Chipped Windscreen Aggghhhh - what would you do?

So - dilemma - month old Yeti L&K (so heated screen) 1000 miles and a dirty great stone flies up an chips the screen quite badly (but it hasn't cracked yet) right slap bang in the drivers eye line. I've managed to polish it out a bit with glass cutter but your eyes are totally drawn to it as you drive.

Admiral insurance charges extra (on top of £70 excess) if you insist on an OEM screen and additional Skoda Ensurance cover doesn't include screens. They also insist you use Autoglass.

I'd replace it..

I had 2 replacement windscreens ,one heated on L&K,no problems,

Both developed cracks from stone chips which spread quite quickly.

I'm afraid Yeti screens seem to attract stones...

I haven't had a significant stone chip for years.

All trucks have to have their load covered and our roads haven't broken up much or are repaired fairly quickly.

Then again I don't hit them at high speed anyway.

fairly certain the last screen I had on my old fabia GL2 done at autoglass was a skoda screen, it certainly had the little black arial down it and I am fairly certain it had the skoda marking on it as well, unfortunately I can't check as I no longer have the car

You are not permitted a chip (repaired?) bigger than 3mm in the drivers field of vision.

I have had an unmarked windscreen crack suddenly from the bottom to the top, very

distracting! and another where a stone the size of a mans hand  tiddly winked toward

me and struck the screen, edge on, leaving a pattern of chips right across its width,

this too went pop in a star pattern.

Get it changed.

How contradictory is that, fit anything else which is non OEM you have to declare it and they hike the premium up, now there saying you can't have a OEM screen unless you pay more money.

As well as our crappy roads the "fix" often used is the dreaded bitumen and chippings. :(

I'm still avoiding roads that were done ages ago because loose chippings sit on the white lines and if someone overtakes or a lorry touches them in either direction then often it's whack.

Unfortunately FMB I've got to go with the collective and say get it replaced. I feel your pain.

It's because the pattern replacements used by Autoglass are 'OEM Spec'. That said, rarer screens are OEM (not economical for them to make a pattern version) - hopefully a heated Yeti screen is rare enough and an OEM one will turn up.

This particular chip happened on the M5. The car in front threw up one of the large gravel chippings that had escaped from the central reservation.

As its a heated screen would have thought Autoglass would have to use the VW / Skoda part, would be surprised if other manufacturers make heated Yeti windscreens. Can the chip not be repaired before it spreads.

The chip is in a place that can't be repaired, but as yet isn't a crack, hence the debate about leaving it.

Had my heated screen replaced a few weeks ago,  not by

auto glass because my insurer uses a different company.

the screen they fitted was made by

Pilkingtons  (British firm),  and I'm perfectly satisfied it will fully match the OEM spec.  Why are you worried about the replacement not being OEM?

Because being a new car with a heated screen I won't know if it works properly until winter. If I have problems, Skoda clearly won't be interested. I have also had problems with the lights and wiper sensors in the past with pattern screens. Autoglass techs are fine at fitting the screen, but don't seem to have the kit or ability to test and calibrate the screen properly once fitted. Had problems with a previous car in this respect so am very wary.

Well - Autoglass are coming on The 18th to fit a new Pilkington screen (OEM manufacturer but without a Skoda logo). I explained the damage and they said they were happy to fit a new screen. As expected, Autoglass don't do a heated 'Shatterproof' pattern screen for Yetis.

Auto glass fitted a screen to my first Yeti, just before I changed to my second, and was fine. I was with VW/ Skoda insurance at the time and they covered it less my excess. It was done on my driveway and the guy was very good at protecting the car internals, cleaning off the old sealer, priming and sealer the new one in. No problems. Good luck with yours.

other manufacturers DO make heated screens .I used to work for a windscreen distribution company who supplied fitters with OEM or budget alternatives. most types of screens are available even for expensive vehicles.

I'd still insist on a good ie. well known brand replacement glass You are the customer, the fitters will do what you want.

Finally if you get a chip or crack replace the screen. A chip will only get worse and sooner or later that means a replacement so might as well do it now.

Unfortunately, Admiral won't do that unless you pay the difference if there is a budget screen available. Fortunately it appears that in my case there isn't a budget screen and this will be a Pilkington.

Or wait and get another one on the old screen........if only!

ie - get lucky

Some Models (various makes) such as our Yeti's, are more prone to this damage due to the "front end" design. What must be borne in mind is that ALL makes are now using MUCH thinner glass! - Less weight = less emissions! That's the way they have all gone, and why we see so many threads such as this. They just cannot take the same punishment as they did some years ago................Tony

have you tried the old trick of putting superglue in the chip to stop it spreading / cracking? if you are not or can't get it repaired

the superglue is thin enough to be pulled into the cracks by capillary action, make sure screen is well dry before doing it as water caused superglue to dry, so you don't want it setting before it has got as far as possible into the cracks

It's more about it being right in my eye line and me being 'picky' about having an imperfection right under my nose in an all but brand new car. As said, it's chipped, not cracked.

  • 2 weeks later...

Quick update - A new screen fitted yesterday by Autoglass, who supplied a Skoda OEM screen (because no pattern heated screen available) - hence the delay as they had to order it from Skoda. Had to come back today to fit the 'gel pad' for the rain sensor as the wrong one was brought yesterday. A neat professional job and a bit of rain today (it is a Cornish summer after all) has shown the sensor works properly. The £75 excess poorer, but well happ I've got it sorted. Happening so early in the life of my new car, and being in such an irritating place, it just had to be done.
