Boot opens itself - is it haunted? Or is the convenience control module?

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I'm writing this from Sydney - not sure if there are many Sydney Skoda drivers here...if so g'day!  :sun:

My car - 2009 Octavia RS 2.0 TSI petrol- has developed an interesting and most annoying fault. It's already been into the Skoda garage 4 times and not yet been repaired. It would be so helpful to hear if anyone else has had this fault or can present another cause for it which I can ask the garage to investigate.

The boot lid will open itself (release from the latch like if i were to press the handle/ press the remote) pretty much when it wants. My morning routine usually involves me having to close it around 5 times before it eventually stops and I can drive off...and even then sometimes it might pop open whilst i'm en route somewhere.

The alarm has also gone off during the night on a couple of occasions - i thought this was related to the boot popping open but on the last occasion the boot was definitely shut.

The Skoda garage have tried adjusting the boot lock, replaced the mechanism and most recently replaced the boot release handle/button but none of this has resolved it. Today they have told me their next idea is to replace the convenience control module...which didn't sound cheap (~$1000 / £500).

Before the replace it though they said they would bring in the help of someone they work with for the incar computers to see if he might be able to repair my module / take a look but there was no guarantee he would find anything or if even a replacement module would fix the problem.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? I searched through the site but couldn't see anything which matched my issue...only driverside doors or boots that wouldn't open. Could it be that my module has had some water damage and given that its just the boot lid/perhaps alarm it is repairable...or needs to be replaced?

I'll continue to update the thread with how this unravels incase it's of help to someone else, but if anyone has any ideas...please help me!

So as an update.....The garage removed the convenience control module and sent it to their electrical specialist who said he couldn't see anything wrong with it and gave it the clean bill of health. The garage put the module back in and the the fault seems to have stopped.....The mechanic wanted to take the car home to see if the fault might re-appear and run some additional diagnostics....

I'll keep you posted when I get the car back tomorrow. Fingers crossed unplugging re-plugging solved it.

I had the same problem on my octavia vrs when i bought it when it was 2 years old,it took 4 attempts by the dealer to fix it & the final fix was they said they replaced a control unit & it has never done it again in the 5 years ive had the car,the boot seal filling with water can cause problems as well but looking where you live that may not be a problem like it is here in the UK.  :D

Thanks Mikey! Glad to know it isn't just me out there who has had this fault!

When you say they replaced a control unit, can you remember what it was? Was it a different part to the convenience control module?

Just incase the fault comes back I can at least get them to try this next if it worked for you!

And it does get very wet here! The tropical weather means we get quite heavy storms frequently! They keep that bit off the tourism guides though haha

Thanks for posting this and for the updates - my 2007 Octavia estate has developed the same problem. It only happens when I've had to use the boot unlock button on the remote (as the tailgate button sometimes doesn't work after unlocking the car) - after closing the boot, it sometimes pops open, either straight away (not so bad) or a minute or two later (less good if already driving). Just trying to track down solutions. WD40 on the lock solved the tailgate button issue for a week or so - will try that again and see if it stops the spontaneous boot opening too.

Final update (I hope!)..... I've had the car back for a little over the week and the fault has disappeared...Perhaps the mechanics did indeed conduct an exorcism to rid the boot of the troll-demon....They seem just as dumbfounded as me!

So - for those who are experiencing the same issue - before getting to the point where you replace your convenience control module. Try plugging it back in again and seeing if that fixes it!!

I'm just happy that I no longer have to deal with this:

I'm going to follow your advice this week. The garage replaced the boot lock mechanism a couple of days ago but it made no difference. They're a bit stumped but I relayed your experience and they said it's worth a try. Fingers crossed it works... I'll report back.

Just for the record, this problem has recently started with my Skoda Superb 2009. If anyone has any further advice to this thread I'd appreciate it. Otherwise I'll phone our nearest Skoda garage and ask for an exorcism.

Usually just the micro switch on the boot release handle. Had it with my jetta and a few other vag modles at work. Usually find locking the car while driving stops it happening. Could also be the wires in boot hinge area that are starting to break.

A delayed follow-up to my previous message as still having trouble with the boot release. Replacing the boot lock mechanism made no difference and neither did unplugging and replugging the Convenience Control module. I'm just experimenting with locking the car from inside while driving instead.

Sorry for writing in an old thread. But Ive had the same issue with the bootlock. Ripped the boot apart today and found out that the handle, the thing you push in to open the lock was moisty. The rubberseal gets harder after a few years allowing water to enter and that was the problem in my cars case. I simply took a towel and papper and when it was dry I put some lubricant, in form of Silicon Gel (resistant to water and salt) on it. Now it works just fine again :) Could be a good thing to be carefull when the car gets older so you dont use a high pressure wash to close at the bootlock.

:)
