Hello to all from snowy Finland,

I am doing a conversion on my AEE lump and need to get ignition working without injection system because a Dellorto DHLA carb conversion. How to proceed? I do not have wiring loom or any other electrical equipment than distributor with me, the engine was picked up without the rest of the car last autumn and its sitting neatly in my friends garage..

Does the original ignition and injection systems require some kind of communication between them or is it possible to use only ignition itself (maybe with other than original type of ignition module)?

You can fit the older type distributer unit from the carb golfs etc. Basically as long as it has the vac advance /retard unit on it , it should fit and work..

You will need the coil and amplifier too.

Sure i have an inlet manifold for twin 40's if your stuck too

Hi MotorsportFinland

I'm curious what are your expectations of that Felicia carb conversion? Will it have more HP than your Wartburg? :)

Thanks felicia16v, somehow I never even thought of that.. :wall: nor my friend, who has fixed about 50 different VW's over the years. I have to ask tomorrow him to look around for example a Golf 2 unit, I am sure he might have one sitting somewhere.

RicardoM, I am building this Project for a national competition class where injection system is not allowed. I am hoping to get around 110-130bhp, will it be optimistic or not, I do not know yet.. I received a spare AEE head this morning and going to dismantle it tomorrow to see how much larger valves can I fit in it with new seat rings. Seems that I am going to use BMW M20 valves and work them as the valve length is an issue. I did bought a set of stainless steel blank valves year ago to match std size valve seat OD, but my cylinder head technician strongly advised me to try get something much larger ones because most restriction in this head design is way too small inlet valve size. Then there also is a different thing with the bucket tappets and their hydraulics.. I did a huge job finding something useful from other makes and might try Subaru WRX or STi buckets since they are rather easy to find (my cylinder head technician is mostly a Subaru specialist) and might work with longer BMW valve stems and grinded cam. Nobody knows yet..

So this is not just a simple bolt on conversion..

I should add some pictures later on, so far only engine bottom end is nearly finished with the lightened clutch and ready to be bolted together with gearbox, just need to fix one double head bolt to adapter plate.

Looking forward to see the end result of the conversion. Dyno results and stuff. If you don't mind updating the topic as often as you can, this will be a great addition to Skoda Classic projects section.

Ok, ordered a new cheap chinese distributor yesterday and gone through a barn full of stuff to find suitable wiring loom to get connectors but no luck finding yet.

I am going to a machine shop next week to sort out what size of new seat rings can be fitted and after that I am able to start designing the porting..

I also noticed that the stainless steel exhaust manifold I bought is a bit offset.. so this has to be fixed when porting.

Spare head disassembled few hours ago and discovered that the inlet valves were nearly new. The guides seemed to be in good condition also, however this was not the case with exhausts, those guides need K-liners to survive..

It looks like the practical maximum inlet valve size could be 38mm and thats it. In this case the space for new seat ring will have to be cut very close to spark plug "slope" and space between seat rings will be about 1mm.

The BMW double springs fit relatively well, problem was encountered with interference between AEE valve stem seal and BMW inner spring. After removing seal this was better. Now I have to get the new valves and measure how much valve lift could be possible (when the springs bottom) while the old seat rings are still in head.

There wasn't too much to show at this time, I will take couple of photos after I get the new valves to show comparison of parts.

Also the new distributor might be here tomorrow so I will check and take a photo of it too.
