Thinking of upgrading to a Superb 2

Recommended Posts

So, I currently own a 10 year old Octavia, and whilst it is still running fine, and I have the ability to go buy something a bit newer and shinier...

I've spotted a very late FL Superb Mk2 2.0TDI CR140 DSG SE for 15K (it's a 15 plate)

It has done less than 14K miles and to me it seems to represent a jolly decent amount of car for the money.

However, I appreciate that the Superb will probably be slightly slower than my current car (also a 2.0 PD DSG) but my big worry is the DPF.

I only drive 7K miles a year these days and it gets on a motorway regularly about once a fortnight. Is this enough for a DPF? I had a vRS Diesel once but I was regularly (daily) up and down the motorway but I've got a new job closer to home since then.

I am certainly not in a rush, but car tax is due July, service and gearbox service due August, and I think I would really prefer a 1.8TSI or even a 2.0TSI (DSG) if I can find one. It's that or an Octavia Mk3, so by July I want this one gone.

(Or there's a 3.6V6 down the road for less than 10K...............)

I worry about the DPF and I do 10-12k per year but because I go on the motorway every day I think I'm alright. At 7k a year you really don't 'need' a diesel. I know petrol versions can be harder to find these days though.

If you pop down the road could you please have a quick look at the 3.6 V6 Superb. General body work, bents, dings, tyres and the condition of the Inside, drivers seat etc.

Thanks in Advance

The 3.6 is hopefully one I will test. For under 10K it's a whole load of car. Less than 30K on the clock although it is a 10 plate, I think the miles are more important, i.e. low miles on an older car. I bought my current one as a 5 year old in 2011 with 38K on it and she has served me well, but it is time.

I swapped from a 2005 Elegance Octavia 1.9 to a 2011 CR170 Superb a little over 2 years back. The refinement, comfort, spec, space and performance improvement is huge with no obvious change in economy, but the Superb has been much less reliable than the Octavia was - in 2 years I've had the water pump leak and driver's window regulator fail (Covered under warranty from the garage, so it was a free timing belt change, but the car was off the road for a couple of days), as well as part of the back light in the speedometer fail, the driver's seat heater, rear bump stops, GPS antenna and the clutch slave cylinder (Which is a gearbox off job and effectively put the car off the road for 2 weeks as it happened in January and the garage had to fit my unscheduled repair around preparing all the new cars they were getting in).

This was all the more frustrating because I changed car to reduce the likelihood of being stranded like this... In the 5+ years I had the Octavia before that it needed a couple of CV boots and ball joints (During scheduled services) and the rear washer pipe leaked (Which looked like some weird ECU failure as the fluid landed on an earthing point in the boot and set every warning light on the dashboard off, but was repaired by soaking up the leaked fluid with 2 or 3 sheets of kitchen paper after it was diagnosed on this forum and the car still drove fine). The aircon evaporator developed a leak a year before I sold it and the parking sensors only ever worked when it was hot and dry, but none of these faults left me stranded without a working car.

I don't think I could go back to the Octavia now that I'm used to the power and refinement of the Superb though - it still puts a smile on my face every time I get it out on the open road... Expect to spend a bit of time chasing annoying trim rattles in the Superb that you'd never have heard over the PD engine too...

It is a similar tale with my current car. I've replaced wishbone joints, and a failed brake calliper outside of normal servicing and that has been about it. But I do have quite a list of gripes.

* I am convinced there is a cricket in the back of the car (It's a bit squeaky now)

* The boot is leaking - seal needs replacing

* The glovebox has never closed properly - i.e. within 5 seconds of closing it opens again and needs a good few attempts for the thing to stay closed

* The aircon needs gassing but I've been too lazy to get it fixed

* Over speed bumps it shows up some other part of the suspension being creaky

Other than the brake calliper failure (That was an expensive week - I'd literally had new disks and pads on the rear like 2 days ago - they were ruined) I can't say I have been disappointed with it, but I'd rather get rid of it now while it is OK.

Insurance is up next month

Tax is up July

Servicing (600 bill) will be coming in August

So I'd might as well divert that 800 pounds towards a new car.

I am stuck between that new Superb Mk2 or a Octavia Mk3 though, but I can't find an Elegance DSG Octavia (I like my high trim levels) - and the Superb I keep looking at online is a 140 CR, so I wonder if maybe I'd see a big difference and be disappointed with the power, but again, can't find a decent automatic 170 very close either.

Buying a used car is a pain in the bum I haven't missed at all :)

Going to a common rail after driving a PD engine is a huge change - almost like going back to petrol engines except with less engine braking and a slower throttle response (Than some petrol engines anyway, a BMW 116i I tried a while ago had a slower throttle response than any non-Land Rover diesel I've driven). CR engines rev a lot more freely and give power smoothly across the rev range rather than throwing all the power and torque down in one go around 2000 rpm. I liked the driving character of the PD105 engine I had as it grumbled nicely while pushing on and never gave a spot of trouble, but the smooth effortless power from the CR engines (Except for the 1.6, which stops being so effortless over 50 mph) makes for much more relaxed driving.

I wouldn't worry about traveling if you find the right car at the end of the trip. I went from Limerick to Chesterfield to get my CR170 :)

I am sure travelling will be no problem at all. I'm fairly sure I might be going Octavia Mk3 but no decisions yet, I'm going to go and test drive and have a look at a few cars shortly :)

I always wanted the 170 but got a 140.

Regards the 140 and 170 engines I was on a V/W site cant remember which but it showed you the torque curves  of both engines and it was only after about 4000 that the 170 took over.

Very seldom will I take it over 4000

This got me thinking to test driving both back to back and guess what couldn't tell the difference :D . The cr140  is very capable even in combi and 4x4 version..

And I can always get it remapped

I just wish I was getting your fuel MPG

Ran first time with BP Ultimate now running with BP standard with Millers :sun:

The Millers made a big improvement with my C Class

I've used millers with standard diesel for the first 18 months of having the car (June 2014 till end of last year) Then seeing as fuel has been so cheap i've been using BP Ultimate or Shell V-Power diesel since my last bottle of Millers ran out. MPG seems to be roughly the same so i'll probably stick as i am till fuel shoots back up and it works out a lot cheaper to use the Millers again. Just easier too not having to get it out of the boot before filling from the pump etc....

Also bear in mind that my commute is just under 25 miles each way of which around 22 miles is motorway and i work 12hr days / nights which start or finish at 0600 / 0700 and 1800 / 1900 so usually nice clear runs which helps the fuel economy. (I usually get high 50's / low 60's mpg going to work and low 50's mpg coming home).

Millers OK with DPF's?

Must admit I never used it on my Superb I 1.9PD

Millers say it is for use in cars with or without DPFs. Hasn't caused issues with mine.

I think what I ought to do is get my car sold, then I am free to go wherever and not worry about part-ex.

That might be an idea. I do like the idea of the road trip!

So I thought I should reply to this topic.

I did some serious thinking and decided that buying an Octavia 3 that I intended was a bit daft because I could have ended up spending a lot more than I really needed to.

I have now bought: - (Because I have wanted a Superb for years and a big comfy car is a much better idea)

2011 11 Skoda Superb Mk2 1.8TSI Elegance DSG in Red. 15K on the clock! I was a lucky boy today. It's only 400 miles away too... :D

Estate or Twindoor?

The Columbus is a good head-unit, it can store app 18 Gb of music on it's own HD, play DVD's, (also play music on MP3 encoded DVD-R's), can accept a 32 Gb SD card, & paly normal CD's!

If the 1.8 TSi isn't quick enough for you it can be remapped, but it's a sweet unit in a Superb.

It's a Twindoor. I am very pleased about the Columbus, one of the reasons I decided to go for a luxobarge. ALL THOSE TOYS.

The 1.8TSI is a full second and a half quicker to 60 than my Octavia, so it will be fine. Plus it'll be nice and refined and quiet. I am really very excited.

1.8tsi Twindoor should be an extremely refined but powerful car - economy should be reasonable on the move

I've only got the 1.4 tsi - that was the only way I could buy a nearly new car within my Yorkshire budget
