Not to start an argument, but.... Regarding brakes

Recommended Posts

I'm currently sorting out my brakes, the rears are FUBAR, so I thought stuff it, I'll upgrade them and have done with it. Got myself read up on it, going down the 256 Rears and then 312 fronts. It's more for looks, and I don't want bigger wheels, 45 profile tyres burst your back on the roads around here as it is.

However I am getting conflicting reports on whether I need the whole front calipers, carriers, discs and pads, or just the carriers discs and pads and reuse my existing calipers. I am fine, I am going down the get everything route, so I am covered either way, but others looking at the same upgrade might only go for carriers when what they need is the whole kit. My intention was to keep a set of calipers if they are the same and refurb them and put them on the shelf.

I have looked at the part numbers for the calipers on both the mk1 octy VRs and mk1 Fabia VRs and the only difference is the first 3 digits(model designation?). Is there any definitive advice for doing the 312 mm front brake upgrade on the carrier situation? I assumed from the guide that I needed everything, but elsewhere says otherwise. It may well be that if you get the 312 upgrade from one model, say the TT mk1 2WD and octy mk1 VRs then you don't need carriers but from a mk4 golf for example then you need everything.

If it is the case the carriers only are required provided the calipers are from a certain model, then it might be worth updating the very excellent brake upgrade guide with that info for future enthusiasts[emoji5] .

Cheers

Lennie

I believe that the standard calipers can indeed be bolted to new deeper carriers to effect the 312 conversion, so replacement carriers and discs are technically all that need changing although practically one would not use the old pads on new discs.

Lol no. I've just sorted front and rear full kits off an octy VRs mk1 for mine and will get new discs and pads. I always assumed the full kit was needed, but if someone has used their existing calipers with new carriers and had success then great. When I was shopping about I was told that I would only need the carriers, but didn't like to chance it. Besides most people sell them as either full kits or minus the carriers as they have reused them.

No, No, No.

288mm front calipers wont fit 312mm carriers.

For the front and back you need carriers and calipers. Back needs to have came from a FWD car.

Are you quite sure, they look like the same part to me.

1000% Sure, I've just dune the 312mm and 256mm rear upgrade. The 312mm setup use's a floating caliper design where the 288mm are normal slider pin design.

Xman750 used to sell 312 carriers only for you to install your Fabia calipers into I'm sure. Don't know if he made them or just refurbed used ones. I'm remembering something about ds3 calipers being on both octy and fabia vrs rather than fsiii calipers or something. Need to have a hunt around now.

They are the correct 312mm carriers on that ebay link. However you would have to be some kind of magician to make them fit 288mm calipers. Absolute dreamer with the price. I paid £85 for carriers calipers with 1000mile old discs and pads!

I see that this confusion is caused by the type of caliper used, there are thousands of 288 ATE calipers fitted to VAG group cars which can be changed to 312 with a simple carrier change however most (if not all) Fabias use the Lucas type 288 which cannot be upgraded.

I must admit I haven't looked at the front calipers on my 2.0 but suspect they're probably Lucas rather than ATE, it is however a moot point since I'd have to change to 16" wheels to accommodate the 312's and I don't want to do that.

I suppose one comment to make to clarify "which (288) type of callipers do I have?" - if you can see the vertical external damping spring then you have ATE (or Teves) front callipers.

ATE is the acronym for Alfred Teves Engineering, Lucas calipers are also known as Girling calipers for the sake of completeness and future searches.

Ta muchly gents. When mines arrive I will have a look at the fronts and see which ones are fitted. If they are Lucas ones I'll probably just punt them on when I get the fronts swapped.
