Rattling from underneath?

I noticed a week or two ago a slight rattling sound from underneath while going over bumps and uneven surfaces, and since then I feel like it has gotten slightly louder and more frequent. Have jacked the car up three times to try and find the culprit, but to no avail...

It is really hard to tell exactly where it is coming from, but it seems to be coming from the front, and more prone to sound from the right side. It is also not just when going over big bumps, if I drive on a cobble road there are slight "klonk-klon-klon-klonks". They aren't that loud either, running the fan on 5-6 will drown them out, the same goes with there stereo. But still. It is there, it shouldn't be there, I can't figure it out and it bugs the hell out of me!

Any ideas what this could be?

I had a rattling noise coming from underneath the car before. It translated into a rattle in the cabin and almost like the exhaust was loose. It actually turned out to be stone chips that became lodged in and around the under tray as the tray have slight openings. If you tap on the trays you will hear any trapped debris rattle around. Just an idea.....

Yes, first thought was that it sounded like the exhaust rattling. But I hoisted the car, removed the plastic belly pan, and the exhaust was rock solid and no rocks on the tray.

I would check the anti roll bar drop links first

Track rod ends? Had a similar problem on my previous Octavia and it turned out to be worn TRE's.

Thanks for the tips! Hard to diagnose these though. I've had the wheel removed and pulled/pushed/hit everything I could get to, and nothing moved an inch. But it seems most likely that it is something in that area...

Any ideas as to how to diagnose?

If I can't identify it by pulling/pushing/hitting I move to the large pry bar and start levering the components to see if anything gives itself away. I normally do this while there is weight on the suspension though over a pit. Things like the ARB links are easy enough to disconnect so you can have a proper feel of what the joints are like

"I feel like it has gotten slightly louder"

If you believe that it has BECOME slightly louder and possibly more frequent it may be that you have a broken strut spring.

This has become more common with so many speed humps and pot holes and can be difficult to see. I have had two go on a previous car and it was only a small piece at the top that could not fall away but would rattle when the wheels where off the ground.

There's along plastic under panel that runs under the car, then a small section with a lower section on just under the back door (drivers side am talking about) I caught this section pulling off my drive and was unable just to push it back into the long section so took it off to do it and found it had stones in it as well as the long section so maybe worth a look

I also had both my front top suspension mounts changed as I was getting a knocking sound but that was when on full lock changing direction or going over a camber after waiting at a junction, Norma driving you never heard it

Having struggled to find a very loud rattle on my mk2 superb, very similar to the one described in this forum, i thought id share the result (and fix) on here for other frustrated owners!

bought the car in summer 18 from evans halshaw milton keynes, and shortly afterwards discovered a metallic rattle under the car when on rough terrain.  not linked to speed or large bumps, became quite frustrating.

long story ensues - evans couldnt find it, so it went to Skoda Brentford.  they recommended a balljoint replacement.  had that done under EH warrantee, but no fix.  checked again, Skoda gave up.  had the car up on a ramp myself, isolated the heatshields, checked as many bushes as i could, drop links, trackrods, anti roll bars etc and again took it back to Skoda.  cut a long story short, a much cleverer mechanic than the last lot diagnosed loose-fitting aftermarket brake pad (N/S/F inward facing) Pagid pad.  blamed it on the pad.

took it to my local garage who played about with the backplate spring on the pad and fitted it back into the caliper more snugly and noise is fixed!!   very simple problem but caused 6 months of anguish and £200 of diagnosis charges.  EH have agreed to pay.

good luck anyone else who has a rattle - its a pain.
