Driving in Europe

So on Saturday I'm driving down to worthersee for the massive car show. I've been looking at doing the lights and done a quick search about the projector lights and what I've read there is a small lever behind the rubber cover but I can't find any pictures of this and had a quick look on mine between the bloody winter weather.

Any help or info would be great

You don't have to remove the bulb, just the rubber boot covering the bulb. I can't for the life of me remember which side of the bulb it's on but it's either at the 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock position. The lever is extremely thin and can be stiff to move. Sorry, I have never been able to get a picture of the lever.

I have the advantage of running standard lights that are that sh!te at lighting up the verge on roads in the UK when on Dip that no driver on the other side om Mainland Europe will ever be dazzled when on dip.

'Daytime / Daylight running lights'  actual SIDELIGHTS on with Dipped headlights in the UK gets flashed plenty though.

Couldn't find the leaver on my Greenline II (yes it's got Projector bulbs) so I bought the Sticker things (which had a magnetic GB for my bootlid!)! Never had anyone flash me to say I was dazzling them!! 

 

Stuck them on when on the train going over, pulled them off on the train home (I've a bottle of screen wash I used to remove the sticky residue!) Jobs a Good-un!! :)

You can do it before hand. My car went through 2 MOTs with the lights adapted as the "flick up" isn't a requirement and doesn't affect light output all that much.

As above, remember it just "flattens" the beam, ie cuts off the part pointing across to the left!

 

I worried about this a lot when going to pick up my new B8 Passat in NL back in May/June 2000, VW were of no help, referred me to local VW dealer who asked VW and got no reply! (car had factory fit HIDs) - so I seem to remember stopping in Belgium when it started to rain and applied lots of black insulating tape - that seemed to work as I did not get stopped by Police. When going on holiday to Europe two months later, I bought and prepared a couple of sets of Lucas beam "covers" - not right for that car, but I made sure that they did the job and made it look like I was trying to be legal and safe!  Years later I discovered a thread on a VAG forum pointing out a couple of small and well hidden levers - you would never reach them when wound up over needing to do that on the boat/train on the way out and back.

 

In short, buy a set of beam covers/convertors (or black insulating tape) and make sure they cover at least all the LHS pointing part of the low beam - then get them off as soon as you get home to avoid them marking the plastic light covers.

 

Edit:- my wife's sister and husband live in Kent and frequently travel in France - they know nothing about cars and I'd doubt if they ever change the lights on their cars - which I'm sure will have tourist function, like wise many other UK based folk and mainland EU folk coming over here - that does not make it right though!  Like you guys I'd always plan to make my lights "okay" when abroad.

Mine are black pack 2013 monte and the lever was there. If you find it ,are sure you remember the original position of the lever, I didn't and took me ages to figure out cos I had been playing about with it.

I had a 62 plate vrs fabia and it had the levers inside the lights just to the side of where the bulb holder was, took a good 5 mins to find it and actually got it to move, did 5k miles last oct with the lights on all the time and didnt get flashed once

Thanks to this thread I found the little levers to adjust the lights today. Will be very handy for my mammoth Euro road trip next month :) I have the black pack lights with standard projectors.

 Its actually a really easy couple of minute job once you know where the levers are located. It would be fine to quickly do on the ferry/train as you head to Euroland. The drivers side is a piece of p*ss because you have plenty of room, but the passenger side is a little trickier as the battery gets in the way and the lever is behind some wires. Anyway I took some pictures inside the lights to help me find the levers. I have attached them in case its of any help to anyone.

Great photos homesqueeze, clearest ones yet I'd say.

I agree, once you know where they are it's no drama doing them on a ferry or even in the queue waiting to board.

Probably an idea to disconnect the plug from the bulb on the nearside to expose the lever further.

Much better than faffing with beam adapter stickers. I'm sure that taking those on and off is what kicked off the clouding on my Golf headlights.

Probably is. Might of removed the protective uv layer on the lamp when you took them off?

The levers are worth doing arent they! Unless you're only going for a few days and not really driving at night.

I've ridden abroad on bikes and not really had much choice but to not worry about it. Never got flashed or indeed ever thought i was dazzling somebody though.

Yeah, I think it lost some of the UV coating and spread from there.

I rarely drive at night when im away and it barely gets dark at night as I'm there in summer anyway. The only thing is the countries I'm in require dipped headlights on permanently. I don't want to risk annoying the locals :D
