full left/right lock makes "uuuuuu" sound...

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

My car is 9-years old and has done 110k miles.

For the last few months, when I take sharp corners, or do turns, and steer the wheel more than one turn, I hear this sound: "uuuuu.... uuuuuuuuu!" It's like squeaking but on a deep, lower pitch.

The sound seems to come from the front-right wheel - though I'm not sure.

I had both outer side CV-boots changed as the right one was leaking grease and the other had a plastic collar.

This however didn't affect the sound anyway.

When changing the boots, I asked the guys at the service: "I hear this 'uuuuuu' sound" - they said "if you don't hear 'click, click, click!' then you're OK".

Still I'm a bit worried - what could it be, and how to investigate further?

Many thanks!

Power steering is completely electric, no belts, no pump, no fluid.

Our fabia 2012 developed a low pitched sticky / groaning sound when turning lock to lock at slow speed, i.e. when max turning effort was required. That was down to faulty inner tie rod ends (at the steering rack end), incorrect and/or lack of grease so no lubrication of the joint. Basically the joint not turning smoothly.

That was a (common) manufacturing fault, if yours makes a similar noise only while the steering wheel is being turned then it might be inner or outer steering joint seizing.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for all your thoughts, last week I went to Skoda for service and they also did a health check, and though I mentioned this they didn't report anything related.

Most of my youtube and google searches pointed to different noises, but from all I watched it's not a clunk, squeak, click or creak, metallic grind or ring, crunching or clicking, hum, screech, squeal or whine...

I guess I will just keep going until something gives.

I had something similar. I didn't find solution so far.

I'm going to change all links for Powerflex and SuperPro ball joint.

My theory is that tyre is touching wheel arch PVC...in my case where is brake vents. Possible cause is all rubber joints are gone and wheel has got too much play.

My sound happens only to left side (front right wheel) turns during hard cornering. Now,  I got metallic clicks...it looks like all is starting to fall apart or during last wheel alignment..some guys forgot to tighten some bolts on axle carrier.
