Monte 1.6CRTDi fuel economy

I've had the Monte for 2 months now (it's a 2011 with 28k on the clock) and despite it's lack of punch, with only 75bhp, I love it to bits.

However, in the 1200 miles i've covered in those 2 months, it's only achieving about 40mpg - and that's with mixed driving. I don't rev the nuts off it (pointless with 75bhp!), but I don't use a hyper economy driving style.

I'm not naive enough to think that it will achieve what the manufacturers claim, however 40mpg does seem pretty guff - my old 1.9TDi passat would easily do 45mpg and that was a heavy old barge which had covered 135k.

Any thoughts??

Welcome to the forum

Drive it more like you would a petrol,as in not changing up as early

Check tyre pressures etc

Both my older diesel vehicles bettered the 105tdi Monte I had for economy

It does seem a bit low, but it depends on your circumstances. If you only drive it 5 miles to work and 5 miles back its not bad.

 

If I drive 10 miles to work I just about scrape 50 mpg in my superb, but every so often when I go out for a curry with work I take the same route plus a few miles past work and my mpg can easily read into the 60's for the sake of that extra few miles.

I get anywhere from mid 40's to high 50's depending on the type of journey, long motorway trips I've had 60+

The 1.6CR is very different to the 1.9PD unit. I have the 105bhp and know the 90bhp is similar but not sure about the 75bhp other than a much smaller turbo is fitted.

 

Only above around 1700prm is the turbo giving full boost and hence the most efficient combustion so you need to hold in a gear until after changing up the engine will still be running above 1600rpm. This is contrary to the gear change indication, just ignore it! Similarly round town after the 1.9PD it will seem strange keeping to second and third gears. Way back on this forum in 2011 or 2012 someone doing a regular cross-country journey found they got better mpg never using 5th gear.

 

Overall for me the 1.6CR is a disappointment as mpg is no better than the A4 estate I had before. Any increase in engine efficiency seems to have been offset by the CAT/DPF system obstructing the exhaust.
