Poorly Dsg. Vrs!

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

I've had my used fabia Vrs seven months now and it's been a good car to own. Engine has never missed a beat. Not sure about the gearbox tho.

When the car's warm and been driven a while. In town stop start trafic etc. slowing to a stop and picking the speed up. The DSG gets a bit Mardy in 1st and 2nd gear. When pulling away at junctions, roundabouts etc. It feels like the front wheels are spinning or something's not engaging properly. It Judders a few seconds then it's OK. It's always been present since ownership but lived with it cos it's not usually bad or at all. Unlike today driving In Nottingham's rush hour trafic was doing it alot. Anyone else had this? or know what might need fixing or causing it? Could it be owt to with clutch packs. I'm scratching my head. Thanks for reading. Nick.

Its a 2010 (59350) on clock. Yes I had all that done in Jan when I took it for service. It did it before the recall but didn't concern me as intermittent. Thought it was something to do with recall an that might cure it but it hasn't.

There was no 'Recall',

there was a Service Campaign and that started in May 2014.

Best get in touch with Skoda UK, raise a case because the Service Campaign work was paid by them,

they do try to put it back on the Dealership that did the work, but they are chancers the work was done because of

Fundamental Design, Manufacturing & component choice issues including fluids and quality control.

The Software update gets done with the car battery disconnected, some places did not do that.

So maybe clutch packs, maybe MCU,

but Skoda need to deal with it even with a car out of warranty, a DSG and components like Clutch Packs are not consumables.

6 years and 60,000 miles should not be the lifetime of these gearboxes.

In New Zealand the 'Service Campaign' had a New Mechatronic Control Unit Fitted.

http://skoda.co.nz/news/dsg-service-campaign

The 'World Wide Recall' that excluded the EU /UK had the Warranty Extended on the DQ200 DSG'.

Sounds similar to the problem I sometimes have. Just haven't had the time to take the car in to be looked at. My car has been mapped though, and the technician I spoke to was quick to point the blame of any problems on that. I said surely gearboxes should last more than 60,000 miles and he replied "it's just like a manual gearbox really, in that the clutches go on them too.."

The dry clutch pack does share the same characteristics as a conventional clutch on a manual box. When its worn it slips, when its weak it can judder but a lot of these DSG faults on the 7 speed box can be down to something as simple as the magnets being fouled with swarf.

At #5.

Maybe read the 34F7 Service Campaign latest procedure as it was updated,

it does say use an external power source.

Sadly missed by some Master Techs doing the Service Campaign.

Pictures and posts taken from the DQ200 Service Campaign thread, of which there are several.

No mater how unlikely any issues are due to the Synthetic Oil other World Regions had the Warranty Extended on the DSG.

In New Zealand new MCU's fitted,

and there are Briskoda Members that have had new DSG's fitted and they were not actually having any serious issues.

4 hours to do 'a proper job' in NZ, but then Skoda were only paying for a few 100 there.

then the VW,Seat & Audi if there were any....

An external power source means a battery stabiliser which is to be used in conjunction with the battery, in situ.

Here's a extraction from the TPI

"Requirements for the reprogramming:

The closed-circuit voltage of the vehicle must be at least 12.5 V during the reprogramming. Connect the battery of the vehicle to an external power supply. For further information see the Maintenance manual“.

During the reprogramming switch off all unnecessary consumers (ventilation, seat heater, inside light.

Make sure that during the reprogramming of control units no electro-magnetic radiation source (mobile or cordless phone) is operated directly or around the vehicle.

After the reprogramming of the gearbox control unit the basic settings / calibration on the Mechatronics must be carried out. After the basic settings / basic calibration an adaptation drive is necessary."

Unfortunately some techs just cant be bothered with the hassle of connecting a charger at any point or bother to carry out the adaptive drive.

Hi all thanks for your input its much appriciated.

Reported issue where i had the said service work done. Car is booked to go in on 17/6. They giving me a free loan car.

Am I right in thinking that any work undertaken would be paid for by skoda then as DSG is supposed to be lifetime guarantee?

The DSG is not a lifetime warranty in the UK/EU, not even 100,000 miles.

But Skoda UK had to start a Service Campaign because that is what they agreed with DVSA (VOSA) & DfT rather than a Recall.

So now that they had a DEalership do the work it is guaranteed work,

so they need to check the safety of the DSG.

They might offer a 'Gesture' if Clutch Packs, it is up to you what you do.

A bit off topic but does anyone know what a flashing cel light means? When accelerating hard car splutters a couple of times then the yellow cel light flashes for a few seconds then it's OK again until I try and floor it again. This problem occurred couple of days ago. I have always used shell v power but on two occasions I used normal unleaded. No problems. Then I thought I'd try Tesco momentum which was OK. Anyway once that run out and I am back on v power and the trouble starts. Gave it the beans then all of a sudden I'm in limp mode. All tho not in limp mode now car still runs pants. Any help appreciated.

Thats a misfire, your plugs are probably dead, I'd get them changed ASAP.

Is it the 'EPC' light?

Do not give it beans, ie Supercharger & Turbo / boot it.

You want to get those spark plugs out and tell us which one is near burnt out.

No it's the emissions light that's flashes. Although when it went into limp mode the epc and emissions was a solid light. I did a stupid thing in that i gave it beans before engine had reached temp then realised after. Very naive I know but easy done on a sunny morning. Next day no limp mode but flashing CEL. Then today steady 15 mile drive to mates and it's all good again. Plugs last changed 10500 mile ago according to history then 21000 before that. I will check plugs are they easy to locate. Until then no kickdown for me just incase.

It is quite common a plug is on its way out and the mis-fires do not actually register when running Super Unleaded.

Then you put in 95 ron and you get the Exhaust Emission Control light or the EPC or both.

It happened i think to sharkrider with his CTHE on 95 ron and the worst i ever had was on a car i picked up that i put Sainsburys 97 ron

in and the Spark Plug was totally shot.

Plenty other examples over the years both with CAVE and CTHE's.

Cheers mate first thing Tuesday. Is it worth getting it a proper scan? I tryed with a vag obd 2 reader but wouldn't connect with engine only ABS and SMS.

A scan might or might not show a misfire on which ever cylinder, but often it does not because there were none logged as not enough misfires in a cycle.

If the one plug is near end of life and the gap is too big then that is that.

If you can get a scan then you are as well to and see what fault codes show if any,.

  • 3 weeks later...

Had diagnostic scan done this morning. And misfire found on cylinder 1. So Had cylinder 1 coil replaced as the seal inside had perished and broken. Thought this might have cured it. How wrong. Apparently the misfire has now moved to cylinder 3 and 4. And they talking about swopping this coil for that coil. Software updates and possibly the timing chain could be slipping and because it's vvt it's specialists job. Am I being mugged off or has anyone else had this problem. Thanks.

You need to get a Qualified Technician to look at your car.

4 spark plugs out and checked.

I hope you have not paid them for an ignition coil.    They can go, because failing spark plugs can have a Coil fail prematurely.

??

Who gave you the Guff about the Timing Chain without actually removing and checking all 4 spark plugs?

Please name this dealership once you have the issues resolved.   People need to know to avoid them.
