Timing Belt or Timing Chain on 2011 Superb Estate?

Am on the verge of buying a 2011 Skoda Superb Estate 2.0 Tdi CR Elegance (140).   I needed to know if it has a timing belt or timing chain and when this should be changed and how much they usually cost?  Hopefully I will use this in negotiation to bring the price down a little!

 

Anything else you want to comment on regarding this car I would love to hear.  Thanks.

Definitely BELT - had mine changed at a local specialist independent 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately it isn't possible to get a full "kit" for this engine (well, for mine at least) and each component must be bought separately. Also had the water pump and coolant replaced. £480.

In guessing that's a dealer price as I was £300 for full genuine kit supplied and fitted my local independent VAG specialist

Of  course it's dealer price - he's trying to use it to negotiate a price reduction off a new-to-him car.

 

You wouldn't use a cheap price from  a backstreet garage as a bargaining chip.   :rofl:

and remember a chain is not necessarily better than a belt....(09+ VW 1.4TSI tensioner problem)...

Have they improved the tensioner? Do you think it is worth getting it replaced if they have, just in case?

The chain manufacturer used a tool that was out of spec and the chain was the issue if I remember correctly. I'd be very surprised if the replacement chain was still faulty. Our local VW mechanic has seen a number of cars with well under 60,000 miles requiring major engine work due to this issue. One of the first signs is a noisy rattling engine on start up. If you have this get it to a competent mechanic ASAP. Here is the quote from a German website I found:

 

"A production error in the chain of suppliers to be the cause of the elongated and skipped timing chains at VW TSI engines, senior VW engineers told AUTO BILD in Wolfsburg. Volkswagen's engineer stated that the chain damage the 1.4 TSI were caused by "to accumulated manufacturing tolerances in the timing chain." More precisely, the supplier of the chain had his punching tools used across the wear limit, so that they were no longer accurate enough to punch the holes in the link plates and tiny burrs on steel remained. "Chips and burrs then ensured for abrasive wear entry,".

 

The result being the chain wear out prematurely. The case numbers were moving in the hundreds. Volkswagen have now optimized the production at the supplier. Since when the chains run flawlessly, VW did not reveal. In addition to this manufacturing problem the driving behaviour can be crucial, cars that had predominantly short journeys, are disproportionately affected by elongated timing chains."

 

VW in NZ would not admit to their being a problem so you are likely to get no confirmation from VW in the UK either.

I have a 2012 superb CDI estate 2.0 As soon as I bought it, (3 years old and 87,000 miles) I got my grandson (an M.O.T. inspector) to change the belt, water pump and all relevant tensioner pullies. He bought the whole lot as a complete kit for which he paid £108.00. I gave him a total of £250 for doing the job..

Got a phone call from the dealership I bought my superb from yesterday saying my cam belt is due in May as the car will be 5 years old. I asked them for a quote she said the belt would be £359.00 I said does that include the water pump and she said no that would be an extra £100.00. Today I rang a local vag specialist and he quoted me £320 for the belt and pump.

My SKODA Superb Elegance 3.6 V6 auto Reg. March 2011 has only done 22 thou. miles.

(Very elderly male driver).

Letter from Local SKODA agent suggests I have toothed drive belt replaced @£385 or belt and water pump @£485.

Any advice welcome.

ER - correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the Superb V6 has a cam chain and not a belt

Is yours the petrol v6 MK II? [EDIT just seen 3.6 V6 auto Reg. March 2011 above - so yes it is the petrol v6 mkII]

YES!

 

My point is, despite the 5 year age, should I wait until mileage is higher before having belt/water pump changed ?
