Cracked Windscreen Replacement Cost?

Recommended Posts

Drove to work all fine, get back into car this evening to leave work and there is a frigging crack at bottom of windscreen with no impact damage anywhere near it :( Not even a single stone chip in my 15 year old big window gurrrrrrrr. I suspect it has happened in relation to me changing the pollen filter 4 or 5 days ago and removing/refitting scuttle panel, but FML I haven't punched out a windscreen in years only had to tap it with palm firmly to get each catch to pop back in. Not totally sold on that being how, but it appears to come from bottom heading directly up.

Anyone know how much a replacement windscreen costs? I have tried looking around online, but windscreen companies appear to be a very secretive shower of absolute ankers with regards to giving me a frigging price!  I do not like insurance companies classing it as a claim at my next 5 renewals for both cars and even the bike...

My insurance has had them declared as an accidental windscreen damage claim,

but no affect on premium on the Policy for that vehicle on renewal.  More than one claim, actually several for the same vehicle over the years.

Hypothetical quotes show a premium change. Dr Google seems to confirm this for some years with most companies essentially reclaiming the cost and then some over the following few years. Even people having chips repaired getting small amounts added to recover cost X2 generally by the looks of it). All of course say 'does not affect NCD' and have their own separate excess, but can't see any insurance company realistically saying 'the rest is totally on us FUB's, we won't charge you a penny more for it, honest!).

I had National Windscreens replace my Fabia windscreen last year for £165 all-in. Might help as a guide.

Fabia had been the one I was keeping an eye on as it's seen a lot more action than the Octavia one which apart from this is like brand new. Fabia one has lots of little marks but no actual chips (perhaps a low quality replacement sometime in it's life). In the past I used to have a rule, tyres need changed = sell it, windscreen needs changes = sell it. Worked for over 20 cars. But I am fond of my Octy and it's only got 58K miles on it now.... I'd happily change the clutch and DMF on it if it needed it as it has so much life left in it with no pesky crap like DPF to have looming over me. Peeked into EGR the other week as I was going to clean it out for something to do and it was more or less clean after 15 years or basically no motorway miles.

Crack is (from inside view) bottom left of windscreen about 20cm from corner coming up from bottom about 10cm. It's not within the sweep pattern of the wipers and I think MOT for passenger non line of sight etc is 40mm within the sweep area? It's only going to head one way, but might be an idea to MOT the car again ASAP :D Not due until Sept, but might give me time to stew a bit more on it.

I was not only saying no affect on NCB,  but no rise in premium,

but a Google might throw up the answer from others that, my premium never dropped as much as it might of.

When I do hypotheticals here it's loading the premium adding a claim as a glass one :( I have 3 vehicles on cover and when I have to declare it on them all, it would turn into a absolute joke is the fear.

I have a few more than 3 vehicles, and insurance with several underwriters.

Declaring Speeding Points / Fines is expensive, as they can be added as informed or on renewal.

I try not to get caught speeding, by trying not to speed.

I just give insurance companies money and never get anything back from the sods Hypothetical quote for OCty on it's own just came back on a well known comparison site at £320 fully comp...... WTF insurance seems to be high at moment my vRS only cost £165 fully comp ffs! Oh the fear of my pending wave of renewals later in the year is setting in now LOL no points no accident's no claims etc Just take my money biatches :( £320!!! Are they on crack? I paid less for my first vRS 9 years ago! The Octy is 15 years old bog standard OAP spec Normally quotes are just under £200 on that site for me for that car (windscreen claim listed added £37 on top of that again) but FML £320  :o

Do you ever try the same Comparison Sites in the middle of the night / early morning when a Company wants sales and in the top lines and might do silly prices.

Not maybe a Bank Holiday Monday when they are getting plenty new customers.

Oh when it comes to renewal time I play those sites well :D It's just shocking to see a double price one being lowest on off set! Online is only where my premium begins, there is always lots more to be had by haggling on the phone :D It's such a lot of faff these days though, no one throws a fair price at you first go anywhere! Bike insurance is a joke too for me at moment, I think they took about £140 off me for my old 636! My second insurance policy ridding the same bike a good few years and bikes ago now was £85 just as a renewal price before shopping around :( At the time I was amazed thinking how can it be so cheap when a bike is statistically more likely to be involved in a claim and I only have 1 years NCD. But then again the policy then was cheapest by price and today I shop more for level of cover and extras with as little poor reputation factor as I can find.

TBH I just don't think I should have to pay insurance on each vehicle, our insurance system is crap. I loved it in Holland where I insured the car and anyone with any EU licence was covered fully comp with all the bells and whistles and no stupid games reputation in the event of claims etc (fast helpful no games, I saw people getting all sorted from minor bumps to fully write off's money in their account within days). Bike cost a lot to insure there though :o massive bike theft crime sadly and think I paid about €700 a year and could only get cover with an assortment of approved locks which cost about €500 (which few insurers here seem to recognise)

Would some smaller wipers avoid crack to get it through an mot?

As it comes from bottom up.... I had already thought of just adjusting the wiper to park slightly higher lol Regardless though it will need replaced, just not thrilled about the prospect one little bit.

I need mine done and was quoted £140 locally (national windscreens I think). My insurance company (Swintons - Premier really) say it will pay £60 so I figured I might as well pay all of it TBH.

As an aside my insurance renewal with Swintons went up to £450!!! Went online and now going with Admiral for £164. Swintons can't get anywhere near it - even online!!!!!

How crazy is that!

2016 prices for anyone stumbling upon this thread in the future for the Mk1 Octy came back at:

Autoglass £317 fitted

National Windscreens £156 fitted

Thought it should stay fairly static for a while with temp not being too bad etc, until a couple of nights ago :o

Don't you guys have windscreen cover with your insurance? I've had to replace about 3 over my time and cost me no more than £75. Insurance pays the rest, no effect on insurance premiums. I know some guy complained about it pushing up prices but then again he was a windscreen repairer so I told him to op it. It's there for a reason and I pay it, there for I'm going to use the service. Most the time autoglass came out and chucked a new one in.

I've had my Octavia 1  4x4 turbo hatch since 2002 and done 203,000 in it. It is also wearing its 4th windscreen.  I have long had the impression that the replacement screens come from 3rd party suppliers rather than the vehicle manufacturer's suppliers. As the insurance companies direct you to preferred replacement companies, I have assumed that they have bulk purchase deals going that probably mean the excess paid for windscreen replacement pretty much covers the cost of the job.
