2004 mk1 octavia vRS

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

I used to be a member on the forum a few years ago and loved the advice and banter. Loved my car a huge amount. So I'm back this time for good.

Anyway. I bought my new car, (as per title) and have a few niggling issues with it:

1. The driver side window has a new regulator in it and the window keeps dropping down from the front. I'm assuming that the window needs firmly put back into the runner correctly. However, is the door card easy enough to strip down and fix the window?

2. The car has been sitting a while and the man i bought it from put a new clutch into her. However the engagement of 1st gear is a little too easy. To explain it in some way there is no notch pushing forward to engage the gear if you know what i mean. And when you do engage it, it flies into gear and makes a little crunch noise. Any idea's?

3. As the car has been sitting a while, the interior is really really bad. I have just hoovered it and tried to wipe the seats clean with a microfibre cloth and plain water. Its got some of it off but I'm a bit unsure what to use on the seats to properly clean them. There is some really bad marks on the seats and was wondering how the seats and the carpets react to a deep seat and floor shampoo with a machine?

4. When you give it the beans, the turbo spools up nicely but when you keep the foot down, it does a little stutter. it keeps going but you can feel the turbo hold off a touch? Maybe in need of a good service and filter change but its something i feel i should gain advice on.

thanks for reading and look forward to the replies and advice. God its good to be back

Removing the door card is fairly simple, some star drives/torx round the outside of the door card, a screw behind the door handle and 3 screws behind the grab handle then lifts up, refitting the door release cable to the handle on refit can be a bit fiddly for the first time but once you have done it you see how it goes. Access is very limited behind there too.

The turbo thing on acceleration sounds the same as my friends Leon fr, 3rd gear acceleration it seems to back off a little but does keep going and then comes back a bit, its not massive but noticeable, so might be normal, I cant really comment on the octavia as mine has been remapped and drives OK. ....as far as I know.

Cheers for the replies.

Yeah i spotted the door card removal thread about 20 mins ago and read it through so happy days.

I also spotted the thread about using a soft brush and some meguiars cleaning product on the door cards and maybe pre treating the seats and carpets prior to machine cleaning etc.

I reckon a good service on the car like i plan too anyway should help if not sort out the hesitant accelaration issue.

About the gear change issue though, i know that when i used to drive a skoda diesel as a taxi many moons ago they had the same problem. its as if when you engage 1st gear from basically a standstill it crunches and when it goes into gear it goes in far too easily. its hard to explain

Having just changed the regulator it sounds like they didn't tighten up the front nut properly on the glass clamp. Easy enough to do, take door card off drop window so you can get the socket through the access holes and set the window correctly and tighten up. Then stick the door card back on which will probably take you more time than the window clamp!

cool beans

The car itself was sitting about for 5 months after the clutch failed on it and the mechanic at my work bought it hence how i have it. he put another clutch on it and mot'd it for me yesterday. i got it for a good price and its my second vrs. my first being a mk2 tdi vrs in sprint yellow. it was gorgeous and i loved it, and it broke my heart when I had to sell it.

Anyway is there anything you would recommend to me for the car: ie mods, tuning, styling all the usual bits and bobs

cheers

Guys looking for advice. I have an engine management light on the dash. It only happened when i started the car after a few days sitting. I need to put it on the computer and find out what the code is and the issue is. does anyone live near the cricklewood/kilburn area and have a VCDS diagnostic scanner. I can travel to meet up with someone if need be but obviously not crazy miles. I would make it worth their while. I could put it onto the scanner at skoda when I put it in for the coil recall but they want £100 just to scan the codes.

Also I'm changing the spark plugs on the car and was wondering what plugs are recommended for the car and what the electrode gap should be set at. Someone mentioned 0.7mm and denso plugs.

Thanks guys any advice would be much appreciated.

Don't pay them 100 for that. You could get a cable and free trial of vcds lite for a lot less! Also generic code readers will help although may not go the full way. Hope someone lives near. Also try a post in diagnostics section. P.s a local garage would probably charge less than 30 to read and clear codes, plus it could open up a helpful relationship.

I might be able to help read the codes if you can get to Stevenage. I have VCDS Lite on my laptop but haven't tried it since I did a clean install on it so would need a bit of time to try it out on mine first.

I've been using NGK Platinum PFR6Q plugs which I believe are the recommended plugs for the car. Not had any problems and they last a lot longer than the cheaper copper ones. They should come set to 0.8mm gap, I've never adjusted mine but will check the next time I replace them.

You reduce the gap for a remap. Think to 0.6? Maybe 0.7 can't remember it's been a while. Don't have plugs to worry about like that anymore

VRs TOM: That would be wicked mate. I would be able to do Stevenage no problems whenever the time suits. I work nightshift on the railway so I would be able to find time somewhere along the line. If that suits yourself. I wil PM you when I'm free and will see if we can meet up.

Just looking too find out the exact score for the fault and tbh find a mk1 enthusiast like myself who can give me hints tips and ways to look after the mk1 octy the way it deserves to be. The last guy looked after it not too bad but I'm a bit of a preventer and would change every nut bolt and washer for the sake of the piece of mind if I could. I read a lot of your threads and posts and I love the advice you guys give when people have problems and issues and their is ALWAYS and answer of a variety of conclusions and it make for great reading. One of the reasons I returned to SKODA. Not only reliable but if things do go tits up the advice and help is always sound

Hey Billy welcome back,

I cleaned my carpets and seats (the silvery mesh) with my vax and used ordinary vax carpet cleaner. Then did a couple of rises with just plain

water through the vax and every thing came up sparking.

I did it on a hot day and left the windows open as it takes a while to dry.

Very nice looking car by the way.

Thanks peter. Im very pleased to be back in a vrs. I love this car. It needs a good service and a bit of tlc but apart from that its wicked. And for the price i paid for it i cant complain. It does exactly what it says on the tin and then some. Happy days!!!

Hi guys and girls. Just a small update. Im taking my car over too a VAG specialist over at slough tomorrow. The place is called VRT and are audi/vw/seat/skoda specalist. They do a lot of custom work etc and I found the place over an internet search engine. Has anyone ever used them? They seem to be a good outfit and going by the website they seem to know their VAG group cars inside-out.

Another update. Went over to VRT tuning in Slough. I'm really impressed with the level of service they offered and attention to detail etc. I spent a good 20 mins from the man's hectic schedule to talk about upgrades etc and best ways of doing it all and I'm properly happy. I got a quote from them for the timing belt, water pump, thermostat, dampers and coolant change and have booked the car in for the 28th April. First of all though I need to do the service: wynns oil flush, oil, oil filter, k&n air panel filter, fuel filter and pollen filter, plugs and oil pick-up pipe change.

However the car has got another small issue. When I parked up outside my digs, I went to engage reverse gear and it took me a good 2 mins to get it and when it did the gear shift feels really tight and its really hard to engage. I know the car has had a new clutch, it was done by the man I bought it from as he gave me the paperwork. I will change the gearbox oil as part of the service too and I have found oil from eurocarparts. It's Triple QX75W90 5l semi-synthetic oil. Would this oil be the right stuff for the gearbox? Also I found a very useful guide and video on how to reset the gear-linkage via the forum and you-tube. Has anyone done this recently and does it actually work? I'm a bit wary of pulling the plastic clips with springs down and allowing the linkage teeth to open and the linkage cables go "ping". Is there anyone who could maybe advise me on this and if they have had similar issues etc? Also if it doesn't cure the issue are clutch slave cyliners ok to change?

Cheers folks

I did it not long ago. The little plastic lever thingy takes some patience and not too much force but it's easily doable. The first time I did it I lost fifth gear as I'd taken the ends off completely to change the bushings and must have misaligned something putting it back together but did it a second time and all good. You may find the sprung bit on the end near the claw needs some gentle persuasion if it's really old.

To be honest getting the air box etc out of the way took longer than doing the alignment itself but if you get stuck just come shout at us!

Can't help with the gear linkage - I've not had to touch mine.

As for the gearbox oil, the correct oil is cheap from the dealer and you can be sure it won't cause any problems so I would go with that.

advice is always appreciated mate. I will phone skoda for the correct gearbox oil later. Im always a bit weary of eurocarparts at times.

Right guys sorry for the delay yet again in keeping this thread up-to-date. Recently purchased a complete service kit and i had to change wishbones droplinks trackrod ends and lower ball joints and i had to get a garage to do it. It cost me over £300 and tbh i feel angry because i know i can do alot of this myself. problem is i dont have any tools or the money. My garage back home in scotland got broken into and ive lost over £1000 of tools. I am staying in london at the minute due to work but i travel back to scotland regularly hence the reason i cant get the tools to fix the car. So im looking for some assistance to completely service the car and as i found out from the mechanic i need to change the front sway bar and bushes. Bt im not paying those prices for the car to get repaired. Its broke me. Can anyone in the cricklewood/kilburn or NW london area help me out here? I will pay for the help but not stupid money.
