple removed next, yet again a few choice words where said!

24722951073_21250778ba_z.jpg

Quick clean up

25231444822_39e85b3a83_k.jpg

Next push the pistons back with the brake bleeder open so not to force yucky fluid back into the system.

25054113700_0f8034923a_k.jpg

Some weight saving occurred, fell off with the slightest touch. Not planning on replacing them as not a MOT failure, and don't really see the need.

25256624171_003a29adba_k.jpg

Bit of a clean up

25349726275_abfdc1bad3_k.jpg

24719116224_5f964653d4_k.jpg

24982068299_12ba42c59c_k.jpg

Sliders re-greased with the correct red brake grease.

New goodies!

25349742805_cd133593e1_k.jpg

25231485372_4120fd75ba_k.jpg

24722997253_58b91c43c9_k.jpg

24719142394_e38082852f_k.jpg

All celaned up and ready to do, you dont have to go mad with the cooper slip, to much and it just attracts dirt.

Im going to be ordering some VRS green paint to give them a nice paint in the future.

25349767105_75414c89bd_k.jpg

25323577046_3623ec9b35_k.jpg

All back together, looking like a big improvement.

24982110609_7981d4f0c9_k.jpg

While the wheel's are off best give the inside's a quick clean.

25256685391_3e259ce2d9_k.jpg

24719173564_9f66606389_k.jpg

Finished off with cleaning the wheel bolts up, hopefully will stop them freezing solid again.

24723038103_59563e1586_k.jpg

Other side was equally as bad

25256700101_3c705ce4c4_k.jpg

25054214430_66d4d89f1a_k.jpg

So stuck the new disc's and pads on, looking much better.

25054220340_7d8e0dee7e_k.jpg

Got more of an update to put on later today :)

I had similar swearing related problems with the rears on my Ibiza FR. When i removed the bleed nipples they came out with the caliper threads at the same time.

I was very surprised when i was able to free all 4 nipples with out damage! Very touch and go lol

So next up was to do a full brake fluid change.

25287863581_013add443b_k.jpg

Was 4.99 for 1ltrs from ECP or 9.99 for 5ltrs, madness.

The Gunson Bleeder makes this job very easy!

24982176729_0804776b2d_k.jpg

25323644526_7b7aee7667_k.jpg

24982168049_87d17620a1_k.jpg

So went round and managed to remove all the nipples with out breaking any! Gave them all a clean up with the wire wheel.

Bled a total of 2ltrs new fluid though the whole system with out any problems.

How ever, when checking over the front brakes.

24723095813_6c345a3c65_k.jpg

Both sides lower slider pins where stuck solid. Managed to free the Offside one and discovered the reason!

25323651526_e15ad0fa12_k.jpg

COOPER SLIP!  :swear:  :swear:  :swear:

The rubber insert on the pin was completely swollen and nackard!

The drivers side i was unable to remove the pin at all probably due to the swollen rubber insert stopping it coming out the carrier, it would spin but not move forwards or backwards!

After looking at the price of new slider pins (£22)  :finger: and the hassel of freeing up the other side I've decided to go down the 312mm brake upgrade route.

The good news is that after changing the rear and the brake fluid i've not got quite a nice pedal feel back, cant wait to get the 312mm on!

So watch this space!

When i worked as an apprentice mechanic many years ago i remember the qualified ones putting copper slip on the sliders all the time.
It wasn't until later i discovered you need to use the specific stuff you mentioned a few posts above. 312mm conversion is a good choice. Practical and look great and not overly expensive.

So had a day off work today and the Fabia had developed a annoying rattle sound in the rear so i set about to investigate!

First up she goes.

25325971781_24a87beef9_b.jpg

Think i have found the problem!

24792235463_5de19dcf42_b.jpg

25325982311_800f36b4a3_b.jpg

25300623782_b5bc1cd8dd_b.jpg

The spring washers have broken off allowing the exhaust shield to rattle on the exhaust.

So the first job was to consume these.

25051384579_993a579cb1_b.jpg

Then remove the spare wheel as i was going to pop rivet the shield back on.

25123350970_b26a3657d7_b.jpg

25123360070_18c83dc35c_b.jpg

Consumption of beer becomes clear, perfect repair material.

24788406674_cfa41cb3ec_b.jpg

Left side

25300647372_9322466c16_b.jpg

Right Side

25392837156_6fd30278cb_b.jpg

All fixed, very solid now with 4 x rivets holding it up.

24788420774_303a7bbc00_b.jpg

As that was a quick fix i decided since the spare was out would give the holder and the spare wheel a clean up.

25418998575_6b66685d78_b.jpg

25051423549_21f25d8178_b.jpg

25300679272_3ee5ce63f8_b.jpg

24788450184_a91c658f33_b.jpg

25051441169_c71854c9b2_b.jpg

Gave the wheel lock a clean up and grease.

25326059631_b3f2dc2b0f_b.jpg

25392884496_9c992e399e_b.jpg

24792329123_1de6023e14_b.jpg

Then i went and picked up some goodies for the weekend, here is a sneak peak of things to come :D

I just pulled the heat shield off, its loose on my other Fabia i've just bought and will be doing the same with that one!

That was my plan at first, however it was In perfect nick apart from the fixing points, so decided to save it. However if it drops down again it's getting the chop!

312mm Brake Upgrade - Prep

So i won some Audi TT 2004 ATE 312mm Calipers, Carriers, nearly new disc's and pads off Ebay for an absolute steal! The next day i nipped up to Hartlepool to collect them.

They are in very nice condition, but a clean up and some paint is in order.

24857095933_89ffe8d649_b.jpg

25390969751_7d940fae40_b.jpg

25365365332_f53f4ca25d_b.jpg

First off to free the bleed nipples and banjo bolts.

25188232440_8b1ba7d619_b.jpg

Then remove the calipers from the sliders

25116274709_1f6b546e66_b.jpg

25188238580_d1cf7f71c7_b.jpg

Pistons checked for free movement! Both fine.

Slider before

25365379172_f3e498a61c_b.jpg

Slider after

25390988371_16d1fcfa13_b.jpg

Tool for the job!

25188250910_c4c817cd1d_b.jpg

All prepped ready for paint!

25365387162_28b69d3b8e_b.jpg

25188255700_55367644c7_b.jpg

25390999061_a80319a468_b.jpg

Couple of shots with the paint still wet.

25188259610_5cf001bcba_b.jpg

25483844965_41c1e6fe97_b.jpg

After a day or so of drying!

25483846995_6d0897e1da_b.jpg

Got a few things left to go before i'm going to install them, need to tap out all the holes to remove the paint from the threads and clean up some of the rubber parts and bleed nipples that

got paint on! The paint was a bit of a nightmare to work with in my cold garage!

Then nip to ECP pick up some new pads then hopefully all going well get them installed!

So got the 312MM Brakes on today!

Started out with getting her on axle stands

25137592569_c6e6a8a32c_b.jpg

Before shot!

25505116965_77b2590dda_b.jpg

Wheel off.

24874575514_68a5f78d20_b.jpg

Yummmy!

25137602189_7d2cbc833b_b.jpg

Drivers side

24874583884_0185339e43_b.jpg

Yet again, dont bother if you dont have an Impact Screwdriver!

25209525870_2a91b9c8df_b.jpg

Loosen brake hose banjo bolt before removing caliper.

25209535890_ab124230e2_b.jpg

Remove 18mm carrier bolts! Boy they where tight.

25412350861_a634dce62a_b.jpg

Working them back and forward with the impact got them out!

24878432923_c505958c3a_b.jpg

Pry carrier and pads off!

25412357001_a20e55519f_b.jpg

Yum

24878438643_455e9e224a_b.jpg

Place old caliper out of the way for now.

25209549960_2beb339177_b.jpg

Now, this is where things get interesting, I've had the car just over a month. I purchased it off a dealer who put on a full mot on the car on the day of collection. Now I've never liked how

the brakes felt since day one. Doing the rears and changing the fluid improved the feel of the brakes but they still wern't that great.

So you can imagine how happy i was to see the state of these discs and pads!

25412365651_317166187e_b.jpg

25209556130_c3c6bdc6fe_b.jpg

24878460053_d04e848a48_b.jpg

25412384551_e70cf9d3ed_b.jpg

Now, im no mot tester but i cant see how these could pass!.

But here is the best part.

24878457053_80fcedc40a_b.jpg

The friction material was completely separated from the back on the pad and was just loose inside of the caliper! Im very anoyed with the dealer and shall be paying him a visit Monday Morning.

I decided to reuse the discs that i got as they turned out to be Brembo, how every the pads where cheap nasty Drytec. So opted for new.

Back together with the sliders greased in the proper grease.

So took her out for a test drive and WOW. I nearly put my self though the windscreen. Amazing pedal feel and lots of bite and no squirming around on breaking anymore!

Now I'm looking forward to Monday morning when i go have a "quiet" word with the dealer!

Looking good. I fitted the same head unit to mine. I also fitted cup holders but went for the Lupo setup. Now to get my 312mm brakes fitted and the new rear brakes I've had for the last few months!
