Diesel Sidelight bulb change - HOW?

Recommended Posts

The Off Side side light on my 58 plate Fabia 2 has failed
I looked in the handbook (which isn't much help) but cant see any way for access into this area without taking the headlight out?

Any ideas? There is no access from under the wing as the fuel filter is in the way.

If you find a way then please let me know. I gave up after lots of swearing.

Some people grab the wires and pull on them, as the side light bulb does not 'twist' like the main beam bulbs. However, be wary of damaging the wires...

They are very tricky and quite tight if never removed before!

I used a tool pick set off eBay to do mine. A set of picks that look like bent screwdrivers. Take care not to cut the wiring though as they can be sharp! Use the pick that is the best angle for the job, gently insert alongside the bulb holder and prise it off a bit at a time. That are a tight push fit. Try not to cut the wiring though as they can be sharp! (Thats not a typo, just re-iterating a valid piece of advice)! Small hands help as a bunch of bananas will be difficult to get access to such a small opening.

The other method is to remove the wheel arch liner and get access from there. Do the job properly though as if you try removing it only partially, you might bend and deform it!

I think remove of the headlight requires removal of the front bumper so it might be a job too far!

If you are still not too confident, get either Halfords or (Better still) Your Skoda dealer to do it for you. I guess they will charge a few quid but they will be used to doing it.

Cheers all

flapperJack - I've I clipped the fuel filter and lifted it clear from the housing but I can't see how the housing can be removed as its welded to the inner wing and I can't see any fixings anywhere?

There are 2 or 3 torx bolts if I remember correctly they are either t30 or t45 torx. You have unclipped and lifted the filter. But you need to unbolt the filter holder bracket. I have done loads and this is the only way unless you have teeny tiny hands and buckets of patience.

It's one of the WORST minor maintenance jobs I've ever tried to do. I was changing the brake discs and pads so removed the wheelarch liner to enable me to see what I was doing, even so it was difficult to pull out the bulb after removing the wiring. Why do they make it like that? Don't think the average Halfords would have much success........

Remove fuel filter holder (three bolts), you have to move cooling water header tank to get socket on one of the bolts.

Leave all hoses / pipes connected.

Would be unfair to say then that access on the 1.2TSi is a piece of cake? :D

Our old C'eed did require the header tank and battery shifting to access properly mind you.

Well, 2 hours later and 3 broken 1/4" hex head extensions later I removed the fuel filter Torx bolts and replaced the sidelight bulbs!

Why should something that should be so easy be made so difficult?

Ah well, it's done now - thank you all for the advice and comments. Here is hoping that the bulbs last a long time now!!

  • 10 months later...

I did it using the wheel arch liner removal method.  However I decided to cut  a hole in it large enough to get my hand through , opposite the sidelight bulb for future access . Just cut a larger piece of matching plastic to cover hole and fix with self tappers / clips.

Next time a 5 minute job and fingers intact !
