Should I worry about the coolant?

Hi there,

I've had a used 2012 1.0 Citigo since last year, been very happy with it so far. But after a bout of cold weather earlier this year, the coolant warning light came on and it was very low. Since we had the baby in the car, I took the risk of driving home, bought some coolant and topped it up. No further problems, but I think there must be a leak because since then I've had to top it up twice (never because the light came on though -- after visual inspection).

It's not due for another service until end sept or about another 3,000 miles according to the schedule. But I'm starting to think maybe I should take it in to be looked at -- any opinions?

(Also leaving it 10,000 miles between oil changes makes me a bit nervous! I started motoring in the US, where every 3,000 miles was more common.)

Thanks!

It shouldnt really loose coolant, unless there is a leak or worse.. its over heating.

the rubber pipes to the rad can easily crack and its not visible until the engine is hot and the pipes are under pressure from the water temp.

Or.. the clips from pipe to rad etc are worn/loose try checking the screws with a screwdriver, or inspect the pipes when the engine is hot.

the UK temps can easily crack them.

I had an old metro that once hot, you could just spot a small steamy spray... one new pipe, and sorted.

as for oil - 10,000 is totally fine, the oils last ages, but they will burn oil more as its used more as a lube on modern cars, so just check levels.

Welcome to the forum.

Had you visually checked the Coolant level when you bought it and before a warning light?

it might have been low.

Now maybe best not fill to MAX, because above MIN is fine, many find their own level.

Mark where the level actually is between MAX & MIN with a marker, if it is dropping when checked cold without opening the cap you have a leak.

In the UK 40 plus years ago oil changes were on Diesels at 3,000 miles and 6,000 on petrols,

Mineral & Mutigrade oils.

the US of A liked Oil Changes because it paid the wages.

9,400 (10.000) mile oil and filter changes are fine, climate and conditions of use dependent.

UK commuting & driving surely is not an extreme condition.
