Time for a Change

After eight trouble-free years of Skoda ownership, four years with my Superb, three European road trips and a lot of thought I've made a big decision today and put a deposit down on this...

When the Superb III came out I thought that would be my next car, but I've always liked the look of the XF and having previously been tempted by a Superb V6, when I saw this car on offer at a similar price to a new Superb L&K my head was turned. Its a 2013 car, with the 3.0 V6 supercharged petrol engine, originally a demonstrator and then with one private owner, only 28,000 miles and comes with a two year Jaguar approved used warranty. The previous owner has paid a huge chunk of the depreciation and I can see myself keeping this car for a long time.  

 

So if anyone on here is looking for that rare animal, a Superb II 2.0TSI twindoor, check out the For Sale forum...

Not as much rear legroom as in the Superb, but plenty of luggage space and has a split folding rear seat if we need it

 

We did also consider a Jaguar XE but decided it was too small, so that led to looking at the option of a used XF

Nice car! My father in law bought one last year when we changed to a Superb. We both came from Volvo. Until he bought his XF I had never considered a Jaguar as I thought they would be prohibitively expensive. Second hand they appear almost dirt cheap and they are pretty fully equipped.

A good car but the saloon boot opening is tiny making it very difficult to fully utilise the big boot.

 

Maybe when the kids have gone it would be something I'd look at.

 

A mate a work has one, a black 2010 3.0 litre diesel. Lovely inside, it has the ivory interior and optional alcantara headlining, the way the gear lever pops up and the vents open is a nice touch. When accelerating out of work there is a clunk under the rear seats. I can hear / feel it but he can't, might just be me!

 

One thing that I'd be unhappy with though is the doors, when pulling the handles they feel really flimsy, almost as though the outer door skin is flexing, the doors feel too light. I keep thinking back to the VW Golf advert where the way the doors closed matched that of a more expensive car. A small oversight from Jaguar but in my eyes an important one.

I agree that the size of the boot opening isn't great

 

Mine also has the ivory interior and alcantara headlining - makes a nice contrast with the British Racing Green paint

 

Interested in your comment about the doors, but the doors on mine felt really solid when I drove it yesterday. There was a facelift model introduced in 2012 and maybe the facelift included some interior quality improvements?

A lad at work had a face lift XFS diesel and I was surprised how enclosed you felt when inside for such a big looking car. 

 

I loved the styling outside & inside, it was really smart, a lot better than the E-class he has now although the build quality wasn't quite German but it wasn't too far off. After all Jaguar/Landrover was owned by Ford so you can blame them if any bits fall off it :p  

 

I don't care for those stupid vents though, they are going to be a pain to sort out when they inevitably fail

I absolutely love the look and the image of the XF, but I couldn't fit my kids in the back. Wouldn't fancy Jag parts and servicing prices, either.

 

German build quality is a bit of a canard - I had a Golf GTi Mk1 (back in the days of "if only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen") - it would only start on 2 days out of 5 and had an apocalyptic rattle in the driver's door which I only solved with liberal quantities of polystyrene piping.  Test drove an Audi A6 a while back and was thoroughly unimpressed by the tacky interior.  Audi and BMW seem to do badly in customer satisfaction surveys as well, from what I hear.

 

So I stick with the Superb: space (more than Star Trek); pace (especially with the remap) and grace (I can believe the rumours that Bentley breathed on the chassis).  For £10350 (12-plate), I have a limousine with all the toys, Hollywood ivory leather and the day-to-day running costs of a Mondeo. The Columbus is a bit creaky, but, apart from that, I can't think of a single better all-round car I could have bought for that money.

I thought long and hard before deciding to move on from the Superb. Its very well equipped, a great combination of performance and refinement and with the 0% VAT offer on in 2012 I couldn't see anything else like it for the price. You can't quite say the same about the Superb III, although the SE L 220 TSI is still a lot of car for £27k.

 

I first saw the XF advertised at the end of last year. A price cut at the end of January plus a deposit contribution offer brought it within budget. There are very few V6 petrol XFs around. I've only seen three others for sale - all with higher mileage or at higher prices and two in colours that weren't for me. So once I'd seen the condition of the car and driven it I thought this was an opportunity that might not come along again any time soon. We don't have kids so losing a bit of space in the back wasn't an issue for us. I'm braced for higher running costs, but reassured by having a two year Jaguar warranty.

We looked quite seriously at the XE, as a replacement for her Octy vRS,but we were not impressed.

It was the 2.0L, 240 PS Ford petrol engine, & seemed to have no real sparkle at all. .

 

As for the space inside, 'twas a joke, it made her car feel spacious!

 

 

 

The XF is a different car & I'd imagine that with the blown V6, quite fun to live with.
