Release keys for Bolero head unit

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm thinking about replacing the Bolero head unit on my Octavia (2014) with a Chinese aftermarket android system.

I want to make sure i have the required tools for replacing it, after some online research - i figured there is some tool called release key, which needs to be used to disassemble the head unit.

there is some youtube  video (https://youtu.be/_93-Sh-Q6I4?t=20) where the presenter is using such release keys (two different types of release keys), but on the website of the video publisher - they mention a third and forth types of release key suitable for Octavia (http://www.connects2.com/products/accessories/release-keys/vehicle/Skoda)

Does anyone knows which type should be used?

Thanks

You cant replace the head unit on the MK3 Octavia I'm afraid. Its all a part of the cars' computer etc, The screen is just a screen and buttons, not a head unit. The unit so to speak is in the glove box. But it cannot be changed as it controls the cars functions etc.

Edit:

That video may prove me wrong though, which I've never seen something like that before...

(youtube blocked at work!)

I wonder if it still displays all the car related stuff somehow like tyre pressure monitoring, air con control, driving mode etc.

For the display unit you need 4 keys (2 top and 2 bottom). You may try doing that with 2 only but that means doing one side first, securing it against popping back and doing opposite end. The glove-box unit requires only 2.

In each case you put it with cut side to the center to bring snaps "away" from installation frame. I suggest using some sand paper to blunt the key edges first; especially if your keys are cheap ones. That may help to prevent marks on removed components.

Actually - your replies took me back to the video on youtube (i was originally only interested on how they removed the screen), and indeed the screen is just a screen, but the company which posted the video (which isn't the system i thinking about buying) provides some extension cable, and they extend the cable form the glove box to the where the screen is.

i think i'll get the release keys first to see what's going on inside, and later make sure with the seller that there product can be installed on the MK3.

BTW - regarding the car related info, there is some ODBII device which sends data to the system over bluetooth and another canbus device (both optional components), i'm not sure what data each of them can get.

Thanks.

There is plenty of Bluetooth converters (ELM327 or similar) and software using it (e.g. Torque).

Google it to see the feature listing.

if anyone interested, the original stereo can be easily replaced with the mentioned release keys (not sure which type to use - i bough a complete set for many vehicles for 10$) - you simple need to pull out the unit in the glove box (using the same release keys), few screws to disassemble the the glove box itself, release keys to remove the main screen (four keys - as mentioned above), and pull the cable cords from the glove box to the main unit (the length of the cable is enough to get to the main screen area).

it easily connects to the original car connector, and has canbus connectivity (it shows few driving data details, can show which door is opened, be controlled from the built in steering wheel controls, dim the screen a bit if lights are on, and even display media info in the maxi dot display).
