Electrical Issue in 2003 Fabia

Recommended Posts

I have an '03 plate 1.9 diesel estate Fabia,

both the Radio and Cigarette Lighter (which I use for sat-nav charging) are not working.

The Radio has worked intermittently for the last year, hasn't worked at all for the last 4 months.

And the last time I used the lighter was 4/5 months ago, only noticed an issue recently due to needing the SatNav.

I have changed both the fuses, they still do not work,

Has anyone experienced anything similar/ have any advice?

Much Appreciated.

No experience with this . . . yet.

Electrics

Link fuse (In the battery case) cracked ? You'll need a magnifier.  I had one of these (F2 - 110A) go recently on my '03 16v Fab but the symptom was straightforward as  the vehicle wouldn't start. Fuse F2 serves virtually every circuit in the Fab.  Perhaps its starting to break and only manifests with the low draw devices ?

Haynes manual shows there are two fuses in line for both the cigarette lighter and radio - as said, the heavy duty link fuse in the battery cover to (F2 110A) is common to both the cigarette lighter and the radio and then there's F42 -15 Amp for the cigarette lighter socket and F45 - 20 Amp for the radio, which you've already replaced.

Have you checked with a multimeter that there's power up to the secondary fuses ? And beyond ?

Have you checked the earthing point ? Current flow diagram in the Haynes manual  shows that the cigarette lighter and radio share the same chassis earthing point, E3, under the centre console, in front of the gearstick. That said, that earthing point is also shared by the horn, heater/blower, headlights, indicators, fog lamps, interior lighting, wash-wipe,instrument cluster, central locking, heated rear window and ABS/TCS.

Current flow diagrams show that the electrical system control unit (Item 10, Line 6c/2, grey/blue wire) is a connection unique to the circuits attached to the cigarette lighter,  audio system, heated rear window and ABS/TCS. Are the rear window heater and ABS also playing-up ?

Of course, there's the possibility that both the cigarette lighter and radio components have developed faults. Have you tried testing them on an independent supply ?

Software

Other alternatives are the EMU. Some cars  can be set up so that the power to items such as the radio and cigarette lighter can be turned-off (In software) when the ignition key is removed.

Sorry I can't be definitive.
