Ran VCDS on auto across the entire car today and im left wondering if I should just bin the whole car and get something else lol. So the climate control is well naffed, the immobilizer has a problem (causing it not to start..) the ABS has a problem and there was one more for power steering that I rage deleted. lol.

I guess it is a 14 year old car and niggles will be well on their way, but it is a shame because it is a lovely car and has done me really well.

ABS module is only pointing out that there's a fault logged in the engine module I think, so ignore that one.

Recirc motor fault is standard, no action needed unless you pass a pig farm every day.

Immo fault may be sorted with ref to Tech1e's work here: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/281731-fabia-immobilizer-key-signal-too-low/

V68 might need replacing if you're often finding you can't get the air temperature you want, and the evaporator sensor if you want the AC to work.

Not sure why you can't talk to the engine module though, others will, I expect.

Other than the immob issue, it will be the temperature flap motor that will get to you most I found, with my last car, I had to stop at services for us to cool off one August/September, I did fix it quickly after that! (new flap motor had been in the boot for a year or two!)

Have you tried whacking the temperature to Hi > Lo > Hi > Lo a good few times as that might clean up the control pot enough for a few months of controllable air temperature?

I'd doubt if any of us who keep cars to get our money's worth out of them know exactly when to ditch them!  My last car which I sold at just over 13 years from buying new is still alive and passed its 16th birthday with a fresh MOT and no work needed. My wife's last car was traded in at almost 13 years from buying new with what I'd would have used about £300 to sort out myself (full brakes + other stuff including tyres) - that car seems to have passed its next MOT with no outstanding issues, I'll need to check again in a few months time!

+1

Have a long think about whether you should call it a day. I've been in a similar situation recently, though mine is a bit younger at 10 yrs old. Decided to keep it even though it's had (and continues to have) some niggling issues, which I'm slowly sorting out. At the end of the day, you know the history of the car and it'll still be cheaper than a monthly car payment.

The climate control isn't a massive biggy TBH, it only covers 2-3k a year between the good ladies work, school and home. Cracking the windows is ok for the 1 in 50 times the aircon goes hot. The problem is the intermittent starting, I have to know that it is going to be reliable starting (I get the grief when it isn't!!!!).

I'm going to replace the fob battery as that hasn't been done for years. I don't think I would be happy taking off the steering wheel to do the wiring bypass, so I will have to take a call on where to go next.

Yesterday was a BAD day, my laptop broke (I am a programmer - my laptop is my world!), the wife was on the drive cranking the fabia to an inch of its life and then my Insignia reports a wheel speed sensor fault whilst delivering everyone to school/work because the other car wouldn't play. ARGH.

Mine is twelve years old, it too, is getting to that stage, I've replaced almost all the suspension apart from the springs, front shocks, and the top strut mounts, last year saw all the calipers, discs and pads being done. The anti roll bar bushes are starting to knock occasionally again, and while doing the last service I noticed that all the intercooler hose connections are starting to weep slightly  meaning that the engine needs Jizered and cleaned more often than it's usual bi-annual effort.

If I'm honest I could live with and sort all that as she still pulls like a train but, and it's a big but sadly, the tin worm is starting to get beyond the surface variety. I've treated and painted both sills and the n/s/frt wing section at the sill. The problem area afaic is at the rear quarter where it meets the bumper. The paint is starting to bubble and it will be a major job to cut that all out and then repair and repaint, with it being Silver I reckon that the rear quarter would need to be painted to minimise the difference in the paint shading.

Then there is the Fkn (sorry about swearing) drivers seat upholstery. That stupid silver/white material that was used has been cleaned so many times it's worn through and I now have a hole the size of a 50p peice. The padding is ok, as is the under cover but it just annoys me, and that's only the upright. The seat base bolster is beginning to crumble and I can feel the support bar underneath if I drive any distance.

It's a shame as I still love the car and, it still does it's job of providing cheapish, entertaining transport. It starts and runs no problem (touch wood now that I've tempted fate by praising it, lol.), and there's not a hell of a lot out there that compares favourably so, the problem is, what next? 'Cos I'll never get my money back if I spend on it, and swmbo is moaning about what I do spend and the amount of time I spend on it as it is. Decisions, decisions.......

Swmbo's running a Corsa CDTi 1.7 SRi which she's just got and I've been quite impressed by it as it's handling and drive characteristics, they are similar to my Fabia vRS but, it's a Corsa, they're as common as muck! I don't want to be confused with a wee boy racer. As I said before decisions, decisions....

My son has a Suzuki Swift Sport mk2 model and I quite like it too but I'd need to get the mk3 (six speed box, comfier seats and a better sound system) but, then you have to get used to the lack of fuel economy compared to the Fabia. The best managable in the Swift is around 40 mpg and that's driving sensibly I'd need to be driving like a loon to get that low in the vRS.

Oi Skoda!!! why'd you stop making Fabia vRS TDi's?????
