Low powers driving me crazy!

Recommended Posts

In the past month if spent lots, a new gearbox "jnc" with a new clutch and flywheel. Then surprise suprise   my turbo split in two parts and blew from the aluminium side so I then got a decat and  upgraded to.a pd160 hybrid turbo  "180".. car still ran the same black smoke and lacking in the torque and and not the power side.. I then bought a brand new bosh maf and map sensor, Problem still the same.. I then decided this week to get a custom fmic built what took around 3 days.. guess what problems still there with all hard pipe work fitted with about 4 silicone joints fitted... it's driving me mad..

Also used 1.5 litres of diesel purge today just incase lol..

anyway things I have noticed today.. vaccum from the tandem pump is good.it's showing around 28inhg with the engine on idle.. fault I have found today lies with the vaccum system im pretty sure that the vacuum reservoir should hold vacuum over night? Well I'm switching my engine of and leaving it for about 5 mins and it's empty .. could this cause black smoke caused by a vacuum problem?

The cars not been mapped yet. And I'm awaiting for my laptop to return from the repair shop as the ribbon went on the monitor. I'm currently using torque pro atm with no faults, I do hold a full version of vcds.

Can I just clarify a few things:

Are you saying it's had low power since turbo went or before?

Is the car running stock map or has it been remapped for the old turbo just not again yet?

I would also wait for your computer to come back get vcds out and look at your idle stabilisation this will tell you if injectors are faulty if one or two are high or low, if all 4 are high or low then it could be cam in the extreme case, but unlikely.

Also check block 3 I think it is for the torsion value and report back.

Thanks for the reply.. since owning the car it's always had low power even before the turbo change. I figured out it had the 110bhp intercooler and map sensor fitted with the big probe about 5 months ago. So I had to bodge the intercooler insert with A rubber innertube as boost was blowing right out with the new small probe sensor fittee .. anyway so problem was solved then by replacing to the correct map senaor, then a few days later poof all power gone.. and it's been like this for about 4 months..

I finally have my lappy back so installing vcds atm getting ready for tomorrow morning..

I have noticed the turbo doesn't seem to be opening up correctly as it's really more of deep sound rather than the nice turbo whistle i hear from the exhaust.

tomorrow's job removing all pvc and vacuum pipes because that deep turbo sounds like the vanes are not fully opening, so could be either vacuum solenoid or pipes I'm thinking.

Yeah I'm on a standard map with a hybrid, fmic, stright though exhaust and an egr delete. I think it's pointless untill I get some power back or I'll throwing even more money away. Anyway I'll check everything tomorrow on vcds see how things look.

Still no joy :( I have checked with vcds and nothing. If I use a 2.5 bar map sensor it pulls better. I have splashed out another 50 quid for another 3 barmap map sensor and it pulls terrible with loads of black smoke. I have no boost leaks as I have checked with vcds with measuring block 11 while I squirt some fairy liquid all over the joints. Why would.it.run better with a 2.5 map senaor ??

anyway the guy who made my intercooler has extended my map sensor wires so I tested pin 1 and 3 wich read 5volts with the.ignition on. Does anyone know when the engine is running if I should be getting 1.7 volts as that's what it shows in autodata for pins 1 and 3 as 2 and 4 are the ait sensor..

many thanks

When you swapped between the 2.5bar and 3bar map sensor did you get the ecu adhusted? When changing map sensors the ecu needs tweaking so it realises it can measure the extra pressure otherwise it will get confused at the readings

I share your power issues (or lack of)..it certainly feels slow these days. I'm going to try a decat....

try with the downpipe of first, unbolt the 3 x 12 or 13mm bolts and let it hang and take it for a blast :D

the ecu has been un touched, the car is standard i believe. when i changed to my 3 bar map sensor last month it was pulling like a train then it just suddenly lost power one day and its been like that ever since.

Just to be clear, a standard VRS has a 3.0 bar MAP sensor fitted, this allows for up to ~2.0 bar boost plus 1.0 bar of atmospheric pressure = 3 bar, a 2.5 bar MAP sensor doesn't have enough headroom even on a standard car. If you refitted the standard 3 bar sensor and it smoked then that sensor is faulty.

thanks for the reply, the sensor was bought on sunday from euro car parts, its a genuine bosh sensor. i have about 4 map sensors in total sat in my glove box, 1 is faulty and the other 3 are working fine, well working the same as my new one is.. im thinking of removing the fmic  and and checking all the welds cause somethings causing the black smoke and low power..

and i only get black smoke if i nail the throttle, i could be cruising at 30mph if i  press the throttle to the floor for a split second you see all  black smoke in the mirror. and thats in any gear or parked up in neutral .. do these have a throttle position sensor ?

The throttle pedal is a position sensor, everything is controlled by the ECU.

The amount I have spent on this car is unreal, money and many hours working in it.. I feel like throwing petrol all over it.. Anyway my water pump has a slight leak so I'm gonna change the pump and timing belt maybe next week. While that's off I mayaswell throw a new camshaft and lifters and injector loom in. When that's done everything has been changed.. it's gonna have one lucky New owner when it gets sold haha...Anyway I'll report back in a few week when iv sorted it.

Did he not answer his own question when he said running hybrid turbo and fmic on standard map? .My understanding is if hybrid turbo fitted remap required straight away, or am I missing something here

  • 2 weeks later...

well i finally got round to logging it tonight. after over 2 weeks of playing with vagsuite i decided to remap my car via mpps.. still the same problem so that rules any hybrid / fmic issues lol.

a few screenshots below, i think the problem is the n75 as the duty cycle doesn't look right
