Picked up new car yesterday...bit of a drone between 55ish - 80ish mph

Recommended Posts

Morning All,

Picked up my new Superb Estate yesterday (2015) with only 7,500 on the clock. All is well apart from I noticed when on the motorway there is a been of a droning noise between 55ish - 80ish mph which then almost disappears around 85mph.

I kicked the DSG into manual mode and it isn't anything engine noise related, same with tyre noise as I could hear the different noise being made over different terrain.

Could it be wheel bearing...already though?!

May try and see if I can get a noise clip later today if it helps.

Many thanks

Almost certainly tyre noise I reckon. I'd be straight back to the dealer.

Thanks for this, going to give the car a good check over now it is on my driveway today. The sales guy is off today but he said he would be ringing me tomorrow so will wait for the call back.

When I took the car for a test drive on Friday I never took it on a motorway however got up to 60mpg on national road and never noticed any noise.

Why wait for the sales guy? He sold it.

Now it is the service department to deal with issues, the sooner you report it at least give them a call the better IMO then it is logged on the system straight away :)

I sell things everyday and say get hold of me but I always tell them to contact the helpdesk immediately as this will avoid delays with engineering issues.

I see your point! I will call up this morning and at least log it.

The garage is a 2 hour round trip so may see if my friend who owns a VAG specialist garage will give me a second opinion so I can go in with a bit more info.

Check the tyres to see if there is any uneven wear plus also look for any raised edges on the individual tread blocks, these if there will be all the way around the tyre probably near the outer area.

Do exactly this if it saves you a trip. What normally causes noise is the inside tread blocks get stepped, saw-toothed or feathered. You will be able to feel this with your hand. Usually the inside of the back tyres on cars with independent rear suspension.

Good luck.

It can be very subtle - rub your hand across the tyre tread clockwise and anticlockwise. If the tread blocks feel sharper while rubbing in one direction than the other you probably have the first signs of sawtoothing.

We had a similar issue when we got up to 70.  There was a drone from the front driverside.  We took it back to the dealer and they checked it out.  Turned out it was a bearing and they had to replace the whole hub assembly.

It does sound like you have some saw tooth/feathering issues there.  In fact, it sounds almost identical (same speeds) to an issue I had before and it was definitely saw toothing.  Hope you get it sorted and as the others have said above, it is not that obvious.  My dealer couldn't see any issues initially and I had to really push them

Both of my Mk2 Superbs suffered with this issue. It was made worse by the fact I always had a fully loaded boot. I never got the rears down to the wear markers, they were replaced much sooner than that due to premature wear on the inside shoulders or general sawtoothing. The downside of independent rear suspension.

Hi All,

Called the dealer however still waiting for a call back so will be phoning again today.

I checked the tyres and all seem like new to be honest, my bet would be a bearing. When driving over different surfaces the sound is no different, I would expect it would be slightly different pitch/tone if it was the tyres making a noise?

Mine does it... silent until you reach around 50-55 MPH then you can hear a "droaning" noise .. Not loud but you can hear it...

Mine is a 2015 with 11500 miles on the clock, I suspect tyre noise as my old Leon in 2006/7 started with this at around 6500 miles with Bridgestone tyres, new Continental tyres cured it

I would suspect a bearing may be evident all the time not just start at a certain speed...

Dealer could already be on "holiday mode"

Get the (possible) defect noted on their system via email or letter and state you are aware of the new sales of goods act and you are considering returning the car.

I would in email ask them is it safe to drive with the defect and if doing so will it effect a future warranty claim.

Good luck.

Hi All,

Thanks very much for the input so far...this is still an ongoing issue!

Yesterday in fact was my last visit to the dealer which I popped in when I was heading back home from London to have 2 rear tyres fitted...in total all 4 tyres have been changed now.

The noise still appears between 60 and 80mph!

I have emailed the Service manager this morning as I am going to be keeping everything to email for the record, requesting they come and collect the car and drop off a courtesy car and keep the car until the issue is fixed 100%. I have made 3 round trips which takes 3 hours out of my day each time so just not acceptable any more.

They are yet to change any of the bearings which they have been reluctant to do due to the low miles but I just want the car sorted! Since getting the car already done around 3,500 and apart from the noise I do love the car.

The saga continues!

Oh dear.

Welcome to my world of being driven around the bend by a seemingly mystery fault.

I'm just a bit shocked that the op has gone to the massive expense of trying to solve the problem for himself tbh....£6-800 or thereabouts, and the problem is still there?

Time the dealer sorted this once and for all or take the car back with at least a full refund

Any update on this issue?

I have a 2009 Skoda superb auto deisel

I've recently bought the car an I'm getting the same problem. I went to a local garage who said its the wheel bearing or gear box so I went for the cheapest option an had the wheel bearing an hub replaced. Unfortunately this hasn't made any difference but after reading other forums a few others have said they had the wheel bearing and hub changed from the dealers or had genuine parts put in an it's fixed the problem.

Has any one else been able to resolve this issue?
