New FL Yeti , Observations and questions.....

The new Yeti was delivered last week, and after just a few hundred miles, the following observations:

 

1: Getting up to operating temperature is much faster than before,  the complex cooling system with several pumps seem to work well.

 

2. The power steering seems to be much lighter, losing the better feel from the previous version.

 

3. The handling is more  "crisp" as is the spring rate. This could be having gotten used to whatever wear was in the old one with 100,000 miles on it. It feels lighter.

 

4. The engine seems much smoother and quieter. ( 150 vs 170 HP in the old one).

 

5. Mileage  is clearly better by 10% - by the Maxidot.

 

6. Inside mirror is slightly better positioned. But it could have been much better raised an inch or so.

 

7. The New Amundsen is better than the old Columbus (2009).

 

8. Light bulb specifications are omitted from the operators manual, why????

 

9. Mileage at speed on the motorway is significantly better than before.

 

10. The LED DRL's are very elegant, compared to whatevre else is around.

Interesting observations and comments, thanks. I'm currently waiting for a 150 replacing my 140 so I'm looking forward to checking out any subtle differences. What I have noticed when I looked at the FL before placing an order was that the build standard had improved, incrementally but noticeable.

Shark a performance spent a long time developing the 2.0tdi 150 and 185bhp, everything is within safe operating tolerances so no issues. If you drop them an email I'm sure they can belay any concerns :)

Maybe collectively we could put together a table and ask the Mods to pin it?  A bit like the invaluable tyre and rim guide.   I've noticed that several of the bulb vendor sites have the occasional error for Yetis anyway.

I echo several of your comments.

I've changed from a 1.8Tsi elegance to a 1.4 Tsi L&K.

On the new car, the general build quality seems better & there are no creaks & rattles (now I've tweaked the aluminium panel behind the rear bumper so it no longer vibrates against it).

The engine seems much quieter, though there seems to be more transmission noise at certain revs/load.

Economy seems much improved, though that's to be expected with the smaller engine.

The steering was unpleasantly light until I adjusted the tyre pressures to the correct figures (Over 10 psi too high all round). Now feel is very similar to the old car.

I'm hoping that the engine will free up a bit as the low down torque is substantially down compared with the 1.8Tsi and only really starts pulling once the turbo cuts in.

 

I like the Amundsen, but is there actually too much on it that I'm never going to use? Time will tell.

I preferred the layout of the buttons on the old multi-function steering wheel, particularly the thumbwheels which are now set too far in. However the wheel itself hs a much nicer feel but, and it's a big but... I don't like all the chrome bits on the spokes which dazzle me with the reflected sun when the sun roof is open.

The gear lever is slightly shorter - which I like, but others may not.

All in all, I like the changes, some very subtle like the way the window switches stay live for 10 mins after you turn off the ignition (as long as you don't remove the key) and even then you can close all the windows once you've removed the ignition key & opened the door just by operating the driver's window switch for 10 secs or so.

 

I'm sure I'll find other things as I get used to the new car... I even like the stop start system!

 

The handbook is as poor as the original one though! Presumably written in Czechoslovakian, translated to English via German and Italian. You really would think that Skoda would have someone with a decent command of the local language to copyread & correct the darned thing before publishing it!

A couple of additions:

 

11. The new xenon dipped beam headlights with halogen added for main beam are a good improvement over the old xenon with a mechanical cut-off.

 

12. The fog lights, while in the right place for thick fog, simply stink. Very yellow light and not much of it.

 

13. Fuel mileage has increased by 10%. Particularly, the mileage on the motorway has improved, although, I fail to fully understand why? The shape and weight of the car has not changed significantly, so it must be the more efficient engine management. Adding the NOx catalyst would seem to allow higher combustion temperature and less EGR, improving the specific fuel consumption.

12. The fog lights, while in the right place for thick fog, simply stink. Very yellow light and not much of it.

They are very useful for low speed manoeuvring when dark but could do with a brighter/more powerful bulb as they are only 35w I believe, and not a size that it's easy to upgrade.

If you do choose to change/upgrade them make sure it's a warm day and leave the car facing the sun for a while as the trim is a bugger to remove when cold and stiff.

Which spec did you go for Ernie?

 

I am also waiting for a 150 DGS 4x4, this time a SEL, to replace my 140.

I am hoping for delivery mid July ??

I went for another L&K 150 DSG with a few options. Unfortunately the current build date is week 31 ordered 22April week 17. The original estimate was mid July but I've been told that they have been re configuring the track for MY17 build and I guess maybe the Seat Ateca? Are you still buying from Progess?

I went with Citygate in Watford, as I know the salesman very well. He always manages to throw in a couple of freebies.

I got mats and an MDI on the last one.

I ordered mine on 15th March and was given a planned date of delivery of 21st July.

I know from previous experience that this will more than likely change though.

 

The main delay last time was the transfer of my reg from the old car to the new, so I'm going to put it on retention a few weeks before this time.

Quartz grey this time around

If it's built in MY17, I'm hoping there a few bits added to standard spec. Smartlink might be a nice toy?

That's what I thought as all bulb websites show that so I bought 2 Osram Nightbreaker H7 to replace them but they are not.

No problem I'll use them to replace the high beam bulbs that should definitely be H7.

It's slightly more complicated for me, as both old and new cars are Motability, and they have to do their bit of paperwork too.

Yes, taking a cherished number off a car takes no more than a few minutes, directly with DVLA's website. Of course, you then need to change the plates on the car and inform your insurers.  The replacement V5C comes through in about a week or so.

 

Putting a cherished number onto a second-hand car is also pretty simple.  The latest DVLA advice is not to let the dealer/garage send off the V5C to the usual address, but to send it yourself along with your retention certificate to the Personalised Registrations address (the one on the retention certificate).  They handle both the change of ownership and the assignation of the cherished number in one go, and the new V5C comes through within 2 weeks, usually less.

I have just taken delivery of L&K 150 DSG and the order to delivery time was 11 weeks. The transfer of my cherished plate was done in 10 minutes by the dealer when I picked up the car so there was none of the old hassle of retention and new number for old car etc. Very pleased with the Yeti. In particular it doesn't sound like a diesel at all from inside the car.

The 150 must have better sound deadening than my 110 as you can clearly hear the diesel, particularly at higher revs (2000 plus) and I don't drive it hard. In fact of all the VWG 2.0 litre diesels I've had over the years it is the most intrusive.

 

As I've said before, I don't mind it though, as I think the way it drives and sounds suits a car like the Yeti well. In my previous A6 that would have been a different matter! That was approx. 180PS though and incredibly smooth and quiet - can't believe it's the same family of engines really.

These statements make no sense whatsoever.

 

5. So are you saying when you cover 100 miles the maxidot says you've only done 90 miles? Or does it say you have done 110 miles? And what are you using to record the mileage - GPS logging?

9. As above - why would mileage on the motorway be "better"? 100 miles on the motorway is the same as 100 miles on any other road - it's still 100 miles.
