Cambelt change guide

Hi all.

Recently brought an 06 octavia vrs tfsi and cambelt is about due. Is there a guide on how to change this as I wouldn't mind giving it a go at home. Used to have a mk1 vrs which I loved and am now really enjoying the mk2. Remap coming soon after cambelt is done.

Also it worth doing the oil pickup pipe as a precaution as my brother in laws 1.8t has blocked and trashed his engine.

TFSI doesn't have the oil pick up issues that the 1.8 did (different engine) as far as I know.

Cambelt in itself is fairly easy, getting to it isn't. To get the cover and mounting out of the way you normally have to remove the gearbox mount and shift the whole engine across to get it out. Without the proper engine brace to support the engine gearbox that's gonna be quite tough.

Ive got mine to do this year,ive got all the autodata info & that says to disconnect the driveshafts & the exhaust front pipe as well as the gearbox mount etc,is all this required? i dont have the engine brace shown in the autodata info but do have lots of trolley jacks so was going to put one under the engine & one under the gearbox.

I'm considering doing my cambelt this year too due to labour costs on this job although my son is a mechanic and will help me so he says!! I also looked at the autodata info for this job and i have no idea why the exhaust and driveshafts would need to be removed to do it. The engine mount does need to be removed but i plan on supporting the engine on a jack underneath.

Assuming you are in the UK...

 

Cars registered before September 2010 - 4 years.

 

Cars registered after September 2010 - 5 years.

 

Mileage varies by model, engine, year etc. so the only way to accurately check is by contacting Skoda UK with your VIN...

Thanks for the replies. May get the garage to do belt.

Is there anything else I should get checked. The car has done 150k but seems OK. Has the normal tfsi noises but nothing unusual.

Just had the cambelt replaced on our 06 VRS TFSi by our local trusted indy, so cant help on method. I did however get the waterpump replaced, new coolant and a new auxillary belt. Seemed worth extra for peace of mind.
