Handbrake Light Flashing

Recommended Posts

Don't know if these symptoms are related but last week my handbrake light started flickering on and off when I was waiting at traffic lights etc. Now my car is very sluggish to start in a morning due to what appears low power in the battery.

I tried a voltmeter today and was getting 14.15 - 14.18 with the engine idling.

Before I jump in and buy a new battery I was wondering if anyone has come across this and could it be the handbrake light switch or a relay/fuse draining the battery. When the light was flickering I'm pretty sure I heard a ticking noise coming from the fuse box at the side of the dashboard.

Took the car a good run out yesterday which would have fully charged the battery. Checked voltage this morning after it had been standing and just got 12v and had to bump start it.

Either the battery is draining or it is duff. As it is 5 yrs old went out and bought a New Bosch one this morning. Car starts first time now but will have to see if it drains as the Handbrake light is still flickering on and off intermitantly but only appears to do it when the handbrake is applied.

Sound like failing battery, try measuring the resting voltage on the new battery the morning after as it should be 12.5v or above if it was fully charged the night before.

Mines starting fail too as it drops to 12.1v in the morning after and its 10 years old so I'm going to replace mine too.

Well the good news is the new battery appears ok and isn't draining so it was a duff battery.

The bad news is the handbrake light is still flickering on and off when the handbrake is applied. Has anyone come across this problem?

Not sure how I would test the handbrake switch or if there are any other components in the chain i.e. relays, fuses etc. that could be causing the problem.
