Up GTI .... will there be a Citigo version ever?

no chance, £15k is a lot of money for an Up!. Could be tempted by a second hand one in a few years though

Agreed £15K is a lot of dosh. But the up is already overpriced, even now a top spec Up with a few extras chucked in is knocking on the door of £14K anyway (Not sure how many they sell though) There will always be folk with enough money.

Skoda are not offering any warm or hot hatches or even giving hints on any,

and if you look at the price of a Fabia with all of 110ps they are not very good VFM.

£15,000 might be a wish and a dream for the buying price,

they will likely get to near the price of a VW Polo GTI which VW seem to be selling as a loss leader.

My Polo was only 17K - so 15K for an Up! is silly money, unless there are similar discounts.

£15K is proper scary money for such a small car, but it's all finger in the air at the moment anyway. But manufacturers have always been good at creating "niche" vehicles and milking every last penny out of the punter. There are always going to be folk who want something they think is that bit different even if it cost way over the odds. Some folk buy them for no other reason than they are expensive and it makes them exclusive/collectable in their eyes.

I think it has the making of a competent little car, pricewise I wouldn't like to guess at the price point. Whatever it is, it will be beyond me until they are a few years old anyway. I'm not sure I'd be first in the queue to buy anything that VAG made anymore. Their track record on new tech engines has been pish for over a decade.

Actually, £15k is probably relatively cheap for a hot hatch.

The original Golf GTI in 1983 was supposed to be about £8k new, and adjusting up due to inflation, means it was about £20k in today's money, so £15k is pretty close to what the original GTI was worth new, adjusting for inflation.

My order for the GTi is waiting once there is some more details on the launch date.......... there has been so much hearsay for what feels a decade on the 1.0T engine in the UP!

The price these days is misleading as most people will be purchasing on PCP monthly payment. This will be assisted by how good small VW GTi residual values actually are in the market place.

Suggest people looking what 15year old (with 120,000miles) Lupo GTi value is now is around £3k+, It would also appear the prime used cars are £8k............... in its day it was a c£12k GTi new.

For me it would be VW Up! GTi 5door, with sunroof and the 7 speed DSG gearbox

There are also rumours REVO can get the 1.0T engine to c150bhp.................... if the 1.0T ever gets into the citigo i can see it only in 90bhp form most probably one the SE-L

It is great that people can get a 2016 VW Polo GTI 1.8 TSI for around £16,000

But 6 years ago you could not get a 2010 VW Polo 1.4 TSI for that you were a couple of grand more.

A 2010 Skoda Fabia vRS was around £15,000-£16,000 and people paid more than that.

Small Hot Hatches with 2 pedals are few and far between.or just Warm Hatches for that matter.

If Ford did Fiesta ST with an autobox that would suit some that do not want or can not have a manual box.

It is a pity really that Skoda do not do small cars with performance since they speak often of Motorsport Heritage and successes and then

just Build & Sponsor Rally cars with AWD while the nearest they get to selling small and interesting cars are sticking decals on and using the name 'Monte Carlo'.

Sadly there is no handling developments or even a sniff of performance hinted at coming from Skoda in the rest of this decade with small cars.

I have to admit I reckon if people could get a Citigo vRS for about £14k I think it'd get Skoda to sell quite a few more cars

I do agree, it would be a good thing to do after scrapping the Fabia VRs to come out with a new model of VRs would be great, would ruin my plans tho, I'm shoving a VRs badge on mine in the coming weeks, hoping to get the 0 - 60 down to 9 seconds soon

Why not throw a Turbo on it and maybe get it to a 0-62 worth boasting about,

or just as many do a Turbo or Supercharged badge on the rear and never open the bonnet or actually boot it when in the company of cars with some performance.

Yes that's a future plan, to have a supercharger, not a turbo charger as I think for a turbo there would be more work involved, also is there a problem with sticking a VRs badge on my car? If I did manage to get the 0 - 60 to 9 seconds then that's around 5 seconds faster than stock, I would say if I was pretending my car was something it's not (which imo I'm not, it's not like I've bought a bog standard 1.2 Fabia and stuck a VRs badge on it and called it a VRs, I've made my car quicker over standard and think worthy of having some kind of badge to show for it ) I have actually done some work to the engine which is different to what others have done, I've seen countless posts about people sticking a pod filter direct to the throttle body which makes the car loud and unlikely to gain any power from it, where as I've changed my way the air gets to the engine 3 times now before I was satisfied and even now I think it still possibly needs changing

looks like my prediction is correct :)

Volkswagen Up Beats 1.0 TSI

Location Italy; On sale July; Price £13,000 (est); Engine 3 cyls, 999cc, turbo, petrol; Power 89bhp; Torque 118Ib ft at 1500-3500rpm; Gearbox 5-spd manual; Kerb weight na; Top speed 115mph; 0-62mph9.9sec; Economy 64.2mpg (combined); CO2/tax band 101g/km, 17%

If the 1.0T can be got with the ASG (or dsg) then it would make a fine car IMHO..... the oomph is all thats missing from our 1.0NA Citigo

There are a couple of reviews on YouTube now from various sources. A little dull and quite long but plenty of detail. That engine has already appeared in 105ps form, wouldn't be surprised if a GT/GTi version popped up before long. Even at 90ps they are quick enough for what they are 0-60 is never the be all and end all of how a car drives.

Autocar expect the GTi to be 113bhp (115ps) in the UP!....... i do have doubts that Skoda will not get much more than the 89bhp (90ps), actually it wouldn't surprise me that SEAT get the GTi in FR version to support the dwindling sales of the Mii

Worth considering the other talent which is already in the market place (or about too):

Renault Twingo GT 0.9 109bhp

Smart Forfour Brabus 0.9 109bhp

Ford Fiesta 1.0 138bhp

Vauxhall Corsa 1.0 113bhp

VW do not usually 'Big Up' 0-100kms when they are promoting Greeness & Economy and a bit more power,

they play it down.

Many manufacturers play down the performance of City Cars and Commuters which in the real world are quicker than Brochure Speeds.

What they have often done will is better figures for MPG / Power etc with a VW or Audi over a Lighter Seat or Skoda with the same engine /drivetrain because that is how they always have until they got caught out with 'Co2 Irregularities; earlier this year and now they maybe need to be a bit more realistic with 'Official Figures'.

89bhp is more than enough in a car of it's size. Compared to my first mini, 0-62mph, 9.9sec, 64.2mpg; 118Ib ft and a top speed 115mph all in one car is witchcraft.  Plus syncro on all 5 gears!!!!

My first little Austin Mini 850 kicked out a bone crunching 34 bhp with an eye watering torque figure of 44 lb·ft. Down hill with wind behind you it would hit 75mph. And yet I did 1000's of miles in it and it was simple enough to fix myself. It's good to see the Up now has a version that has more usable power, GTi version with a bit more still would be good to see. I never get hung up on 0-60 times it's a pretty useless measure of a cars performance in the real world. In gear 30-50, 50-70 would be far more honest.

My previous Polo 1.9Tdi Sport was almost a second slower to 60 than my current 1.2 Tsi, but in real world overtaking was quicker in almost every situation (even though it did sound like a tractor on tickover)

I almost agree with DampDog. I reckon the Citygupmii could cope with up to 100 bhp, but the torque's fine at around 118. Get the top speed to 120, and 0-60 around 8.5. The suspension setup could cope now with the official proposed power increase.

My OH has a Move Up with the 75 horse engine and that soon runs out of puff. Needs more power.

My second car was a 1967 Mini 850! Fitted a Stage One Oselli head, polished manifold, and bigger SU. Used to frighten a couple of Coopers that were local. I could change a UJ in 20 minutes solo start to finish.

I'm like everyone else I don't think I've ever driven a car and thought that needs a bit less power. But the worlds full of eco-mentalists and accountants, as nice as it would be to have a 150bhp UpMiGo hit the streets it's never going to happen. They will slot it into place so it fits beneath the Polo Gti, they can't make it too good even if it's mechanically up to the task.

Even at 90-105 levels of power it would still be a match for the original Golf Gti. I'm sure it will get some subtle suspension and brakes tweaks to make it a decent enough drive. I'd put money on the aftermarket tuning companies getting another 10-15% (around 120bhp) out of it without major issues, time will tell. It does have the making of a cracking little car.

I was a mini nut back in the day....

My first car was a 1965 Austin mini 850. Complete with sliding windows, pudding stirrer gear-stick and pull-cord door openers. Paid £65 for it and spent a summer rebuilding it and getting it roadworthy, and polished just about every bit on it that could be polished, even the brass radiator header.  Ran that for around 18 months then bought one with a Howley Racing 1340 road-race engine, with Cooper-S brakes, twin petrol tanks, Ho-Lo's, and Spax set-up. Twin 1.75 SU's. It was mental for it's time. No idea how fast it would go flat out but the speedo gave up at 95 and it would sit there all day (cough where the speed limit allows) Never put a scratch on it. Sold it to a lad who wrote it off within a fortnight, I could have throttled him.
