S3 Xenon lamp replacement guide

Great guide! Any info on the standard bulbs? On my S3 L&K they look way too yellow than any other xenon i had before :/

As the OP was fitting Philips bulbs, the original were probably Osram 66340HBI which are shown in the pictures.

Google suggests they are rated at 4650k and typically used by OEM's as stock bulbs.

Yea i had to find me a computer to see the pics better.

I doubt i have 4650k bulbs i mine... my octy has 4300k and they are much whiter, but i will check this when i get home =)

Thanks!

Anyone think changing to "better" bulbs will interfere with the smart light assist and so on? Since xtreme vision (for example) has a longer range than standard bulbs

The OEM lamps are supposedly rated at 4650K but I don't know if there's a tolerance in that quoted figure ie +-500K or something. I wasn't overly impressed by the lamps that came with the car. This could in part be due to my old car running Osram Xenarc CBI lamps.

The Philips Xtreme Vision lamps I fitted are rated at 4800K and are already a noticeable improvement. As they've burnt in they've been getting better and better.

I have noticed no problems with the smart light assist and haven't been flashed by anyone.

As long as the lamps are E marked, their design can't deviate that much - if at all - from the OEM lamps. Side by side I noticed no differences between the new and old lamps.

Also, the arc is only about 5mm long so the lamps have to be built to pretty tight tolerances.

I've just attempted to change the bulbs on mine and NO CHANCE!  Even on the drivers side where there's a tad more room I just can't fit my hand in to the area where the bulbs are situated.  I'll have a look tomorrow at how the light cluster can be removed; I had a quick scan and it looks like 3-4 torx screws.

I tried to get to mine too, I have too big hands to get to it. So I bought Workshop manual which states the following:

Not sure I'm allowed to share pages from Workshop manual though, please if anyone knows about that let me know and I will remove the content and type it down my self ^^.

I replaced my Xenon lamps today with 6K Chinese which look awesome. Any how, what I wanted to share on right side of car (in Slovenia Passanger side) I was able to reach bulb, remove it and put new one in without removing wheelhouse liner. On left side (Drive side) however there was no space. It took about 3 hours to replace both lamps. I did however take it very slow and with caution.

I wanted LED but for that bumper removal is required and Im scared to do that. I took these: https://m.aliexpress.com/item/32797032955.html. Very good packaging, good quality bulbs about 16€

They look very nice but I forgot to mention so far the lumens output is not great. Its like 2500lm instead of 3200 (totally out of my head). However I will give them 50h to burn in, just in case it may cause so big difference. So if staying with Xenon I'd have to buy Philips or Osram. But that costs 120€+

I still want led, something like: https://m.aliexpress.com/item/32852368516.html

Your fogs look nice. I bought Osram H8 with "white" effect. So I'd keep slow fade. But might change those too... for 6K led.

I spent a long and painful afternoon trying to replace my bulbs. Trying to apply enough torque to rotate the bulb assembly to remove it was very difficult given the lack of space and the extreme angle you have to put your hand in at. I got the driver's side (UK) assembly to what felt like 10 o'clock from the starting vertical position, but I couldn't rotate it further or remove it at that degree of rotation. Rotating it was very stiff.

A poster above noted that the factory manual recommends removing the front wheelarch liners. Has anyone done this? How difficult/long a process is it?

The only way I think I could get in and rotate the housings enough would be by using some kind of slip joint pliers and gently clasping and rotating the housings that way. Even then I think I'd struggle to find a tool that has enough bend to make it possible.....help?!

Thanks guys.

Its not that difficult but it did take me about 20 minutes. There are a lot of screws. Its not hard though and its pretty easy to put back together. You can even do it without jacking up car

I recently swapped my headlights, which meant removing the wheel arch liners and front bumper.

Removing the wheel arches was easier with the wheels off.  U get much easier access.

There a whole bunch of screws inside the wheel arch.

There is a couple by the front bumper.

It's not hard, just tedious.

I had to transfer the xenons from one set to another, and I found it tricky removing the d3s globe even with the headlights off the car!!!

It should also b noted, that SLA xenon headlights (version "B") uses a Ring Adaptor to hold the globe to the projector housing, while the normal xenon headlights use a retaining clip to hold the globe in place.

Both very different designs, and hence different method in removing and installing.

See the image below.

The top image shows the normal xenon version - u squeeze the pins and slide each pin out and up. Globe pulls out after being loosened.

The bottom two images shows the SLA version. U twist the ring adaptor first, then pull out with the globe.

Did you have to remove arches for the bumper? Asking cause I'm thinking to try out replacing D3S with LED in future

Yup.

U can't remove the bumper without removing the wheel arches.

Likewise, u can't remove the headlights without removing the bumper.

Do you have the part number to hand of the round headlight bulb cover?

Also how easy would it be to take the power from the OE ballast (to power an LED bulb)

I’m thinking the round bulb cover is going to need to be modified (a ‘power bulge’ to clear the LED fan) which shouldn’t be much of a problem, but I don’t want to cut any OE wiring looms so everything can be returned back to std if needs be.

Part number of the cover is 3V0 941 607.

Whilst there isn't much room between the d3s base and the plastic cover, wat would b more of a worry is that they r positioned off centre inside the headlight housing unit.

Me thinks some sort of modification if u going to need to place an LED driver with a fan.

Non-SLA version (A)

As for power ballast, I don't know.

I simply removed the power/ballast module from my version A headlights to the version B headlights.

Ah bugger I didn’t realise they were offset!

Don’t suppose you have a photo square on to the opening so I can see how far offset they are?

Does the ballast plug into that white plug hanging outside where the ballast sits?

I'll take a pic after work today.

Yes, that's where the ballast goes.

Here is a pic of it on.

Ok. I got my nice new osram bulbs yesterday. Had a look at my headlights they are type A with the circular clip I was afraid to open the clip as I thought I would end up with bulb and clip loose inside the headlight unit with little chance of everything going back together.. Toyota avensis H7 springs to mind!! However closer inspection of the fantastic photos shows that the clip stays in the housing and the bulb should just slide out ( no turning etc), am I correct in assuming this? I just don't want to break anything.

So u have Version B headlights with the green circular retaining clip?

If so, the green clip comes out with the D3S bulb. U must twist (green clip with bulb together) slightly, then unclip to release n pull out.

The reverse to put it back in.  It's a PITA to put it back though cause placement needs to b precise, otherwise the green retaining clip won't close/hold.

Or do u have Version A with the white circular look and metal spring clips?

If so, squeeze the metal pins together, and simply pull the D3S bulb out.

Good luck.

I have version A with the circular clip. I had another look today, space is very tight so I chickened out again. I think I’ll drop the liner down which would give a lot more room. Such a shame the didn’t use the old Octavia system of sliding the headlight out. Third time lucky...

Had another bash at it today,NADA!! I cannot for the life of me get any of those round ear things on the end of the circlip to budge. Good job I'm not on the side of the road!! Think I'll have to concede defeat on this one and see can I get the local dealer to do it for me. Very very frustrating it's the only car I've ever owned that I couldn't change a headlight bulb in.
