octavia mk1 1.8t remap

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am new to the forum and skoda.

I have an early Octavia 1.8t and want to remap. It's not giving the return on fuel I expected for a 150bhp motor. But maybe my right foot is too heavy.

I am averaging around 26mpg according to the trip computer.

Not looking for a massive bhp increase but would like as much torque as possible and more economy if possible.

Can anyone recommend the best place for a live map or remap around Bristol please.

There is quantum tuning advertising locally, but I know nothing of them.

Only folk I know to be good around here around fc performance, but they specialize in Italian motors and wasn't sure what he could do on a 1.8t.

Any suggestions of companies folk have used locally and found to be good would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Welcome to the forum.

That fuel economy does seem low, I had a 1.8T S3 and I could still get mid-high 30's on a run.

These engines are quite old now and many of the parts have been superceded.

Before taking it to a tuner I'd get it running 100% spot on and my first port of call would be a VCDS diagnostic scan, I'm sure a local member can help you out with that.

The PCV/Vacuum system is prone to leaking on these and can cause running issues. I'd personally simplify it with something like Samco vacuum hose and remove all the crap that isn't need.

Quick list of things I'd replace and do prior to a remap to make the best of the 1.8T

Coil Packs

Mass Air Flow Meter

N75 Valve

Turbo Actuator (probably lazy with age)

Recirculation Valve

Simplify PCV system (catch can)

Delete N249 / Secondary Air Injection / Charcoal Cannister

Service - Oil/Filter change / Air filter change / Fuel Filter Change / New Spark Plugs (OEM)

I'll leave you to do your research. Audi-Sport and UK-MKIVS are a good resource for 1.8T as well, I'd say most topics/questions have been raised by now.

I know the costs of all that will add up, but it will help get the best out the car (even at Stage 1) and should make it more reliable.

My mapper of choice is R-Tech in Hinckley, had 4 cars mapped by them and I live in Aberdeen which speaks for itself. Badger5 is probably closer to you and can do custom remaps as well.

To save wasting you and the tuners time though, you'll want to make sure the car is running 100% right before you turn up :)

Thank you Yohan,

I appreciate the advise. I'll digest this info.

I understand what a catch can is, but have no idea about Delete N249! Will look into R-Tech. I have found a company called TSR in Bridgewater, but prefer recommendations. Thank you.

The most I have got on a run is about 28/29mpg!

God bless.

My take on it is that these cars are worth peanuts now, and mods dont add any value so I bought myself a remapped ecu off ebay with the immobiliser delete for £70. As far as I can tell the main difference between plug and play and going in for a remap is that somewhere decent might smoke test it first and read your fault codes.

With the saving i've made I can basically afford for it to blow up one engine and replace it.

its plug and play so it can come straight off if it starts running poorly but so far its doing everything I ask of it. My commute into work is motorway stuff at a steady 75-80 and I average 38mpg on the way in, on the way home giving it some beans but not being too silly 30-33mpg. being daft 25mpg. All on 99 feul.

Its all horses for courses. Mine had fully dealer history and besides one dealership breaking my cars original engine (nothing at all to do with the ecu, penny pinching lazy garage couldnt be bothered to spend £11 on new bolts, but could be bothered to charge me £30 for coolant) its serviced by me twice a year and im alright with spannering at home. Personally besides the remapped ecu, s2k filter and forge 008 recirc mine is engine wise as it left the factory. I've got a code reader and its not reported any issues.

I did replace a load of rubber pipework as a precaution. (Y pipe, a few vac lines etc)

There's a bit more to it than that. You pay your money, you take your chances.

A custom Stage 1 from R-Tech with full health check is £250. That will be a map tailored to your hardware. Yes there are many 1.8Ts out there, but they all perform differently.

If you can replace an engine for £180 that's great, but it's not an ideal option for everybody :)
