MK2 Skoda Octavia VRS - <£5k

Hi all!

So my car search has led me here for some advice, I did have my heart set on a Golf GTI but for similar money I can get a better specced VRS!

So I've decided I'd like the TFSI VRS - I've seen this car and test driven it: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201605264337511

He's offering a very good part exchange price on my current car so am very tempted by it in terms of value.

It drove well - things I noticed were:

- With the cooling fans on there was a noise/whine from near the glovebox, was told this was normal...

- The Traction Control light was on - the dealer said that it was "most likely" a sensor that would need to be fixed, and they'd do it before selling it. Could this be a bigger issue than something simple like that?

- Rear tinted window seems to be film and is beginning to bubble/peel - how much would it set me back to get that off and a new tint applied?

- Front Skoda badge looks damaged/corroded

- Interior wise it was okay - what do you think of the stock speaker setup in the car? Does it perform well? I'm not sure what kind of stereo (has sat nav) this one has and I don't know whether it was an uprated speaker system that the ad claims

- The white part of the seats looked a bit filthy - do they clean up well?

Thanks all! :)

Zoomed in - it's a Columbus system - is it easy to put music on there? I see there is an SD slot for that!

I'm going to take it for another test drive and have a look at it tomorrow morning!

I'll find out what part it is, but apparently they ordered a part and it will be fixed! It will fail an MOT if the light is on correct?

Glad the stereo is a good one, that should be fine with me - I'd ideally like to be able to stream music over bluetooth with my phone - is that possible?

Any idea about the noise when the blower is on? Read online that maybe it's leaves or something? Any other common faults? If it was A/C related would that noise come from the engine bay? :)

It's against the law to sell an unroadworthy vehicle, and if it's an mot failure then it's unroadworhty, and it must be fixed.

The stereo doesn't have any Bluetooth built in. You might have a seperate Bluetooth module under the drivers seat, but unlikely to be compatible with Bluetooth music streaming at the age of the car. However, you'll have 32gb sd card size, and also 18gb of hard drive space on the head unit, and then there's a dvd drive which is mp3 compatible. Will you really need Bluetooth streaming?

Thanks for the responses, not sure how to multiquote on mobile!

So the wiper motor, I'll try it out tomorrow - hopefully it can be fixed for the sale price.

Is the blower motor a cheap fix? I'll see what its like tomorrow when the car is idling, I didn't test it out properly when the car was stationary.

Thanks for the information on the stereo, that will be enough. Only reason I'd be interested in the Bluetooth streaming is to listen to Spotify.

Having finally looked at the Autotrader advert and seen that it's a 2006 model, you need to ensure that the noise from the blower is not the start of the aircon system breaking down, it will work but then gets noisier until it finally breaks. It is a very common problem on MKII Octys along with ABS sensor problems, both of which happened to my 2007 VRS Octavia. If you suspect it is the aircon then before you hand over any cash, ensure the TCS dashboard warning light is extinguished and that you negotiate a warranty specifically covering the £500-600 minimum cost of repairing the air con.

Cheers for having a look! I put a deposit down today, picking it up on Wednesday. Its getting a full service, cambelt (water pump and tensioner), the tcs light sorted, a blemish/bubbling paint on the front bumper done, tints removed (they were beginning to bubble), new aerial and the rear wiper arm to be fixed.

I didn't hear the noise this time, I checked before and after the test drive. Strange. Raised the point with the dealer - getting it regassed and will test again when I pick it up!

Excited!
