Fuel gauge - how low dare you go?

Recommended Posts

Hey peeps

Covered 610 miles in my 170 CR and needle is literally one mark above empty. Talk about being in the Red!!

Not posting this for bragging rights but I'm pretty impressed with that. I don't exactly have a heavy foot but the milage covered does include some rather spirited runs including a recent one around bala lake.

What are people getting these days from their dervs and how low are you leaving the tell tale needle before re fuelling?

My trip computer says 25 miles left and pinged at 555 miles. I need to drive very carefully tomorrow and find the nearest forecourt for Shell V Poweeeeeeeerrrrr!!

Fill  it and see how many litres you get in then compare with total of fuel tank..
You might be surprised

The Superb II has a 60 Ltr tank but I can only get about 55ltrs in on any refill meaning there is still 5 ltrs after the red and 0 miles left on MFD :peek:

Got 56.x litres into my 55 litre tank a few times. I always do brim to brim analysis.

Usually I refill when there's ~1/4 left - I like that habit and I always fill until the tank is full (mostly I do fuel consumption calculation also, just in case).

I remember one time when I had not much left but I skipped the nearest petrol station and hoped to reach the next one. Section between these two was rather long and I had to drive some time with 0 on the display :)

Actually it's not recommended driving like that. It's not healthy for fuel pump and that's an expensive thing...

If by running low on fuel you mean there is foreign matter entering the fuel system and damaging components...

What do you think the fuel FILTER is for!

The fuel feed is taken from the bottom of the fuel tank so any water/particulates would be down there anyway regardless of fuel quantity.

Driven on zero range for 25 miles on congested motorway. [emoji51]

Hats off to you! Presumably by accident?

A few times I've driven for a fair way when showing 0, maybe 20ish miles and not on a motorway. Also not entirely deliberately.

It normally tells me my range is about 600, give or take and I tend to try and fill up when it goes below a 1/4 the next time I'm near a garage. Unless I have a supermarket money off voucher, then I leave it as long as possible to get the most money off. There are some habits that my dad passed onto me that I just can't shake off :)

It's become a bit of a habit me doing that.

I try and gauge if I can do the 196 miles return to work on the tank. I know if it says 250miles range I can do it. Traffic and the speed i do have a habit of eating into it. Also I only fill at Shell and it's just off the motorway on my way home.

PS I have got 721 miles from a tank once and that took 56.29 litres to fill. 58mpg by my calcs. Happy with that and the Octy does 55-61 mpg. Mostly mid to high 50's at 75-89mph with some 50 roadworks is my daily drive.

Maybe it's air that's causing the problems but I'm not sure. I've heard this more then once. There have been a few stories about people visiting garage and the fault was always fuel pump and after some talking it was clear that they all had the same habit - driving with fuel amount next to nothing.

The best I've ever managed was 709.4 miles on a tank full and that took 50.65 litres to refill and my calculated mpg was 63.6 whilst computer said said mpg was 71.4 ... that was a drive down to Rochdale from Motherwell and back with only me in the car and cruise control set to 50mph ... several days motorway driving in and out of work when I got home from trip.

The worst I've managed on a full tank is 545.1 miles

My best from a tank was 705 miles and I had to put if 55.6 litres (60 litre tank in the Scout I believe) and gave 57.6mpg. However I have managed 61.5mpg from a 623 mile tank with a fill of 46.05 litres.

I did once manage to put 58.7 litres in after driving for around 40 miles with a 0 range, so could probably still have done another 10 miles or so.

I seem to average around 50 mpg in my 57 plate 1.9TDI. I can get much better on long motorway journeys but I do lots of around town driving which generally brings it down quite a bit. I've had high 50s on jaunts down to Cornwall, but the Bristol traffic usually ruins that!

I'll always fill up at about a quarter tank if I can, don't want to be sucking the crap from the bottom of the tank into the engine.

Think the most I got from the TFSI was 440mi and it still had a bit to go.

I use an iOS app called MPGCalc which allows me to enter various details and it auto-calculates the MPG for me ...

Filled up yesterday, with the trip computer showing 55 miles left on the tank .... here's the calculation

I'm happy with that ... it's probably not 100% accurate, but the Octavia is used mainly for a 20 mile daily commute, at varying times.

That's a pretty good app mate. Wonder if there's a similar thing for Android. Can't remember the name of the site I used last time but my brim to brim calc appeared to be out. Perhaps I inputted the data wrong.

Funny thing that people on here mentioning miles covered a lot higher than me. I refueled at 625 miles with trip 'showing' 5 miles left. I wonder how much beyond zero range I could go. Doubt I'd touch 700 odd miles.

Any thoughts?

Great app, unfortunately not available on Android! My return to iphone is coming though :)

I am a wimp    I never dare let it get into the red.  Last year I managed 440 miles down into France before Mr scaredy cat could stand it no longer.  Not bad for a big 200hp petrol turbo engine though, I remember I only managed to get about 48 litres in which slightly annoyed me for some reason.  :notme:   This is nothing to when I picked the car up for the first time, the dealer had left 2 litres in the tank !  Luckily there was light traffic and I managed to get to a local supermarket to fill her up before the 130 mile trip home.
